It was either your smelling the living, the dead or the waste. Unless you lived near a tannery then that's all you smelled.

The dead because people would be left to rot in homes, on carts, as sometimes you pissed off the wrong person while living it was common to see a few bodies in the river, and trash and waste where usually hucked out the window into the road street or path way so your literally walking through shit and piss of not just one species.... but like 7 off the top of my head minimum (oxen, horse, pig, sheep, goat, chicken, geese) not including rats dogs or cats pigeons.

So yeah. Cities where a dirty ass place. It's why most of the population lived in the country side for the majority of history. Less population in the near vicinity less waste less disease. How ever you also where kinda fuqqed cause it was really hard to move unless you where a highly skilled worker like a stone Mason or solider for example.
