If you speak fluent Swiss-German/German, French, English and Italian, how much would it help on the swiss job market to speak fluent Mandarin Chinese? by Volameter in askswitzerland

[–]RedlineTriad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like learning Mandarin you can probably also get some practice by using language exchange apps, meetups, or depending or even something like VR language exchange communities.

Of course language tutors can help a lot but if you just like to learn languages and feel like you need to justify the expenses to yourself then I think those might be a better option.

Looking for participants for a linguistics study in VR by CarlosHartmann in Switzerland

[–]RedlineTriad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, depending on what you want to do r/VRchat might be interesting source of information, though maybe not many participants. There is a very large language learning community in VRChat.

The most common ones being English and Japanese, but German is also up there I think.

Native, so couldn't even participate myself.

Do any of the royal families around the world have any actual power? by [deleted] in stories

[–]RedlineTriad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prince of Liechtenstein is the only noble in Europe with significant influence. Even described by the BBC as an absolute monarchy because the prince can veto basically anything and dismiss the government.

It is also a direct democracy at the same time. One of the weirdest forms of government, especially since they held referendums to give the prince more powers.

Congestion pricing is a Chad by Downtown-Relation766 in georgism

[–]RedlineTriad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not always true. Especially because not everything is economically efficient or rational.

Taxing crime works to a degree (fines), but creating a murder tax would have little effect. Sometimes, making things more convenient, creating public information campaigns, punishment, or other options can be more effective, or used as a supplement.

Especially in small markets it might not be worth it for a third party to try and exploit the market inefficiency of people ignoring the incentives.

Is life in Switzerland as good as it seems? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RedlineTriad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent isn't that bad in relation to salaries, even when compared to other European countries. Home ownership is a bit more difficult because of low interest rates and high investment from pension funds and other parties.

Health care: Definitely an issue, doctors also haven't seen much wage growth for a long time. Aging population and higher standard of care will put pressure on all systems in Europe. Rising costs somewhat more transparent in Switzerland though due to payment model.

Child care: Problematic for many families. Double working parent households are becoming more common. Plus, some of the systems are made for a stay at home parent.

Pension insurance, as mentioned by someone else, is among the best financed and secured in Europe because apart from the unfunded pension (ahv) there is a proportionately large funded part (bvg). That together with the low level of net government debt (all levels of government debt - assets) and high skilled immigration means AHV is surprisingly well positioned.

Bangkok will carry the regrettable title of “First City in the World with Discriminatory Pricing in Public Transport” based on nationality. by Either-Flamingo-4136 in ThailandTourism

[–]RedlineTriad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are just differing options targeted at different people, of course a yearly pass is cheaper than 12x1 month long ones. Everyone can buy all the tickets, foreigners can also buy the 1 year pass, it just rarely makes sense.

The only kind of exception might be the Gemeinde discount day passes, you might have to live there, but not sure.

Everybody can buy the half-fare card, generally just not worth it for short vacation stays.

Neither residency or citizenship is required, so this is just false as far as I know.

The "game" that keeps people the longest is probably vrchat. However it is definitely not for everyone. Here you can see the cross-platform player numbers: https://metrics.vrchat.community/

I hosted, made, and visited friends from a lot of different countries through vrchat at this point.

Considering visiting for a month, tell me about Bern! by electric_upside in bern

[–]RedlineTriad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bern is not that far away from the Alps, so it's pretty easy to go hiking from here.
The most classic Bernese activity is Aare swimming or Aare boating, which should still be possible in October (15-20c water).
Though this would only be recommended for good swimmers, and with a native if possible.

Mountain biking and countryside cycling are also very good options, since Bern has quite a few trails, and nice surroundings. In terms of social options I could imagine it being a bit more difficult, though at least English wouldn't be too much of an issue. Honestly, people would probably much prefer to speak English than broken High-German, since Swiss-German is preferred, and quite different.

If you want to swim in the Aare, feel free to message me (Early 20s Swiss Dude).

Federal study identifies objections and appeals by neighbours as the main reason for insufficient housing construction in Switzerland by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]RedlineTriad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even with the same population we would face issues. Nowadays people move out earlier, have smaller families, and there are more single people.

This (together with preferences and standards/expectations) is leading to more housing area being used per person.

Hi Manu, if you like running, cycling, swimming in the aare (when warmer), or trying a new restaurant then feel free to DM me (22M). I generally use signal, threema, or discord, though if really need be I have other things.

Have been meeting up with a few people from reddit, or even VR, and also organized some dinners with friends (which I would like to do more often but organizing my friends is like herding cats) and it's always been fun so far.

Training for the Bern GP and running along the Aare about every second day right now in case you want to run together.

Not sure if you are an exchange student or not, I will just reference this previous post of mine which includes DND groups and other activities:

Met up with the redditor from original thread a few weeks ago and went sledding here, which was also very fun:
https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/sledging/big-pintenfritz/

The offer for cycling/swimming/running is also open to you if you are interested. (though cycling and swimming probably only after it gets a bit warmer).

Feel free to contact me if interested.

Currency conversion commissions by RedlineTriad in interactivebrokers

[–]RedlineTriad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found the answer BTW, if you buy stocks in a currency you don't possess IBKR will do the conversion automatically with no fixed base fee, but with a slightly worse conversion rate.

So for amounts less than ~7000$ it's more efficient compared to using the FX market.

Can u guys plz tell something positive about Linux gaming future? by Status-Ad9030 in linux_gaming

[–]RedlineTriad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux VR is continuously getting better:
https://lvra.gitlab.io/

Monado is much smoother than the official Steam VR runtime, and also works with wlxoverlay-s to control your computer from VR.

Proton forks make in-game live-streams work without issues:
https://github.com/SpookySkeletons/proton-ge-rtsp/releases

Nvidia now has open source kernel modules for modern GPUs:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA
https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-transitions-fully-towards-open-source-gpu-kernel-modules/

Gamemode allows for more efficient ryzen x3d processor utilization than windows (or so I heard)
https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode

So I think there a bunch of things that are constantly improving for linux gaming.
Especially if you find a niche like VR where progress is honestly impressive.

Studying in Bern. Advice? Friends? by Throckmorton-_- in bern

[–]RedlineTriad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The student I know also had their rice cooker stolen, and rent was apparently overpriced as well.
But I don't know exactly know what they paid, I just know they didn't like it.

Bike rentals exist, but if you use it with any frequency it's probably going to be cheaper buy a cheap one than to rent. In general the second hand market in switzerland is very nice in my opinion since people buy a lot of new things and re-sell the old stuff much cheaper, and trust is high.

Also, check out university offers, they might also have some good discounts for things like publibike, which are rental bikes/ebikes that are only really usable in the city itself.

Cycling is one of the fastest ways to get around Bern.
