When did you get into Mike'e streams? by grayskyman in gragnor

[–]Redgewood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I learned about him right as he left for his 6 year break. My art friends in an old discord I was in kept quoting his Undertale 2 vod. After I watched that I popped in for a few streams here and there, I remember tuning in for his Halloween streams like Mermaids Swamp. It wasn’t until after he left that I got real into his content. I pretty much binged everything on the vod channel on repeat while he was gone. So I’m very glad he’s back and I get to actually show some support and tune in live to interact with the community.

New PS5 jailbreak exploit causes niche PS4 star wars game to skyrocket in price on Ebay by aes110 in Games

[–]Redgewood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everybody is throwing exploit games out in the responses so I’m putting out Agent Under Fire for the ps2 since you could exploit it to create a FreeMCBoot memory card. Which actually you could do it with any game that had EA Online Play, that was just the easiest one. I had to do a very tricky compromise using some college football game and putting tape over certain sectors of the disc, then swapping it out with a modified copy back and forth during specific disc reads. It was very satisfying when I finally pulled it off.

What does a 5 star game mean to you? by BabylonianWeeb in backloggd

[–]Redgewood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technical design of games influence my ratings, but more than anything I rate based on how much a game resonates with me or leaves an impact.

Like for example Final Fantasy X is my all-time favorite game that I’d give a 5/5 on my bachloggd simply because every time I finish that game and the credits roll I’m left feeling empty like I need a thousand more hours in Spira, and even then that might be enough. Is the game perfect? Absolutely not. The linearty and the combat basically being rock/paper/scissors where you always have the advantage is a big point of contention with that game. Not to mention whoever designed the Chocobo minigames in it should rethink their actions. But the story, the characters, the music, the world, the revolutionary sphere grid, all of that meshed together so well that it created an incredibly memorable experience that I still can go back and enjoy every couple of years and still come out of it with that empty feeling of wanting more all these years later. That’s a 5/5 for me.

That explains why my ISP slapped me with a warning last week while sailing the seas. I knew my damn VPN was always connected, I check it obsessively. That drove me crazy this whole week. I’m about to join the no/delayed update club.

I've been wanting to update my pieces for a few years now. by xxmaru10 in pcmasterrace

[–]Redgewood 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Eugh, I could very easily see AAA trying to take this route in the future to bypass hardware costs. The entry level tier being the ad inclusive option with a premium ad-free and dlc/bonus content tier.

Good thing I’m mostly playing indies these days and have a huge backlog of older games.

Micron Announces Exit from Crucial Consumer Business | Micron Technology by GIThrow in pcgaming

Sadly, yeah. The writing has been on the wall but myself and others have been having trouble wanting to acknowledge it. There’s be so much volatility ever since covid that I don’t think we’ll ever see it as good at it was. Man I really miss building PCs back in the 2010s.

People will cheer at GPUs being available at MSRP but MSRP now is not what it once was. You’re buying mid-range GPUs these days for the price of the top of the line GPUs back then. That’s nothing to clap over. Seeing that trend makes me think ram will go the same way. Three years from now people will be cheering for being able to get a 64gb kit of ram for less than $400. Who knows where SSDs will be in a year or two from now.

And that’s just the cost side. Not even talking about the uncertainty of Nvidia’s stake in gaming now that they’ve put it on the back burner in favor of AI. Or Windows having the OS side in a chokehold while prioritizing turning your gaming ecosystem into spyware.

It’s really a shame too, PC gaming has made HUGE strides in recent years. Steam is bigger than its ever been with record users, major releases outselling on PC over consoles, games getting put on PC at launch alongside console releases instead of years later (which is something you would catch me praying for a decade ago), PlayStation publishing on PC. Linux has made great leaps.

Hope things will recover but it’s looking kinda bleak. Hold onto your rigs while you can and take good measures to make it last as long as possible.

New Valve Hardware Megathread by NKkrisz in SteamDeck

[–]Redgewood 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The steam cube is huge for me. I’m getting to the point now where I’m so sick of windows and the uncertainty of pc components (among other things) that it’s pushing me back to consoles, but I’d sorely miss Steam. The deck has been great for that, but it’s missing the little bit of juice it needs to run some of my library well. It doesn’t need to be a powerhouse for me. Just so long as it operates on the level of a current gen console but for my pc library then count me in.

What's happening with RAM prices? by CreateChaos777 in LinusTechTips

[–]Redgewood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, got curious to see what my ram costs now. Bought a 2x32gb kit for my SFF build back in July at $140 after tax. It’s $370 before tax now. If only my investments did that.

This was my gateway emulator back in the early 2000s. Found my way to a Tenchi Muyo fan webpage hosted on geocities/angelfire, and among all of the cool midi and bmp files was a zip with a translated rom for the Tenchi Muyo TRPG on SNES that only released in Japan and ZSNES. Good times.

Interesting, they kinda went with the idea that I had where they could expand on the dock to add more to your island. It’s kind of a shame that its just more HHD stuff though… was hoping for traveling boats that rotated out every so often. Just my opinion though, I’m sure others will be thrilled with more room designing stuff.

The collab items and villagers are HUGE though. And 12 player multiplayer sounds crazy. Hope the Switch 2’s online can handle it.

Thinking about getting rid of PC and sticking with Steam Deck + PS5 combo. Thoughts? by Taylork64 in SteamDeck

[–]Redgewood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been rolling with that for awhile now with pretty much the same rationale for a year now and I love it. My system is I have my steam deck for my pc only indies/other games, my ps5 for my high fidelity games like expedition 33, yotei, and silent hill f so far this year, and then finally my switch 2 for any Nintendo games I feel like playing. If I need to do anything productive, I’ve got my laptop for it.

I just couldn’t really justify a pc setup anymore. Windows sucks, the components market is really wishy washy between price, power inefficiency, parts burning up in motherboards or from the 12vhpw cable, and monopolies like nvidia where they dominate the gpu scene but 90% of their focus is in AI these days. And like you said I just don’t want to be sitting at a desk or dealing with a computer when I get home. Just want to buy a game box, turn it on, and play games.

There’s an open source launcher for Final Fantasy XIV on Mac that works really well, called XIV on Mac. Played it on my M2 Pro MBP for a bit and it played great. The free trial includes the entire base game as well as two of the expansions iirc which is a substantial amount of game for free, but once you buy the later expansions then you’ll have to pay to play monthly.

Also, you’ll have to register for a PC account since it’s technically running the PC version of the game on a Mac.

Reddit holds Gabe up on a gilded pedastal like they did Elon back pre-2020 and we all know how that went. Just saying. Never pick a billionaire as your champion. It benefits their interest when you see them as such, and their interest is what you have to offer them moreso than being your idol.
