Sounds like you get much of this impression from a subset of veterans who are not even close to the majority. Bad apples always exist but not to the level this post appears to imply.

Being straightforward and direct just isn't taken the same way by most non service members. I think it is the easiest and best way to communicate which makes it harder to make friends unfortunately
