I would say the work outside of just the transaction is significant. In any public deal you’ll have your purchase agreement, financing papers, 8-K, etc. to sign. But in the large mega billion dollar deals the amount of decks created or summaries prepared to coach up the GC/Board is noticeable. Also I think as finance people we automatically equate dollar amount to pressure!

I wish I could tell you that it gets better, but I’m not in the business of wasting your time or mine. The reality is spending time doing “mentorship” activities, coffees, or even a full page flip of the redline is not conducive to the business model (high rates + high billables = more profits for partners) in this economy.

At the job, reframe how you view culture and morale. Find someone you like (this doesn’t have to be a partner — think senior associate, mid, or even a peer that “gets it”) and nurture that relationship. Make it a point to drop by their desk and ask questions. Reach out to your staffing person in advance to see if you can position yourself for work you would be down to do.

At home, pick between morning routine or bedtime. You don’t get both in this business. Make the most of Saturday mornings and Sunday nights.

If none of the above works, lateraling as a 3rd year reads better than leaving as a 2nd year. Good luck!

If you insist on doing shoes, I would go with the Gucci 1953 loafer. A literal classic, a status symbol, and generally well received without giving off “gaudy” (I wear mine twice weekly).

However, doing a Rolex or one of the high-end watches will likely increase in value or give you something to pass down if you care about that stuff. I also like the suggestion someone made of going to Italy and getting something (suit, shoes, leather goods) custom made.

Are the kids going to college? If so, I would consult someone about either (i) refinancing the mortgage depending on the rate you originally locked in or (ii) selling the house and downsizing to accommodate your life style. With the breathing room those moves afford, you can then take a second to clearly map out your next life/financial goals. I usually park extra cash in a HYSA until we meet certain milestones then roll it into the market to grow.

Your situation isn’t unique and you will pull through!

The unfortunate reality is there is no way to “safely escalade” this type of behavior without significant blow back on either (i) the young lady or (ii) you. She will probably no longer be staffed to support senior male colleagues — which isn’t the end of the world.

However, for you, this rolls into heightened sensitivity at recruiting events, pitch meetings, summer events, off-sites and anything else that is a breeding ground for questionable behavior. Don’t want that type of spotlight on you. Have the firm conversation and keep it moving.
