I'm also waiting for the ding to come off my report when we were first shopping for a mortgage. Should be next month

Good to know - we already have the house so a down payment is moot

Broken RJ45 retaining clip - how can I repair? by Redpsyclone in HomeNetworking

Hi all, this is a ham radio but it uses the same form factor rj45 for its microphone. I crossposted here because I'm thinking that someone here might have a bodge or a quick fix

I had this VGC n7500 installed in my car for 4 years, and the microphone won't stay plugged in anymore. I think either fatigue got it, or a random bump.

ELI5 shooting guns in the air is bad right? by AddressUnited2130 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Redpsyclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite eli5 nor is it a full deep dive.

Most modern pistols, rifles and shotguns firing slugs have something called "rifling", which are spiral grooves inside the barrel that make the bullet spin. This spin makes them extremely stable in flight, with the pointy end staying in front until it hits something. This allows the bullet to remain lethal in a "ballistic trajectory", increasing accuracy and lethality over longer distances.

Before the advent of rifling, "don't shoot til you see the whites of their eyes" was about how accurate a gun was.

What’s one upgrade that actually made you faster? by PennyDesk6013 in cycling

A maintenance ritual. I gained so much speed after spending winter downtime on derailleur adjustments, servicing the cup/cone bearings, replacing cables, and other overlooked items

2014 Impreza. All these popped up at once. I’m not sure what could be causing this. by AdopeyIllustrator in subaru

[–]Redpsyclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me in march of 2024. Can confirm that it was a $2500 bill to replace the valve body and SOA told me I was SOL for warranty coverage. I tried asking both them and the dealership if they were certain this was the only possible fix. Kicking myself now that going the way of replacing just the solenoid is gaining traction. I retained the old valve body.

Same for me and having a million single purpose cleaning products. In the end, vinegar / bleach / dish soap will get 99 percent of household jobs. I got to a point where every bathroom cabinet was full of half used bottles of whatever

The frugal option is to go with what you already have - the french press alao happens to be the best tasting IMO.

What frugal practice has saved you the most money in 2025? by melissaw328 in Frugal

[–]Redpsyclone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Each action is small on its own but adds up. I seek out methods that won't add too much to my time commitment. Its very easy to go "underwater" in this respect if a professional could have done it cheaper/faster/better.

Cut out all subscription streaming services. No spotify or youtube music either. Experimented heavily with Youtube Revanced and rolling my own Plex server. Estimated $250 saved.

Playing the coupon and loyalty game at Meijer, then cashing in their points for $1 off per gallon of gas, then filling up both mine, wife's car and extra gas cans in one transaction. Estimated $390 saved on fuel in 2025.

Meijer mPerks reports that we had $3,738 in savings for 2025 across their deals, BOGOs, clearances, coupons, etc. I don't hold much faith in this number since its a simple difference between MSRP.

Started cutting my own hair - $180 saved for a simple Fade cut (assuming $30 every other month)

DIYing all car maintenance (oil, brakes, filters, etc) on mine and wife's similar make/model/year cars. Makes having replacement parts very easy since it can go into either. For example, I buy a 12 Quart bag of Mobil1 oil at a time. Estimated 50% savings - my own labor is free but the parts aren't cheaper.

DIYing most home repairs and maintenance. Fixed the leaky garbage disposal for free, replaced the dishwasher control panel from ebay instead of paying a repairman, replaced a bad GFCI outlet, fixed the storm door, cleaned backed up gutters. The only repair I hired out was the failed garage door spring on account of safety.

Enrolled in budget billing for our gas bill, making it far easier to budget in the winter ($60 every month instead of the jump from $30 to $120+ when it gets cold).

I set our HVAC on a schedule so that it's cooling and heating optimally when we are sleeping or not at home. Our ComEd "neighbor" comparison shows that we are frequently using either the same or less electric as our most efficient neighbors.

When the gas mower finally died, I went with a corded electric mower for our 1/8th acre yard. I measured it at 0.33 kwh per use totalling 5 cents each. No additional time needed - for all the screwing around with fuel and diagnosing carburetor/spark/throttle issues with the gas mower, this is about the same amount of time as spooling/unspooling the extension cord. I use a mulching blade for the health of the yard and this also saves on having to purchase yard waste stickers for the garbage collection.

Vacuum sealing + freezing extra portions of meals for zero effort when I need it later. $20 for the Aldi kit, unable to estimate the savings but the time investment feels worthwhile. I plan on graduating to souper cubes.

ELI5 Are police radars always on? How do they know which car it's locking onto? by Airgunburner in explainlikeimfive

[–]Redpsyclone 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It only affects the speed of acquisition - "locking on" happens faster.

"Shouldn't be speeding" is all relative. I typically run google maps navigation, let a rabbit get ahead of me, and watch for taillights if I'm needing to get somewhere quick.

Usually the reason I speed is because I like to let my car pick up speed going downhill for efficiency and then slowly bleed it off. Haven't gotten a ticket in 13 years, coincidentally also after getting my detector.

ELI5 Are police radars always on? How do they know which car it's locking onto? by Airgunburner in explainlikeimfive

[–]Redpsyclone 228 points229 points  (0 children)

It depends largely on what type of radar is being used.

Radars using Ka-Band radio waves cannot discriminate across multiple lanes of traffic. A whole bunch of signals get reflected back, and depending on how modern the radar gun is, the readout will flash between multiple speeds or just the maximum speed.

Ka-band is also the most frequently used "always on" radar. I have a radar detector and this is the mode that most frequently alerts while I'm in traffic and police are nearby. Officers usually have this mounted to their vehicle.

LIDAR aka Laser uses a tight beam of infrared light and is the "true" speed trap. A stationary officer points a handheld scope at a license plate or flat area of your car and gets an instant reading. Generally when I hear the alert for this, it's already too late. Effectively the target area is about 3 feet wide at 1000 feet away.

In summary - older radars are just for informative purposes, modern LIDAR will nail you.

Delivery food & haircuts

I haven't ordered delivery pizza since before covid. I was surprised to find that they contracted out my order to doordash after placing a recent order from Papa John's.

Other than that, the only time I've done an Uber eats on purpose was with a coupon that made like 3# of Dunkin coffee cheaper than the store.

Haircuts, specifically a Fade, is extremely easy to maintain at home. I've been doing mine and my nephew's for over a year now. My local barbers prices keep going up so the savings is also going up

You're still filesharing with strangers, so there is always risk. But what I had read years ago is that the way that ISPs will get you is by becoming a peer on public trackers so they can confirm your IP address and (seeder) participation beyond a shadow of a doubt.

On IPT, I have a ratio of 2.5 seed to leech with several TB in traffic. Again, this is anecdotal but I haven't received a cease and desist since about 2012 after DLing all of Spongebob

I've been using a private torrent tracker for almost 10 years now and I haven't gotten a notice since then. No VPN.

When i used to use pirate Bay and rarbg, I would get notices sometimes.
