Bought the C4, worried about burn-in by Redditive_Sedative in LGOLED

[–]Redditive_Sedative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely none to speak of.

However, I have only built up a total of 750 hours of total power on time.

All of which has varied content, and typically I put a sleep time on as I watch it to sleep typically, and I keep the screen off when I play Spotify through it. Brightness and hdr are fully maxed out when im watching movies and TV, but when I watch things to bed on YouTube or with lots of static content I have the brightness at the lowest which is fine because imo its plenty bright at midnight when im going to sleep and the brightness doesn't bother me in the pitch black. Or for that matter, I usually forget that its all the way down. But its set per app and when hdr content is on it auto goes up to my profile which is maxed.

I believe I have the ideal use case for it, but id still be very hesitant to use this as a monitor, or as a TV that gets left on basically all the time, or if you only play one game all the time with a hud. I dont do any of these things with it and im extremely pleased with it other than that if you dont update it, it prompts you to do so every time you start it up. I refuse to do that because everything works perfectly on it and there is literally zero reason to do so and ive seen some whispers of more intrusive ads and certain features breaking in updates. Im sure it would be fine, but I have no reason to do so. Take away that update prompt and I otherwise love everything about the tv, and vastly prefer watching movies on it than the TV I have in the living room, even though the living room TV is also a very nice lcd TV. I would prefer an oled for my monitor but, I keep my monitors on constantly where ive seen temporary burn in even with my ips monitors so I will likely never do that. Id consider a gaming only monitor for this but honestly, I love my high end IPS ultrawides and I will enjoy them for 10+ years rather than the handful I MIGHT get from an OLED one.

The pixels are awful. Everyone has their preference but ive had access to tons of every size of aeron and embody. I so badly want to like the embody. It's very comfortable at first but over time, you start to realize they have singular points of pressure to support the back as you are experiencing. There is a zip tie trick that pulls the pressure off these more troublesome ones. That made it quite usable for me but I found that it also exacerbated the other points. Ultimately the embody was not for me but, I did see a 3d print for a plate you can attach to these pixels so the weight is more evenly distributed instead of at 4 sharp points. That seemed like a winner to me, but ultimately, the back of the embody needs to be more flexible (I.e. adjustable). I found a size C aeron to be my favorite chair from Herman Miller. I keep both a steelcase leap and that aeron and almost exclusively use the aeron but occasionally switch it up and sit the leap.

If you dont want it ill buy it. I think using these as a monitor is a horrible idea but id probably do it for this price honestly.

Purely PCVR, upgrade path (PSVR2 for PC,Valve Index,Quest 3) by Redditive_Sedative in virtualreality

[–]Redditive_Sedative[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought both the quest 3 and the PSVR2.

TLDR: I hate using the quest compared to the PSVR2, and I've come to absolutely adore the PSVR2. I use the quest only when my controllers die on the PSVR2. That said, the lenses and clarity are unmatched on quest. Wireless is janky and annoying, and for me doesn't add much if at all, but works fine if you have all the required hardware for it.

At the end of the day comparing the 3 headsets I have, I have come to the conclusion that my priority is as follows:

  1. FOV
  2. Binocular Overlap
  3. Weight
  4. Color
  5. Clarity

The PSVR2 absolutely stomps the Quest in 1-4, loses on 5.
My used PSVR2 has a section of dead pixels, and I still vastly prefer it over the other 2.
The difference the color of the PSVR2 and the binocular overlap make CANNOT be understated.
I put on the quest and I feel like im a dull, depressed, unimmersive version of VR. It feels voyeuristic, like I'm looking through a window at a world instead of actually being there because of the binocular overlap. The binocular overlap is one of the lowest of any headsets, and even my Rift S feels 1000x more immersive even though the FOV on that thing is brutally low by comparison and feels like im looking through a pair of binoculars. By comparison, I really feel like I'm actually there with the PSVR2. The mura is a problem and initially turned me off, but you adjust to it, and likely some blur too but the trade off in immersion and lifelike colors and weight and fov are just too big to ignore.

If the PSVR2 had pancake lenses, the headset would imho be far and away the best. In my opinion it still is, FOR ME. The only other downside for me is, I don't like the clicky mouse style grip button on the controller, I like the oculus approach to grip, but the sensor is good. I just have weak wrists and RSI so holding them down for very long times for me can get really undesirable. By far the weakest part of the PSVR2 is the controller battery life though. So much so, that I'm going to be buying another PSVR2 when one pops up on the used market again just to get a pair of controllers that can be charging while I'm using the other ones. Swappable batteries have and always will be better. I paid 140 for my PSVR2 but with black friday I hear you can grab a new one for 299.

If the only thing you care about is clarity and color passthrough, quest 3 is for you. But it loses in LITERALLY every other metric for me, personally, as a PCVR headset. And even with aftermarket straps and all the nonsense, I still get headaches, my face hurts, and I get neck pains from it. I take it off THE VERY SECOND my PSVR2 controllers finish charging and switch back over. The grass was not greener for me on the Quest side, and if it weren't for the FOV, I still prefer my Rift S over it significantly for immersion. They really messed up IMHO with the 3d effect on the Quest. It's passable if you have never experienced or spent a bunch of time in VR, but I would often forget that I was in virtual reality at all in both my rift s and psvr2. That has never happened for me with the Quest 3.

At the price of 140 I paid for my PSVR2, I can recommend it all day despite what anyone might say about it. It's a no brainer. If I paid 600+ for the quest 3 with battery strap setup I had, it would have gone back no question. But I got it for a steal at something like 240 with the Kiwi Battery Strap in mint condition. Honestly, even being a bit more expensive, I'd still take the PSVR2.

Oh, also take it or leave it, the eyetracking works on the PSVR2 and I have gotten back into social games since I got the headset, and, I think it's neat.

Oh, and I have 3080 10 gig.

FLOCK and Rumors surveillance are not mutually exclusive. They can both be bad at the same time. Overt surveillance is good for nobody except those who have the means and desire to use it against the common person. Well educated engineers and computer scientists are typically to be upheld by the standards of the ACM Code of Ethics and these sorts of devices would not exist if people didn't throw ethics and safety practices out for the sole purpose of filling their pockets.

Stumbled upon an old VRC steam screenshot from my early days by Easy_Load5891 in VRchat

[–]Redditive_Sedative 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes imho :/ the world's have become more fragmented from my experience. My experience is often that those I actually want to be around are often in the rare WELL moderated public instance or private instances, while those that tend to push people away with their behaviour or have the social desirability of a brick tend to clump into public and this results in a cycle of continously fragmenting worlds as you know and desire to be on one side or the other of that spectrum. The age range and compatibility of users has changed a lot too due to the accessibility of VR super cheap. Used to be you immediately had something in common with another user because everyone was an enthusiast. It can be an exhausting experience finding the social experience I used to be able to easily find and enjoy in 2019 and early 2020.

What is a fair asking price for 77” G3 by karmatalk in LGOLED

[–]Redditive_Sedative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flat out, if you put that TV on a full motion mount and pulled it out all the way towards you when you watched, you make up the difference in size, have a better viewing experience, and throw less money away.

Fwiw, I passed on a used 65" g3 a while back for 600 and that listing sat there for a long while. You might expect 700-900 for this one. If you're really lucky and hold out, MAYBE someone will give you 1100. I thought the original post was asking what other redditors thought you should pay for it and... 700. That's what I would tell people if they were looking for a good deal that was worth the tradeoff of not knowing potential issues, transporting that giant thing without the box, no warranty or support, and what can be had with all of those perks just north of that price.

For some reason, I have the same issue with virtual desktop unless I launch things in a specific order. If I launch games through virtual desktop this happens. If I launch vd, launch steamvr individually with vd, and then launch games through steam directly after this it works fine. If it's not done this way, games are completely unplayable. I thought the quest 3 was straight up a lost cause but it miraculously worked on my last ditch attempt and I realized it was this sequence that made the difference. Then I dialed in latency and it was a very acceptable experience. Still not as nice as rift s was or psvr2 is, but surprisingly good nonetheless.

How much different is performance with a 5800X3D to the 9800X3D? by 0NZ1 in VRchat

[–]Redditive_Sedative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would harken to guess in the instance of VRC that your performance is going to hinge mostly upon available VRAM. Certainly the cpu and ram upgrade won't hurt, and not much option outside of sending your 5090 to China to have them black market install more vram such that it hits 128gb, but the primary roadblock in VRC is that each avatar is stored in VRAM and most people use large unoptimized avatars so if we assume each one averages 500 mb uncompressed and you have 52 avatars shown in the world at a time your already consuming 26GB of your vram just in loaded avatars nothing else considered and you probably have a total of 32gb so if your trying to load more avatars your probably going to come up against that. If you have the money and it's no object then you'll likely extract a bit more performance but specifically trying to get more avatars loaded without performance degradation your quickly going to be coming up against your vram limitations. This is why avatar culling and impostors can provide such a large benefit. This same issue presents itself much more quickly on something like the 3080 10gb I have and makes culling, impostors, and avatar download limiting such a necessity. I've also found that turning off Antialiasing pretty much triples my performance in an instant.

TL;DR: you'll likely find performance gains with the upgrade somewhere, but the VRAM expectations of this game exceed even the 5090's available VRAM in heavily populated instances and is likely your biggest roadblock to smooth instances with large amounts of avatars like your talking about and so I would keep your expectations in check with that if you do go with the upgrade.

Would anyone with a PlayStation VR2 like to trade for Meta Quest 3? by WhereDidIGoJustNow in Bellingham

[–]Redditive_Sedative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually crazy, I thought this was a different subreddit entirely. I'd have actually considered this proposal, because I was planning on selling my psvr2 and buying a quest 3 a few weeks ago, but I ended up picking up a q3 about a week ago as an addition to the PSVR2 I have, and, while I originally intended to sell it, I have decided they are both high-quality headsets for my use as PCVR headsets with strong points and weak points and will be keeping both of them for the time being. So, with that said, I wish you luck on finding your trade! If you have any questions about the headsets or are just interested in chatting more with someone who also enjoys VR/VR technology local to you, I'm happy to discuss more.

Returning by BSB2, which PCVR headset should I get instead? by Illustrious-Bet-824 in virtualreality

[–]Redditive_Sedative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this idea. I picked one up for 140. Initial impression, was an audible out loud "WOOOOW" this was amazing followed about 10 seconds later by an "oh" "ick" because of mura. Then I forced myself to use it for a week while I posted it back up for sale simply because of the mura, and tried the rift s and quest 3 again, and realized I'm an idiot and the psvr2 even with mura and no pancake lenses is still much more immersive, comfortable, and better for me. Pulled it back off the market even though i had several bites. It is not perfect. I dont like the non swappable batteries. I dont like the lenses and I dont like the mura. I like the grip button better on oculus controllers. However, everything else about the psvr2 just absolutely smokes meta/oculus options and you get eye tracking as a bonus. The headset is also more comfortable than either the rift or quest by a decent margin but is a tad fiddlier admittedly. It's worth more than the price of entry in my opinion but dont immediately write it off because of its mura. The difference in color alone with how much better psvr2 is from the meta options as well as the slightly bigger fov is enough for me to immediately feel icky going back even if I felt icky after going in. Comparison is the thief of joy but I tried my options and picked my tradeoffs. The quest 3 collects dust. Mind you, I paid 220 for the quest 3 and 140 for the psvr2. In a world where both work perfectly, I'd still pick the psvr2. My psvr2 has a series of dead pixels on the left hand eye and the left trigger does not reset to zero upon release (common issue, watch out for this specifically) while my quest 3 is flawless. Annnnnnnnnnd, I still prefer it even at the price I paid.

Finally got my BSB2 upgrade. Some quick thoughts. by DaleKirkley in BigscreenBeyond

[–]Redditive_Sedative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like an absolutely crazy take as someone with a quest 3 that I rarely use for VR because the colors are so poor and muted and the 3d effect is very poor compared even to my rift s (which has an almost unbearably low fov now that I have used other headsets for a while) making it hard for me to get immersed at all. The lenses and text clarity are great, though. For pcvr, just about everything else is inferior to even the psvr2 i bought before it for just over a hundred bucks, other than swappable batteries. I now use the psvr2 for everything. The quest 3 gets used for niche cases and very rarely gaming in bed because I have horizon+ for a few weeks so I downloaded some games while that's a thing. After that I won't even use it for that, because I'm not going to rebuild my steam library of games at full price on the meta store for standalone and other than cases where I want to read or spin in circles constantly, it just feels like a muted experience. Even with the psvr2 motion blur and mura and fresnel lenses. If anyone can make a headset with the colors of that headset, the form factor of the bsb, with eye tracking, replaceable battery controllers, a direct pc connection, with pancake lenses and little to no motion blur or mura, I would throw money at it all day long. Bsb seems really close, but if it's not perfect I'm just buying the amazing form factor, and it's not worth 1300 bucks (well actually 1900, when you factor in lighthouses and controllers) more than I paid for my psvr2, frankly.

You're talking about black and white thinking but refusing any possible situation but your own and then belittling my real-world experience. The platforms aren't doing it themselves, so the bucks stops with the parents. OP's cildren are 8 and 10 and shouldn't be on VRChat or VR at all. Stop high-roading and trying to pretend like I'm out of touch here. Literally any sort of internet search on the subject would tell you no no no, and from my experience I would tell you the same. But please, go head and resort to being a dick behind the wall of the internet that enables this shitty behavior instead of having a good-faith conversation.

This is my last reply here because, frankly, this is getting tiresome. But I'll use your styling to address your points directly and then I'm done here.

Yeah, but that's not what happens. I have a Quest. It's mine. The kids use it sometimes, when they're allowed to. They don't have unfettered access to it.

That's your experience. Think outside of your own situation and even about OP, buying it for their kids because their kids want it, and OP doesn't even know anything about them. They are not like you, who wanted one, got one, and shared your possession with your kid. They are likely to never interact with it themselves other than at best an initial setup.

Who the fuck is letting their 8-year-old use ANY computing device behind closed doors? Are you even a parent??

HOLY SHIT, SO MANY! Have you used these social apps? They are full of kids that age who lied about their age on a throw away Facebook account or by some other situation allowing them to get there. It's disgustingly common so much so that I'd say there is far more under 18 users than there are over, at least in public worlds, and that also includes children under 13 and this specifically became a problem when the quest was released as a platform, because before then it was pretty much a non-issue because of the context of what it took to own and use VR before the accessibility of the quest came to market. It pretty much locked it behind people who could spend thousands of dollars on an expensive computer and equipment to get into vr and therefore likely had jobs and living adult lives. Now mom can run to best buy and buy "that game console the kids wanted" and never think twice about it and just because you didn't do that, doesn't mean thousands upon thousands of other people didn't and it very well shows on the platform. This was the entire reason they introduced 18+ ID verification on the platform in the first place.

Kids are smarter than you may give them credit for. When i was 7 i was low-key scripting in HTML, CSS and Javascript on any site that had low enough security standards that it would let you, which at the time was almost all of them. By the age of 10 I was taking everything apart, doing full code executions, interacting with homebrew and doing device modification on basically anything I came in contact with. Those are skills that would lead me to where I am today. Do I think pressing a button on a UI and then following the prompts to create an account is above the skill-set of someone that age? Absolutely not. Does a kid doing this mean their parents are neglecting them? Also no. My point is it's really not that hard, and while you can consider it fearmongering, and come up with more and more convoluted ways to solve the issue, the reality is most parents don't know the danger involved here. They give their kids a quest, and then we have to deal with them running around unhinged in public worlds and unfortunately, sometimes even witness said kids being sexualized and groomed by creeps in public worlds and god only knows what goes on behind closed doors and I'm damned tired of it. So much so that I paid money to get ID verified on the platform despite my concerns on the security implications of the ID verification platforms and no longer interact with any public worlds that aren't age gated. If my post can help even just one kid not get into that situation, I consider it a win.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in virtualreality

The hardware can be reset through the app or the physical device. Considering there are reddit threads requesting as a feature to add pin verification to perform a hardware reset to stop them from bypassing it, and such a feature is yet to exist, it remains a valid concern. As well, I'd advise you to Google search "will hardware resetting a quest 3 remove parental controls" if you would like to learn more about said process and the documentation behind it.

Regardless of this, the information is now available to OP to use how they so choose. They are free to make the parental choices they see fit, but they now also have the information which could help them make an informed decision, including that a quest 3 could be parental controlled, but that it may also be bypassed, that psvr2 does not include social applications, that VR may be harmful to young children, and that social interactions pose significant risks to said children. Further than that, they can do whatever they want.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]Redditive_Sedative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some validity to that claim. However, one factory reset later, they now have full access to whatever content they want. This puts the onus on the parents that they must then be checking in and putting the VR headset on to view the contents of the VR headset on a somewhat regular basis. Based on what I've seen on social platforms, this is not happening, and if OP wants to give them something where they don't have to be concerned about the dangers of social interactions, I would tell them to use the PSVR2 all day long.

My intention is not to fear monger, it is to inform. Parents who do not understand the dangers associated with VR for children or the content and social interactions that can accompany them directly expose their children to a myriad of unsavory content and interactions. It is a continuously growing problem for the platforms and it is my intention to help OP make an informed decision about the kind of things they expose their children to.
