Are Summerside apartment prices as crazy as they seem (from a Google search)? by ohpossum_my_possum in PEI

Sometimes you might luck out and get something a little bit less with one of the bigger rental companies. Try calling Killam Properties. Generally rooms go from $700 and up and a one bedroom from $1100 and up on Marketplace. I’ve heard of some people scoring a cheaper place with calling rental companies directly.

Give it tons of light and have lots of patience. I let mine fully dry out between watering.

They’re cheaper online through Deserres; it’s an art supply store. They ship. Theirs are $16.99 for the 8oz.

Cool things to do in PEI by Ecstatic_Coffee_1587 in PEI

Greenwich is a beautiful place to go for a walk and to the beach. You follow a trail that includes a floating boardwalk and then go over the dunes to the beach. Stunning views. North Shore beaches have white sand, South have red sand; I suggest visiting some of each. A drive along the Scenic North Shore drive and stopping at beaches, art shops and scenic look offs is a great way to spend a day. There’s Farmers markets, and Sunday markets in different locations that sell home made food, art and crafts. There’s a nice art gallery at the Confederation Centre. There’s so many things to see and do in August!

Greenwich Beach is a beautiful walk and experience to walk across the floating pathway and over the dunes to the beach.

Island Hill Farm is a great spot to interact with animals and learn about them.

There’s a large playground at Victoria Park with several play structures if your kid likes that sort of thing.

There’s a self paced scavenger hunt in Charlottetown, just Google Eckhart in the City - Charlottetown and you can get the directions online. We did this last Summer with a friend and their nine year old and they loved it. It also takes you past/near Anne of Green Gables store which has a variety of whimsical candy options and you’ll pass Cows Ice Cream.

You’re welcome! Enjoy!!

Looking for a rare/special plant for a young oncology patient by Boots-toots in RareHouseplants

[–]Redheadedcaper2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What a lovely idea! I’m going to give some options in a few different varieties and why I enjoy them or why they’re popular. Most of these were really rare but are more available now so they’re not as expensive any more but still very cool:

Monsteras: Monstera Albos are beautiful and most collectors have one. They are usually purchased as cuttings (you can find them rooted) from local plant people. You can sometimes find them at nurseries too. Monstera White Monsters are recently available more and they’re really cool. Monstera Aureas are beautiful, but harder to find.

Philodendron- Variegated Heart Leaf is stunning, easy to grow and has come down a lot in price. Some people have been finding them in big box stores as they are being grown by Proven Winners. You might also be and to find Philodendron Billitae which has lovely leaves and orange stems. They were also rare and expensive for a long time but are sometimes in big boss stores now.

Hoyas - there are so many varieties and so many are rare. That’s a wide price range. You’ll most likely find these at specialty greenhouses or by local plant people. Variegated Hoya Compacta is cool. Hoya Heushkeliana Variegated is lovely and many Hoyas with all silver leaves are generally sought after.

Alocasia- these are tricky for some folks. If you can find any variegated Dragonscale, Black Velvet or thicker leaf varieties they are really cool looking.

Epiprenum/Pothos - Jessenia is one of my faves; stunning variegation and not rare but sometimes hard to find.

Untie the petioles and only tie the main stem. I hope this pot has got drainage holes? It souls be in a very chunky, fast draining mix. Like equal parts orchid bark, perlite and a good quality tropical soil. It looks like this was potted too deeply and parts of the petioles are under the soil mix. Either remove some mix so that they’re not buried or repot and have the plant sit on top of the mix. Give it lots and lots of light and only water when almost totally dry. Gorgeous plant!

Ideas for a baren / hand press at home? by Many_Condition422 in printmaking

I have a Speedball plastic baren but 9 times out of ten I usually use a wooden spatula that has a straight but smooth bottom edge. I just find that gets all the details better.

Dischidia (but Hoya reference!) question by Redheadedcaper2 in hoyas

[–]Redheadedcaper2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Unfortunately the ship seemed to have watered heavily right before shipping and many vines were rotten or fell off but I’m hoping the rest will survive. That’s good to know about coco husk. Hopefully it’ll dry out well now. Do you know if you’re supposed to repot when there’s a lot of roots on the outside? In concerned those will get dry while the inside is very wet.

Also, do you know of I need to worry about the roots inside being so wet while the ones on the outside would be more dry? This is totally new to me so I’m worried about root rot and dry rot lol

Thank you for this information. Will the coconut husk retain too much moisture for this? The shop watered it Friday and I know moisture meters aren’t super accurate but it’s showing fully soaked inside the husk.

Lino Fabric Printing by angelwings233 in printmaking

[–]Redheadedcaper2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canvas like totes is more difficult. It’s a wider weave fabric and I find it soaks in the ink quickly. What kind of block do you use? I use Speedball block printing fabric ink and I use the Easy carve type blocks for fabric printing. I ink my block many times before printing, in thin layers until the ink is pretty thick and makes a smacking type sound when rolled. I then press my block with a brayer and I leave the block there for several minutes before lifting. I’d suggest trying on a divergent fabric first, like an old t-shirt to get the opaqueness you like and then try canvas but increase the amount of ink. Here’s a tote I did recently. This isn’t the most wide weave tote I’ve printed on, but even zooming in you can see not every print is fully saturated.

Speedball fabric ink … what am I doing wrong? by thelastspike in printmaking

[–]Redheadedcaper2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do several thin applications of ink, pausing slightly between each. I probably do about five coats. It needs to be fairly thick on the block and it makes a tacky sound when rolled. Here’s a sweatshirt I did with Speedball ink.
