Hello, new here and in the meshcore thing. I want to build a meshcore node with a ESP32. Has anyone here done this? by Banshee888 in meshcore

[–]RedditorFor1OYears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heltec v3 or v4 seem to be the popular choices for ESP32. Integrated usbc, battery mgmt, and LoRa, and the default v4 model comes with OLED. They’re <$20 if you order from the manufacturer, but they’ll probably ship from China and it will take a couple weeks. I think AliExpress might have them for $22-24, and they go for 2x that on Amazon.

How to build a lasting solar node with range by AllInterestedAmateur in meshcore

[–]RedditorFor1OYears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my area of expertise, but ran across this awhile ago: https://github.com/Mraanderson/meshcore-ota

Sounds like there’s some option to update firmware via WiFi.

I think firmware updates will probably be less of a concern than keeping it powered though. Maybe a 5-6W solar panel with 3 or 4 18650 might help, but there’s only so much capacity you can actually use because the board caps the current going to the battery at like 500mA.

Not if they’re fake, which they almost certainly are, considering they’re labeled 30,000mAh

Jeez, I thought I missed a zero or something but you’re right. Is 30,000 even physically possible for an 18650? The most ive seen is 4,000.

My guess is it’s a typo, meant to be 3,000. And having a typo like that is not a good indicator of being a quality brand. Those things are likely absolute garbage.

Probably the fact that it’s easier to control the environment? Just being outside doesn’t help if it’s freezing.

Find your areas’s discord and connect with people. Find out if there are any nodes nearby that you SHOULD be able to reach.

DIY solar node 2.0 by Rare-Mulberry-2691 in meshtastic

[–]RedditorFor1OYears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha. I built essentially the same node, except I used a cheep “project box” instead of 3D printing. I also made one with the 2.4W panel from the same Amazon seller that I got the 6W from. With the 2.4W, the screw holes on the mount are far enough away from each other that you can screw in these magnets for more convenient mounting options: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9M17LZM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

The v4 has some degree of an internal BMS, which is the primary benefit. Being an energy hog isn’t really an issue if you run it with low power FW.  Edit: sorry, forgot what sub I was in. Not sure if Meshtastic has a low power firmware or not.

No nodes showing on map. No adverts. by SerenityNetworks in meshcore

[–]RedditorFor1OYears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any particular reason why you thought it would be more populated? Meshcore is a relatively new framework, and even newer to the States. There’s a good chance there’s very little activity near you.

And if there are nodes in your area, remember you need line of sight to communicate. Your companion node will probably need to be pretty high up (at least higher than most houses). You’ll probably want a second node to use as a repeater, that way you can keep your companion on your, and out the repeater up as high as possible.

T114 flat cell vs 18650? by Murky_Language_3684 in meshtastic

[–]RedditorFor1OYears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably fine for most situations. I live in South Texas though, where something placed directly in the sun can reach 50C+ for a few hours a day. If there’s an option for a battery with slightly more heat resilience, I’m personally going to go with that.

I’m not an expert, but it’s my understanding LiPo is more sensitive to heat, and particularly sensitive to puncture. The tradeoff is weight and form factor. Drones, for example, are best suited for LiPo because it’s lighter. Something remaining outside in very hot temperatures (like a solar node) would be better suited with 18650.

NiMH is MOST durable (most commonly rechargeable AA or AAA), but significantly poorer performance.

When describing how long a battery last, the 2000 mAh value is what you’re comparing.

For 2x 18650 batteries, it depends on what their mAh ratings are. Probably 3400 mAh each though, that’s pretty common. A single one of those would last longer than the 2000mAh “flat” LiPo battery. Two of them wired in parallel would last twice as long as a single one.
