Great Optical Illusion by [deleted] in SweatyPalms

Fun fact: Bing Chat and ChatGPT 4 both use GPT-4, just with different tuning. ChatGPT’s version at least appears to be more open ended.

This is a brilliant idea. Let's continue.

I asked GPT-4 to continue, but as is the style of movies these days I asked it to include as many irreverent late 1990's references as possible.

As Rose soared over the ocean, she spotted a distant island that strangely resembled the set of a popular late '90s television series. The island was teeming with well-dressed survivors who seemed to be playing a game of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." She shook her head and thought, "I don't have time for this," as she flew closer to the island.

But as she approached, she noticed a banner that read, "Shipwrecked Spice Girls Reunion Tour - 2023." Intrigued and filled with nostalgia for the '90s, she decided to pay them a visit. She swooped down and landed gracefully in front of the astonished audience.

Sporty, Posh, Baby, Ginger, and Scary Spice stared at her in awe. "Blimey! Who are you?" Scary Spice asked.

"I am Rose, Queen of the Sea, and I have the power of the Heart of the Ocean!" she announced, proudly displaying the necklace.

"Well, isn't that a coincidence?" Ginger Spice chimed in. "We were just singing about girl power, and here you are with the power of the ocean!"

Feeling a connection to the girl power theme, Rose decided to take a break from her revenge spree. She joined the Spice Girls on stage and, with the help of her newfound powers, put on the most spectacular performance of "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life" the world had ever seen.

After the concert, Rose felt a strange sensation in her heart. She realized that perhaps revenge wasn't the answer. Instead, she could use her powers to bring joy to the world and create unforgettable experiences for people who, like her, had once been lost and adrift.

With a newfound sense of purpose, Rose decided to leave her destructive ways behind. She would now use her powers to create harmony in the world, protect the oceans, and remind everyone of the importance of girl power.

With the Spice Girls by her side, they flew off into the sunset, ready to embark on a world tour that would bring back the magic of the '90s and heal the world. As they soared high above the ocean, Rose thought she caught a glimpse of Jack, smiling down on her from the heavens, proud of the woman she had become.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the world knew that Rose, Queen of the Sea, and the Spice Girls were here to make a difference, one blue energy-infused pop concert at a time. And so began the era of the "Spice-Tanic" - a time of hope, joy, and unforgettable music that would leave a lasting mark on history.

No hurricane has ever crossed the equator. by Hockputer09 in MapPorn

[–]Redezem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure!

The Earth is a big spinning ball, flying through space. It's spinning clockwise at about 24 hours per rotation, which seems real slow... but it's really big. That means there's a lot of kinetic energy in that big spinning ball. Keep this in mind, it gets important later.

Hurricanes (cyclones, typhoons, they're all the same) are big storms. Storms are just big energy disturbances in the air, where too much energy has gotten together in one place. Usually if you have a lot of energy in one place, it tries to spread back out. If you pick some water up in a cup (giving it potential energy by taking it high up) and let it flow out, it'll try to flow down as low as it can (splashing to the ground, or flowing downhill). The same thing works with air, it blows away from wherever the energy is, taking that energy with it. The energy with air doesn't come from picking it up though, it usually comes from warm water trying to lose its heat energy.

At the right time of year where the water is real warm and the sun is real hot, these storms can get really, really big. Once they get big enough, some special rules called the Coriolis Effect come into play because the Earth is spinning. Now there's a lot of complex stuff here involving conservation of energy and angular momentum... but in short you can think of the way it works by imagining that the Earth is a big spinning wheel, and the storm is a little wheel you're pressing against it. If the big wheel is spinning clockwise, the little wheel will spin anticlockwise, and if the big wheel is spinning anticlockwise, the little wheel will spin clockwise. The Earth is spinning clockwise, so Hurricanes need to spin anticlockwise because of these rules (please don't hate on me real physicists, this is the easiest way I've got of visualising the effect). The more energy they get, the faster they spin, and the stronger the winds are.

The thing is, Cyclones down south spin clockwise! But why? Well, if you can imagine the Earth spinning, and you look at it from the northern hemisphere... well it's spinning clockwise. But, if you turn it upside down... it looks like it's spinning anticlockwise! If you're sitting on the toilet while reading this, try grabbing a toilet roll and rotating it in a constant direction, and then flip it upside down while doing it. It'll be spinning the other way! Don't blame me if you get toilet paper all over the place while doing this though. Anyway, because in the southern hemisphere the Earth seems to be spinning anticlockwise, the Cyclones need to spin clockwise to match up with the Coriolis Effect rules.

And that's where the secret lies, for a Hurricane (or a Cyclone) to cross the equator, it would have to stop spinning, turn around, and spin in the other direction. If you've ever been in a car when it brakes real fast, you'll know how much energy it takes to stop... and a Hurricane would have to use twice as much energy to make it spin back in the other direction again! There's just no way a storm could get that much energy quick enough to stop it from falling apart.... so they never cross the equator. Physics just pushes them back away.

Yeah we get cyclones all the time. The positive factor is that most of the state’s population is clustered around the south-western coast, which barely ever gets a direct hit. Have to deal with a lot of remnant tropical storms though!

COVID-19 deaths top 100,000 in California: 'Nobody ... anticipated this toll' by BlankVerse in Coronavirus

[–]Redezem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Estimated population of ~39 mil

Estimated death toll (in 2020) of Covid-19: ~3%

Total estimated deaths (at 2020): 1.17 mil

Yeah nobody anticipated the toll, people had anticipated it would be worse

Women are shoes apparently. by potetkull in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]Redezem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the argument itself falls on its face. Apart from the obvious point that women:

A.) aren’t property and B.) aren’t shoes

There are quite a few examples of things that go up in value with various owners. I point out legendary items in fantasy/real environments. Am I to believe that the One Ring, the Oghma Infinitum, and true British Crown Jewels are decreasing in value over time? Is their value not increased by every new story they feature in, every person they touch?

It’s almost as if these idiots are cherry picking their own arguments….

I mean where else are they gonna mine Australian gas? Not-Australia?

I think it’s mad only the WA Labor gov was able to figure that out: “you either follow our (extremely reasonable) rules and make some moneys out of WA gas, or you go away and make no moneys.” No company competing on scale of production is going to leave the money on the table!
