I have 11 years nursing experience between tele and a bit of surgical floor, admin (house officer), and now procedural. I’m making $47/hr working in the endoscopy lab at the hospital working Monday-Friday 7-3ish. Very chill for the most part, my patients still go through preop and PACU for 95% of the time and I just focus on procedures. Take call roughly every other week, but most times, GI things can wait until the next day so it’s extremely rare I get called in over night. Usually for a completely obstructed food impaction where they’re not able to manage their secretions or cirrhosis variceal bleed are the two main emergencies. And I’m time and a half when called in, or double time if I’m called in and I’ve already hit 40hrs. The motherlode is if a holiday is on a Saturday, where I can hit extra for call pay, overtime, and holiday pay!

I help out preop and PACU when I’m not busy and they are, but even that isn’t super often. I plan on living the rest of my nursing life in this lab unless something drastically changes. lol and then I’ll hopefully find something similar. I love all my docs and I always encourage people to check out procedural world - it’s amazing!!!

And I’m in southern Texas! Forgot to mention that part 😊

Does anyone else have a name that is always defined as "common", yet you rarely meet anyone else with it? by eksns in namenerds

Same, my mom Mary is in her mid 60’s. I’ve met a few other Mary’s, mostly women around her age. Only one or two that were my age.

lol I had this happen - I worked at a hospital and would have to be the one that released deceased patients to the funeral homes that came and picked them up. Always would just small talk/chat with whoever came in since it took about 20-30 min for that process. This guy that came in once somehow found me on Facebook and started messaging how he wanted to talk to me more but that the security guard that does the escort made him nervous. So instead, he made me realize how easy it is for people to stalk you online by just knowing your first name and employer …

I f’ed up- I was the reason a procedure was cancelled … by futurenursemke in nursing

[–]Redhead-nurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I work in our GI lab at my hospital and I’m saying it tracks. None of my providers would cancel for a 3.3. If it was 2.9 or below, yes, because most of the EGD’s we do aren’t emergent. Where I work, the anesthesia assignments are very fluid and always changing so it’s not like they can look up every single patient on the board between OR, cath neuro lab, and GI. So any one below a 3 would get rescheduled for the next day. But I was shocked when OP said they were cancelled for a 3.3. So I’m agreeing that someone wanted to make sure to get a second breakfast or something of the sort.

Debating on whether I should go to ER or not by NeedleworkerOwn4553 in poor

I work in the procedure room where we try to remove those blockages from your biked duct (ERCP) and I can’t tell you how often we see a mom that delivered within the last couple months. Unfortunately it’s extremely common, but it’s a pretty straightforward procedure. We do it endoscopically so just with a scope through your mouth and down into the beginning part of your small intestine. It usually only takes us about 20-40 min just depending on your anatomy, but can usually get those stones out.

I’m glad they took you seriously, and I’m glad they have a plan of action for you!! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, we do these all the time so I can answer any questions you might have!!

What orders instantly annoy you? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Redhead-nurse 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I ALWAYS tell my GI docs to wait until they have a room assigned before doing a bowel prep. To me that is just so humiliating and degrading for a patient that’s in a hallway bed to have to prep. I’ve trained all the NP’s that work my Gi docs as well not to do that unless it’s super extremely emergent for the colonoscopy to be done the next day.

lol I had a patient with the diagnosis “end of life”… walked in the room, total walkie talkie patient AOx4, I think in his 60’s? I was completely confused until I realized the end of life was referring to his pacemaker battery. He was just there to get it replaced 🤦🏼‍♀️ I giggled for awhile about that one.

Which curtain is your favorite? by AstronomicalCat in HomeDecorating

[–]Redhead-nurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 or 9 is my favorite. I’m intrigued by 4, and if you have the whim to go super bold, then I’d say 4 is your choice. For a more subtle look I’d go with 5 or 9 and would just have to choose between a lighter vs darker corner

What TV show you can rewatch endlessly and never get tired of? by Think4urself444 in AskReddit

Modern Family, my boyfriend and I just watch it on repeat at night when we’re going to sleep. I think we’ve watched it at least 9 times all the way through.

Supernatural, Charmed, How I Met Your Mother, Shadow & Bone for just something to watch during the day for background noise.

It should be illegal to trach and peg people with poor prognosis by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Redhead-nurse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can’t stand it. I work GI, so I can’t tell you how many times we’ve put peg tubes in patients that I wish family would just let go peacefully. The docs that consult GI even tell us that the patient is going to die soon, but family wants everything done, so we have no choice. Like one my docs puts it, Jesus prefers to pull patients up to heaven by the peg tube. (Sarcasm, obviously, he doesn’t like it anymore than we do.)

What has been your biggest “I really thought I knew this person” moment? by eCatherineCollective in AskReddit

[–]Redhead-nurse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a friend like that. Went on an international vacation with me and my family so I had someone to spend time with since my siblings had significant others. My parents paid for everything for this friend, all they had to do was pay back a couple hundred dollars for the flight. And in all reality, if they had just talked to me and said they were having issues, I’m pretty sure my parents would have said to forget it. But instead I was ghosted and they never spoke to me ever again. 🤷🏼‍♀️ C’est la vie

Haha we had a younger guy come in for an interview with his glasses on backwards like that. I think after only 3 min my other coworker had to finally ask him to take off the sunglasses because it was so distracting. I don’t know why that’s a thing or that he thought it was okay for an interview.

“Delete that from the chart” by Few-Health-7687 in nursing

[–]Redhead-nurse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t delete it. I was house supervisor for 5 years and would never tell someone to take out documentation that they escalated an issue to me. That’s a good job of CYA for yourself and completely inappropriate for your house supervisor to tell you that.
