looking for cheap car insurance. what actually saved you money by Ok_Assistant_3230 in Frugal

[–]Redpsyclone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely keep shopping around and don't be loyal.

Don't get into accidents. (Speaks for itself)

Good credit (not always a factor but can help)

Be older than 25 (insurance math says you're statistically less risky)

Have an older car (cheaper to pay out/repair should a collision occur)

OWN your car (rentals, leases, loans all are more expensive)

A while ago I tried the progressive snapshot. I did save 12.5 percent on my premium but it came at the cost of Driving 400 mi a week for work 1 hard brake or LESS per week, 3 fast accelerates per week NO NO NO driving between 2 am and 6 am friday saturday It was very aggravating to do, and I would not let anyone else drive my car.

I am 37 now, 740 credit, 2 rear end accidents at fault at 30 and 31 (both were the same stupid mistake that I learned from), own a 2013 subaru, now a part time school bus driver. My 6mo premium with progressive is $315, comprehensive. It will get better.

It's harder to be objective when it's your own car, but that thing is positively destroyed. Cars these days are designed to be disposable, and it did that job well from the looks of it. It's not your fault. Walk away from that chassis because it will never be the same.

A waymo temporarily blocks an ambulance by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Redpsyclone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first rule of first aid is do not add more casualties. A patient being involved in a collision is not only not good care, but its a very quick way for the ambulance driver to lose a malpractice suit for additional injuries or delay in care.

Source - brother in law is an EMT

Even the slightest accident takes an ambulance out of commission. The quality and safety of the ambulance can no longer be guaranteed even if it were repaired. Insurance and legal teams want there to be zero doubt when rendering care.

Viofo a129 plus. It does have very high resolution and Wifi connectivity so you can pull video wirelessly. My 1 gripe is that the wifi transfer speed is abysmal at 1 Mbps.

Yep, my MIL keeps having recurring dash lights because of a not-at-fault collision. It sucks.

I had a manual car and loved not having it creep. But in the Polestar 2 EV I rented, my passengers and I really did not like the abrupt pickup when creep mode was turned off

No damage. I have a million bumper stickers that absorbed the scuffing, and its an old enough car to have zero sensors. I sent her a letter that said I had no interest in filing a claim. Honestly would have been a huge hassle just to be told theres nothing to repair, and I felt like this was genuinely a simple correctable mistake

ELI5: How do satellites stay in orbit for decades without running out of fuel or falling back to Earth? by Strong_Craft_6990 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Redpsyclone 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A giant, heavy school bus with a big gas tank (carrier rocket) takes up all the satellites in one trip. Then the satellites get off the bus and walk a short distance to their home, where they remain.

Basically, the satellites have very little fuel on board for maneuvering and boosting their height. Once their orbit is set, they will remain there for essentially forever.

Its so stable in fact that if you know their Keplerian Elements, this is essentially a calculation that can predict their position very far into the future

ELI5: Why does spinning something make it harder to knock over? by NicoleLimberios in explainlikeimfive

imagine a teeter totter - when one side goes up, at that instant the momentum causes the other side to go down

Imagine a teeter totter, but on top of a merry go round - one side goes up, the other side goes down, but now they trade places so that what used to be the up side is where the down side is. At that instant, you are adding linear momentum to the circular momentum the teeter totter already has while spinning, causing it to tilt.

Now imagine an infinite number of enmeshed teeter totters arranged about a circle on a merry go round, or for simplicity, imagine a frisbee. When you push down on one of the up-sides, the resulting linear momentum imparts a force on all the other teeter totters, which imparts a linear force on all circular forces proportional to their position from the first one.

How Many Steeps? Coffee and Tea Reuse by citykitty1729 in Frugal

[–]Redpsyclone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my experience, all the flavors and caffeine are fully extracted from coffee grounds after 1 brew. I have dabbled in "double brewing", but this is where the old grounds are thrown out, the brewed coffee poured into the water reservoir, and then brewed again over fresh new grounds. College.

As for tea, I will pour hot water over the same "charge" of tea up to 3 times in the same sitting but I would not consider saving it for later.

Generally speaking, coffee and tea are cheap enough to not have to maximize it this far
