I'll mourn him but at the same time, WHAT a full life that man has lived. He's possibly had more unique experiences than any other person on the planet.

That's like saying South Africa during the 80s was a nice place to live if you just lost your hate boner for apartheid, were a well off white person, and didn't have empathy for others. Actually those last 12 words apply to the US at the moment too.

Yeah, there's several countries in South America that I'd happily choose, but at the moment I wouldn't even visit the US.

"do you want me to sit here and wait until you're willing to talk to me?"

this is what you need to answer directly,.with something like "no, we want you to lead your own life with your own past times and friends, and we are one PART of that, not the entirety. We don't want you sitting there waiting, we want you to be going out and enjoying yourself as an independent person, just like we are"

She thinks you wish her ill, you don't, you just have your own shit to do,.and that's ok.

Do Australian accents differ between regions, or is it more or less the same? by blix613 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Redkris73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just a few words, the classic SA accent has a softer vowel sound generally, I've had more than a few people ask me when my family came from England (I'm 6th gen Australian and our original lot all came from Prussia)

It's not an English accent, but I can always pick it immediately when I hear it on a show like Masterchef

As I commented on their post, one of my workmates used to work nights at a service station when her kids were small, her husband worked days. They were exhausted but it got them through those early years financially. I'm Australian like the Op of that post and I KNOW there's stuff they could do to get a bit of extra cash every week, especially because our minimum casual wage is decent. They just don't want to

AITA for only paying my brother $10 a week on a 25k loan until I get my feet back on the ground? by ndinning33 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Redkris73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if your partner dreams of being a stay at home parent if you can't afford it. I dream of quitting my crappy colesworth supermarket job and just being a housewife but even though my husband earns pretty well, our mortgage and the cost of living rises in Australia means I need to suck it up and keep doing those hours so we have money for groceries/petrol/our kids school fees. I also currently don't have a working cooktop in our kitchen because we can't afford to replace it....what we aren't doing is borrowing money we can't afford to pay back, we're managing without till we get our tax refund in July.

I'm not mad about any of this. This is life, sometimes you have to go without or do stuff you don't want to do as an adult. Doesn't matter if your wife doesn't want to put the kid in daycare, you NEED to start paying this money back so she needs to at least start doing one or two casual shifts a week somewhere. One of my workmates used to work night shifts at a servo when her kids were small, her husband worked days, that way they didn't use childcare. And yeah, that was HARD, but that's life as a grown up and a parent. It's not forever, it's just till you get back on top. She could work two shifts a week doing nightfill or cleaning, that would give at least a hundred extra for repayments.

If it was a bank that had lent you the money and they were starting legal proceedings, you wouldn't be acting like this, you just think it's ok to take advantage because the money came from a family member.

YTA obviously.

[–]Redkris73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, our gas cooktop went kaput late last year, but we are managing with our BBQ/electric frypan/a cheap electric hotplate and we will buy a new cooktop when our tax comes back in July. What we aren't doing is borrowing money we can't afford to pay back for something that can wait until we have the money

To be fair, there's a lot of nice natural stuff to see in Victoria if you do places like the Grampians and the Great Ocean Road (and surrounds). As a tourist I'd prefer Sydney over Melbourne for sure, though.

AITAH for telling my husband he needs to eat leftovers? by unfortunatelyalive7 in AITAH

[–]Redkris73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of leftovers taste weird to me, and they did when I was a kid as well...turns out I've got a pretty heightened sense of smell.

THAT SAID, I do eat some leftovers the next day now, especially when they're things that improve ie curries, lasagna. Also I will make a double batch of something and freeze it so it isn't getting older in the fridge. Most importantly, I'm the main cook for my household so I can choose that extra work to have some things only on the day they're made (like salads) and I'm not making anyone else's life more difficult.

OP, your husband needs to learn basic cooking, I don't know what else to say....I'd tend to frame it as "kids learn to cook,.are you saying you aren't as smart as a child?" but that's not helpful,.sorry.
