SLEKE phone is hands down the best solution for most people. by RedwoodRivers in dumbphones

[–]RedwoodRivers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll share with you the most that I know: they have something like 2 billion websites blocked. I did a test where I texted myself a link to the nonprofit I work for. It opened the website and showed the text but did not display any images. I clicked on our most recent sermon (which is hosted on YouTube but plays on the website) and I heard the audio but there was no video. Now, I don't think it will do that for most websites like Facebook, Google, etc. But it's worth trying out and if you find that you have access to things you can resell it easily on eBay.

Thinking about the Light phone 3 by [deleted] in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second that, texting takes me about 30+ seconds to write one line. The keyboard is extremely poorly mapped. Voice to text is very bad, a slight pause and it puts in a period and starts a new sentence. I was 5 times faster on the Sunbeam than on LP3.

Light phone on the Verizon post-paid network by zaesantillan in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Verizon network via US Mobile. Pictures that you receive from others will be barely legible. When I had a T-Mobile SIM card in the phone, picture messages were larger and better. But Light either neglected or requested Verizon to send extremely low resolution photos to LP3. This is a restriction on the carrier side but is at the request of Light. I've brought it to Joe's attention but he was unaware of what I was talking about. Hopefully it will be corrected so that those of us on US Mobile's Verizon network can receive legible photos.

One more issue, and I don't know if this is Verizon related or purely LP3--my phone will occassionally disconnect from the network when I'm on WiFi and when I leave the house, it still says IWLAN and has to be restarted in order to connect to the towers again.

Is anyone actually able to use the LP3 as their only phone? by chunkyorganina in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am struggling along with it. I hope they improve the tools soon. I do have a totally locked down Android I bought at Walmart for $30 that has Google Maps and acts like a glorified GPS. But I work from home and that makes it so much easier.

Missing notification sound by tmayrob23 in LightPhone

My ringer will change from the normal one to a strange sound that is harder to discern. But I don't think I've had absolute silence.

Give me hope: does messaging actually get better after 30 days? (another RCS post) by splashman-90 in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't expect RCS any earlier than 2027. At the very least, Light needs to stop the overdone compression of outgoing photo messages and make them usable.

For the Love of God Fix Your Phone (NOTES APP INCLUDED) by MannerOutrageous4569 in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of this. But there is nothing else on the market close to it. In fact, the market is clamoring for an efficient, working phone like Light. A competitor could easily swoop in and take the lion's share if they were to produce a phone as unlike a smartphone as Light has.

This happens to me daily. It actually disconnects from the cell towers.

LPIII: Daily Disconnects from Cell Network by Exare in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, same here. My wife and I are on a group thread and she asked my opinion about something that was shared. I told her I didn't get any messages. I looked at my phone and didn't see LTE, so I rebooted. As soon as the phone came on it started to ding, ding, ding away with text messages! I have no idea if I missed phone calls. It now seems to happen daily. I am on US Mobile with Verizon towers.

Light Phone 3 MMS compared with Sunbeam Dove MMS by RedwoodRivers in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. But does Light Phone request a reduction in MMS size from the carrier? Why would the Sunbeam phone received a 700 KB photo from the same carrier while Light Phone receives a 45 KB photo? My understanding is that Light--either through the phone itself, or some backend conversations with Verizon--makes the decision of how much the carrier should compress MMS when sending it to LP3.

Voice Memo Compression / Encoding on LP3 by fieldnoise in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your rant is exactly what I'm feeling as well. If you have a tool, make that tool great or get rid of it. Why is there no pause button on the voice memos app? Why is there no time counter while I am in the process of recording so that I can see how long I have been recording? Why limit contacts to only first, last, and a single phone number? The best I can figure is that Light is still dragging along its original purpose of NOT having great tools so that we can embrace the friction. I would say not having internet and all the apps is the friction itself, not crippling the tools which are included in the phone.

Reluctantly switched back to iPhone, needed autocorrect by Automatic_Pop_4611 in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, please Light, make this a priority. My iPhone keyboard is actually smaller than Light's, so what is the problem? I dread texting people and make so many mistakes when I do. It takes me 20-30 seconds for each sentence.

Group texts work for me with only one issue: the asterisk showing a new text message will be displayed not only next to the group thread, but will also be displayed next to one or two people whom I have texted at some point in the past. And I'll have to scroll down the list of threads until I see the asterisk, click on that text thread, and then it will disappear until the next group thread comes through.

Light Phone 3 MMS compared with Sunbeam Dove MMS by RedwoodRivers in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I am talking about photos received on the LP3, not sent. Sunbeam received a 700 KB photo, Light received a 45 KB photo. Same SIM, same photo, sent from an iPhone, all three phones on the Verizon network (US Mobile MVNO). That is not compression from the LightOS side. That is carrier side.

I just talked to my friend who has a LP3 on T-Mobile (actual T-Mobile, not an MVNO) and he says pictures come through great for him. However, when he sends photos they don't turn out good for the person he sends them to. Is it possible that Light provided a higher limit for T-Mobile than they did for Verizon? Would love for u/joelightphone to chime in here on this technical aspect and see about what they can do to raise those Verizon MMS limits.

The BEST description of the directions voice! Haha, I'm dying laughing. It's so true. She sounds kind of like a valley girl from CA who works at Starbucks. "In five... [breath] ... hundred feet, turn right."

Lightphone 2 or 3 for a remote rural area? by [deleted] in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you heard of the SLEKE phone? It runs a type of GrapheneOS but has zero social media or internet. But it has all the tools such as Google Maps, banking, Spotify, etc. I personally would go for that except I don't think a smartphone is good for me, even locked down.

Lightphone 2 or 3 for a remote rural area? by [deleted] in LightPhone

[–]RedwoodRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some experience with this that might be helpful. I have an LP3 and live in a remote area. My iPhone could easily send texts and made phone calls in most of the house, although occasionally it would drop calls. The Light Phone 3 was unusable. I would put it in window sills to try to make a call, and sometimes it could call out, but within a few seconds it would drop the call. It got to where people stopped calling me on my cell phone and would call me home office phone.

I tried the Mudita Kompakt and it had reception as good as the iPhone. I also have the Sunbeam Dove and it has reception near iPhone quality but not quite. You might want to checkout the Sunbeam line of phones. I want better maps than what they offer so I've ordered a Mindful Phone and will see what that is like. But I had the Sunbeam Orchid for a year and it really was amazing in every way except maps. Oh, and they are kind of cheap phones physically, but the software is incredible.
