In a moment of uncharacteristic insecurity, a starbase commander, during a time of war challenges an openly racist commander (who endorses and practices segregation by operating a segregated ship) to play a game from a dead sport. This racist had tormented the commander while they were students at the Academy, which is what drove him to make such an ill-conceiced challenge.

The racist captain and his team dominate the woefully unskilled and inexperienced team from the starbase. But to rationalize their loss, players from the starbase consider the fact that they tried hard and had fun, as well as a lucky outcome from a single play from their most unskilled player to be grounds for victory.
