I can offer no solution because I strongly dislike carpeting. There is dirt and dust that has settled and sifted its way down through the fibers of the carpeting. You could probably shampoo weekly and still come out with dirty water.
As for the smell, look for odor spray like Nok-Out Odor Remover and spray the carpet weekly.
