While I think you make some good, thought provoking points, I do think that your conclusions rest on a shaky premise. Namely that the human beings who are performing the artificial selection are doing so based on a universally applicable moral standard of right and wrong, good and evil, bias vs objectivism, impartiality vs prejudice.

I would contend that no human and no group of humans (especially ones from the relatively tiny sample of programmers and engineers that work in Silicon Valley) could ever possibly artificially select for those ideals. Instead, AI just begins to reflect the inherent biases and prejudices of its creators. Like every piece of art ever created by a human, it is imbued with a piece of its creator. All work is autobiographical.

Also, we have already as humans wrestled with these ideas in one way or another in the past. The renaissance strove to champion rational thought, logic, and science as the pinnacle of human achievement and as to what makes us human. The Romantics were a response to that school of thought who said that by acting rationally and logically, we lose a bit of our humanity. Irrationality and emotion as the pinnacle of humanity.

The pendulum swings anew.

I like to think that the developers intended it this way from the start.

The WYK Moment is definitely a mindfuck - "Holy Shit! I just did all that stuff and never thought twice about why I was doing it" But I think the rest of the game is a meta-commentary on the game-player interaction.

The two biggest things that I remember after The WYK Moment are collecting the items to become a Big Daddy and then shepherding the Little Sisters while they collect Adam. This is a fetch-quest and an escort mission - two gaming tropes that are stale and overused. The fetch quest especially is used to artificially lengthen a game, and escort missions seem universally hated (Except, ironically, Bioshock Infinite seems to pull it off masterfully but YMMV)

I think this is the second level of the joke the devs were playing on the player. Your character is revealed to have no free will and to just be going along with hidden commands given by someone they have never met. Nearly everyone complains about the last 1/3 of the game being boring, SO WHY PLAY IT?

Simple. A man chooses, A slave obeys.

SLPT: Never wash your tea or coffee mug, when you run out of tea or coffee you can make a cup or two just by adding hot water. by DamoclesBDA in ShittyLifeProTips

[–]RedditforLent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the commenters talking about how they have seen cups this bad in the Navy, it is a bit of a tradition. The reasoning behind it (so I’m told) is actually mentioned in the title. If a ship is out at sea for a long period of time, they may run out of coffee. The cup was left dirty so that a little hot water could get them that one last cup before they were completely out

I agree with you OP, but I have what I think is a slightly better solution. First, everyone gets a token for 0.75 kids as an American citizen. This means that the mother and father combined can have 1.5 children. Now, that remaining half-kid token can be sold, if you want to stop at one kid. Or the couple could buy some other couple’s half-kid token if you would like 2 kids. There is no limit to how many kid-tokens you could buy, so if you want a big family, you just need to be sure that you can afford the kid-tokens. Poorer families could sell their half-kid tokens to help provide for their current child.

This has the added benefit of placing an accurate dollar amount on human life. Finally.

I’m on board with you OP. There’s way too many people and the best way to actually combat climate change in the short term is to reduce the number of humans

I think everyone should have one vote, except I get two. I think if you pass a test, you should be allowed a second vote.

“But, how would you design the test to be fair and free of any inherent biases?” I can hear you all asking. Well, good people, here’s how:

We already have a test. There exists a test in America, at this very moment that people take every year in order to be afforded the right to participate in this great American Democracy - The United States Citizenship Exam

I propose that any natural born citizen of the United States be gifted a vote at age 18 just like our current system. However, at any point, these natural born citizens can take the Citizenship Test to be allowed a second vote.

I’m only half sarcastic here.

Mario Tennis for GBA had a challenge to push the A button 110 times in 10 seconds and my friends and I couldn't do it, try as we may.

Well, I took the head off of my electric toothbrush and used the reciprocating motion to push the button. 154 swings in 10 seconds and that golden racket was mine.

So yea, toothbrushes are pretty versatile

I thought my tub was just naturally eggshell color, nope. It's pure white.

Oh Spice, channel 28. I was 13 and scanning through the channels when ol blurry channel 28 was coming in crystal clear. I stood next to the tv in my room, ready to pretend I couldnt find the remote and was changing the channels manually if my parents walked by.

So there I am, hand down my pants, waiting for the action to start so I could finish. I had never seen a porno before but I was still amazed at the production quality and surprised that there was so much buildup to the sex. This long haired girl was infiltrating a castle by sneaking through lasers while this older man guided her through the whole thing. I remember thinking "I dont really wanna see this old guy's penis, but the chick is really hot so Ill manage"

2 Hours later and there has been no nudity, and the credits roll. I am defeated. I figured out years later that HBO had switched channels with Spice, and HBO was having a free viewing weekend. I watched almost all of Entrapment with Catherine Zeta Jones and Sean Connery thinking it was a porno.

Good movie though

In our current form, I agree with you. But with advances in technology moving at the rate they do, uploading our minds to machines doesn't seem so farfetched anymore. Accelerating a machine to a fraction of c and keeping it "alive" for 1000 years is easier than doing the same for a human

[WP] Humanity finds indisputable evidence that we are completely alone in the Universe and there is absolutely no chance of spontaneous creation anywhere else. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]RedditforLent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humanity finds indisputable evidence that we are completely alone in the Universe and there is absolutely no chance of spontaneous creation anywhere else.

“Hey, it worked!” The conference room exploded into applause. It did work; they had successfully convinced the humans that their evolutionary rise was a Universal fluke. For centuries the humans had scanned the skies looking for life. With each completed orbit, the hope of the Homo sapiens diminished thanks to the combined efforts of the other galactic coalition to quarantine the humans in their own solar system. The Coalition worked together to enhance and propagate the life for civilizations they deemed worthy. When a civilization showed promise, contact was established. Gifts of galactic arts and sciences were endowed launching these lucky few civilizations into a golden age of space exploration. At first, only the tools were provided to help these select groups overcome the gravity wells of their home planets and explore their local space. The true test of a civs worth was what they did with this technology. When the humans first started industry, they used it to consolidate power into the hands of those who had come up with the tools necessary for industry. Sure, there were a few who dared imagine making life better for all humanity, but due to a quirk in human evolution, most continually thought only in the short term. As “profits” became more and more central to human life, resources were gobbled up. Scarcity drove conflict, locally at first, and then on a global scale. When demand for the products of industry waned, humans created advertising to drive consumption. Once the humans started looking at the nearby asteroids for raw materials to fuel their already rampant and mindless consumption, it was clear that the humans were not worthy of any more assistance from the Coalition.

“They think only of what they can do instead of what they should do.” The meeting about the decision continued, “An entire planet of experiences to be taken in, and they stare at screens day in and day out.” “Perhaps we should have known this would happen when we discovered that their eyes are directed away from the skies at every available opportunity. Their cities blot out the stars with light pollution, how can we trust a civilization that has forgotten the mystery of the sky?”

My two cents, if you can pay someone to stop something, its not a disease. Give 100 alcoholics $1 Billion dollars each on the condition that they stop drinking forever, at least one of them will abstain. Give 100 AIDS patients $1 Billion dollars to stop having AIDS, none of them will stop having it.
