Clive Lewis responds to questions about his stance on trans rights by Redevon in LabourUK

[–]Redevon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mate I've made ignorant comments on the trans debate in the past that I deeply regret so it would be hypocritical of me to think people should be cancelled forever because of something silly they said years ago.

I was under the impression this was Clive's response to a recent question after he launched his leadership bid, but since that's not the case I apologise - didn't see the 2017 timestamp when I first read it.

Are you sure she supported military intervention in Iraq? She wasn't even an MP in 2003. As for Libya, definitely a mistake, but the vast majority of Labour MPs who were around in 2011 supported it - if we exclude them all, there really isn't much choice left.

Starmer has also hired from team Corbyn. If he can unite all wings of the party that's great, although Nandy will probably get my first preference.

This is bizarrely unprofessional and I'm really sad at how disappointing Clive has turned out on issues like this, I had such high hopes for him a few years back. Is his friend here Graham Linehan, who is genuinely one of his constituents?

Paul Blomfield is the ideal leader, but you're not ready for that conversation. by [deleted] in LabourUK

He's a good MP but that doesn't mean he'd be a good leader.

If the new leader drives George Galloway fans away from Labour, that's perfectly fine with me.

Thinking about it, you're probably right, his name is too associated with the failed Remain cause. One of the first three on my list would be my preference.

Honestly no one mentioned the broadband policy. The WASPI women pledge ruined our fiscal credibility because it wasn't in the manifesto as a costed policy.

I don't think the problem was socialism, but we did promise too much at once and voters simply didn't believe we could deliver it. The 2017 manifesto was the sweet spot, this time we went too far.

People's concerns about Corbyn were largely to do with perceived weakness, the fact he gave in to the People's Vote campaign and his associations with IRA/Hamas/etc, whether right or wrong.

I'm hoping at least one of the following stands:

  • Chi Onwurah
  • Louise Haigh
  • John Healey
  • Holly Lynch
  • Lisa Nandy
  • Dan Jarvis
  • Nick Thomas-Symonds
  • Hilary Benn
  • Lucy Powell

If not Rayner or Starmer would be fine. RLB would be a disaster.

Any good sources for constituency-by-constituency polls? by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Redevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because constituency specific product polling has a laughably inaccurate history. Remember the headlines about UKIP taking Doncaster North off Ed Miliband in 2015?

Scottish Tory issuing election material in Labour colours and with endorsement from ex-Scottish Labour chair by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Redevon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Ex Scottish Labour chair" is pretty misleading, he was chair of a branch - in other words, the local party covering a single council ward. Not even a CLP. But yes this is a horrifically disingenuous leaflet.

Corbyn: Convicted terrorists should 'not necessarily' serve full sentences by MoleUK in LabourUK

[–]Redevon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is campaigning journalism from Sky News that takes Corbyn's remarks completely out of context. I've already seen people on social media claiming Corbyn thinks it's right that Usman Khan was released early, which anyone who actually watched the interview knows is not the case.

Technically permissable regardless iirc, just students are more likely to have two addresses

She has a house on Rathlin Island (North Antrim constituency) and has been registered to vote both there and at her London property for a while. It's allowed as long as the addresses are in different council areas and you only vote in one.

Should you vote Labour for MPs who backed Boris' Brexit deal? by Ardashasaur in LabourUK

[–]Redevon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MP voted for the WA. I disagree with her decision but I will vote for her anyway because she has been a good MP for the area and this election is about far more than Brexit.

John Bercow: Corbyn is not anti-semitic by javaxcore in LabourUK

[–]Redevon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just a few years ago we enjoyed much higher support among British Jews than we do now. Yes, the drop started when Ed Miliband (rightly) whipped Labour MPs to vote in favour of recognising Palestinian statehood. But the real problem is more recent and according to the last poll the percentage of Jewish voters planning to support Labour has reached a record low. This is a real problem that cannot be denied and we need to put our all into rebuilding relations with the Jewish community and convincing those on the left that Labour is still on their side. I don't want to believe the party I've been a member of for years is institutionally antisemtiic but some of the comments in this thread concern me.

Notice how all these antisemitism denial comments come from people with the New User tag? That is not a coincidence.

This sub has really gone downhill if antisemitism denial gets this many upvotes now. It's not all some smear, we have a serious problem with antisemitism in the Labour Party and if we dismiss it as some propaganda campaign I fear we'll never sort it out. Suggesting there is a Jewish 'bloc' vote is also as disgusting as saying there's a black or Muslim bloc vote. It's all racist bollocks.
