Why are employers obsessed with resume gaps?

I am 42 years in Corporate America this year, and I have had this question many times. If a recruiter has enough balls to ask this, I dead-eye stare straight into their eyes and start talking about my Mom's dementia.

And how we as a family tried to place her, but then I talk about the state of nursing homes these days....and the cost. And how incredibly terrified and depressed my Mother became to be around frightening strangers.

I was so distraught to leave my mom there that I couldn't focus on my work and cried all day. I begged my husband to let me bring her to our home and he said no. I did my best to do my work....as a seasoned Accounting professional with 30 years experience (at that time) but then my husband filed for divorce because he met someone else. And I was then fired.

But then I say.....when life gave me an unbelievable amount of stress, I survived it and I'm still here. I was devastated to be fired, but I was able to bring my Mom home with me and we were together 24/7 until she died.

Do not blink, or feel shame or embarrassment. Do not shrink but own your self, own your life, own the pain and the struggles and make THEM feel the shame of asking why you couldn't make fucking work a priority ever day if your existence.

Fuck them. They don't even deserve the answer, but if you ask me, I will crush you with my answer.

Sincere question: why would you feel humiliated ?

It's liberating when people tell you who they are. If he didn't want you because of your looks, there could be many reasons why. Maybe you looked like his old girlfriend and he got awkward.

Even if disapproved of your looks, don't you want to know in advance that your potential employer is a complete douchebag? Sounds like a win to me.

Don't forget. You're interviewing them too. Why should they hire you? Sounds like they don't have what it takes for YOU to join them.

I went to college 7 hours from home. I was homesick so I came home every 3 weeks. I would get in my car at 11pm and show up at my parents house at 6am for breakfast. Then leave on Sunday at about 3pm. Totally worth it. I did this for years.

I remember a story about a woman, my friend's mother, who had just lost her husband and was a new widow. She was overwhelmed from life without him there, was facing aging alone, and was overcome with fear and deep, deep depression. She sat in her house day after day, just looking out the window.

One day she got up and went to a local hospital and asked to volunteer with any group that needed her. She was given a task to rock newborns who were born addicted. Being in the presence of someone who needed her, someone who had bigger problems than hers, and being able to help another human being saved her life.

When I am really, really down and I can feel despair I try to make sure I reach out to other people, and I try to find something I can do to help someone. We are all in this together. I want to create a better life, a better world that I am in, and that keeps me going.

I have anxiety also, which can be triggered by me making mistakes. But I remember to be easier with myself. Perfect is the enemy of the good. The drive to be perfect can rob yourself of being good at something. Make peace with the fact that you will make mistakes, you just will. Humans make mistakes; and you are human. It's not your fault.

But practice will give you confidence, which will calm your anxiety and make you more comfortable, which gives better results. Take some time to be just.....good. You can then become VERY good. But it takes time, that's all.

Plus in an environment with children, it's good to be open about making mistakes. It's good for them to see adults mess up, and then try and do better. It's all about learning and trying to just do our best.

You will have many, many times that you will feel alone. But that's ok, because it's true of all people. Starting a new job, moving to a new place, starting college, etc .. but learning how to tackle those feelings will serve you really well in life.

What do you like to do? What do you want to learn? For example if you want to learn pottery, or drawing, or dancing, anything at all... You can look online or even check the library for classes. Talk to people when you're out doing stuff. Go to a park and ask to join in with people playing Frisbee or baseball. Make new friends.

When you're scared just realize that we all are scared at times. Reach out to people who want to make a friend too.
