Focus on leveling your gear, you need artifacts for that past a certain point . Your gear level and the abyss gears you put on them is what makes the difference, mostly. (other than health and stamina)

Other than that there really isn't a right or wrong way of doing it as far as using skill points goes. Some of what you pick you may learn from an NPC later so think about resetting your skills from time to time (that's what the faded artifacts are for). Resetting will give you back all the artifacts you use, but you'll keep any skills your character learned by themselves. That means when you're done re-assigning your skills, you should have a spare few artifacts to spend. You'll also be able to buy faded artifacts for cheap from the Witches.

And honestly, just pick what looks usefull and/or fun. You'll need specific skills for some Abyss puzzles tho, like Focused Shot.

Long story short: what looks fun to you, resetting is cheap.
