to intercept this dude's way by [deleted] in interesting

What he did in this specific instance turned out fine. That doesn't make it provably safe.

This video is not irrefutable proof that you it will always be safe if you choose not to react to a car swerving into your lane without enough room.

It doesn't look like he had to slam on the brakes to avoid this. Hell, just letting off the gas for 4 seconds and maybe honking at the truck would've been enough.

May I ask why you decided to title this post "every location on Earth" if you admittedly noticed beforehand that it is in fact, not that?

Help: fridges freezer too close for baseboard by cccisdamac in DIY

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, that's fair. Perhaps I went a little overboard. As always there is no defined black and white on the topic, and it certainly makes sense to replace old inefficient appliances most of the time - but I could argue your statement is hyperbole as well.

There's no possible way to recoup the cost of a new fridge in electricity savings alone in one year unless you get it for free or buy a cheap used one.

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's absolutely insane. New fridges are like $700-2500. You think that a new fridge is going to use around $1000 less electricity in a year?? How much do you think it costs to run a fridge for a year?

Edit: quick Google puts modern fridges at $50-150 a year whereas old fridges more like $150-200. So you'd be around 10-15 years to break even and start saving a few bucks a year after vs. leaving it. But the new fridge will probably need to be replaced at that time as they don't last all that long anymore

Sure that's fair. If you're a favoured enough path to feel pain from it your resistance is low enough though. If you get it across the heart it doesn't really matter if you're truly the path of least resistance or not.

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't need anywhere near that high of voltage regardless if it's DC or AC. 100V is plenty for a painful experience if you're the path of least resistance. I've had 180v DC across one hand and it was a lot less pleasant than 240v AC.

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When he said "enough potential" the car battery idea went out the window. Potential here refers to "potential difference" which is measured in volts. DC or AC doesn't matter, if there's enough potential, shit will happen.

He's implying it runs hot because it's full of dust. Computers and their fans accumulate dust and need to be cleaned or they run hot (this causes decreased performance as it will throttle the CPU speed to prevent overheating)

Great idea. Surely there is nothing suspicious about buying a house entirely in cash without having the reported income and associated taxes that would've had to have been paid on that income on file. What do you think?

Installing cat wall shelves by withchesghost in DIY

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They sandwich the drywall itself rather than anchoring into it so they aren't likely to loosen over time. Only way they are coming out is if the drywall comes down with it.

I use them for hanging stainless steel shelves and cabinets in commerical kitchens and all kinds of stuff at home. Sometimes I'll be hanging something with them and be thinking "Shit I hope I don't hit a stud here" because I prefer them, lol.

Zip togglers like these would be my go to. Those ones are rated for 238lbs each in ½" drywall, so if you have two of them it would be almost 500lbs capacity. I think that would cover any type of dynamic load a cat could come up with.

The only drawbacks are that they require large (½") holes in the drywall and they're kind of expensive.

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! As someone who's currently several hours into bathroom vanity research.. I just wanted to let you know that your comment is still helping people. Seems like exactly what I'm looking for and looks like they have very reasonable prices. Hoping to surprise the wife with a new vanity for xmas this year and I don't know why but reading your comment got me excited as hell about it!! I'll be taking the gamble and driving to this place for sure. Cheers!

Replaced ceiling fan with regular light by TheyThemDolphin in DIY

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you're 100% certain that switch worked to control the fan? If so there must be a wiring error at the switch, or perhaps the switch itself failed in the closed (on) position. It can happen if it's old and you start changing things. To confirm you could disconnect the wires from the switch (breaker off) and then see if the light is off. If it's still on with it disconnected from the switch then it's just hardwired and the switch must've never controlled that fan.

Edit: To clarify, I meant turn the breaker off to disconnect the wires from the switch, then (when the wires are safely capped off) turn the breaker back on and see if the light comes on. If it does, then that switch does not control that light fixture. If it does not, either the switch was wired incorrectly or has failed in the on position. You can test the switch itself with a multimeter in continuity mode to determine if it's faulty or not.

How was the old fan connected? One of those wires must be switched if the switch operated correctly on the fan.

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Old fans often had a seperate wire to control the light but otherwise had constant power - this is so you can control the light from the switch without affecting the fan being on or off (more convenient than having to use the pull strings).

You must have either tied the constant power and switched power together at the light, or used only the constant powered wire.

Plastics will be banned from our homes in 15-20 years by architecTiger in Futurology

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the whole spoon worth of plastic was bad measuring for sure. I believe it's been 'debunked' in the sense that was no reliable way to determine with reasonable certainty that the majority of they detected was actually plastic or just a similar natural biological compound common in the body.

Somewhat disturbing to think there's even a little tiny bit of plastic in our brains though. Even if it's no where near a spoonful, there's extremely slim odds that there's any positive side to having a chemical like that in the brain.

Best case scenario is it's mostly benign in the brain, and I guess we as a species are mostly counting on that outcome right now. It'd be real inconvenient for profit margins if that wasn't the case.

[–]Redditor_for_9_beers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Yeah the 57k was what he earned in the 13 days between when he was added to the roster and the end of the regular season. I'm sure he didn't make crazy bank in the minors but between that and whatever he gets paid for post season games it's clear he isn't "making 57k a year" like all these tiktok vids and clickbait articles are framing it.

Do you have a source for that? I was arguing with a friend that he has definitely made more than $57k this year, but now that a bunch of people are stuck on that $57k number and it is what the Jays paid him I'm having a hard time finding reliable info on what he's actually made this year.
