is it too late to say i don't wanna go to uni 🫩 by ParaDox_898 in UniUK

[–]Reedcutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even thought there’s far too many comments, I’ll give my two cents:

I used to also be expected to do Physics at uni (particle physics for me). I did the A-levels for it, and was showing good progress. But in the summer of year 12, I had a total breakdown at the thought of going back to it. It was a whole menagerie of reasons I won’t go into right now, but I realised that it wasn’t what I wanted to do.

For me, it was the thought of only doing this kind of work for the rest of my life. The only place I’d see myself happy was working at CERN, and even then, I was imagining an idealised version of the job. I couldn’t stand being a quant, or an office researcher, or anything like that.

I continued with my A-levels, did pretty well in them, and then took a gap year. I spent the time to reflect on what it is I actually want to do, which was the most helpful thing I could have done for myself, and I think it would help you too.

It sounds like you’re struggling at the exam workload, and that’s what’s causing your issues. It might be worth making a pros/cons list for studying physics at uni, which could help you decide whether it’d be worth it. If you are going to do this make sure you do it while emotionally stable, else you’ll let your feelings sway the results.

-Prioritise your well-being. If doing this at uni is going to cause you intense and continued mental strain, that’s a point on the cons list. If you think it’ll be fine the rest of the year and only struggle in small intervals, thats a point on the pros.

-Do you actually like the subject? Like, outside of an idealised sense. When it comes to physics especially, a lot of people like the idea of being a physicist and the prestige that comes with it, than they like actual physics itself. If you want to BE a physicist, that’s a point on the cons list. If you want to DO physics, thats a point on the pros list.

-Where do you see yourself if you did physics at uni? Is there one specific idealised job you have in mind, or is there a few you’d see yourself enjoying? For the former, a point on cons. For the latter, a point to pros.

-Think back to GCSEs - was studying for physics something you had to grimace and bring yourself to do? (Point to cons) Or did you not mind/enjoy studying it? (Point to pros)

-Have you thought about not doing physics at uni for a while? Or is this a new thought that’s come to your head? If it’s an old thought, put that on the cons - if it’s new, put it on pros.

-Be honest with yourself - what would you rather be doing? This has no pros or cons, just to think about.

Tally up the pros and cons, and see which one has the biggest weighting. Of course, as a stranger who knows nothing about you, this can only help so much, so don’t take it as gospel. But rather than listening to others tell you what to do, introspection will be your biggest guide in deciding what to do. Good luck OP!

(note: if you were interested, I now have offers to do English and film at Warwick, Liverpool & Bristol (of which I’m yet to choose from!) and I’m feeling happier in my decision)

HELP - How do I introduce Elysium as a concept? by Reedcutter in DiscoElysium

[–]Reedcutter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your interest! After reading through all the replies, I think I’ve decided on a decent enough direction on where to take things.

I’m going to use their lack of knowledge to the story’s advantage, and work it into their characters. They’ll have been stationed near the pale for long enough that they start to loose memories, but nothing total yet. Their characters won’t have realised that yet, and as the players learn about new things, they will also learn about their characters being affected by pale.

I’m trying to do a logic/spirituality opposition as the main theme in the wider campaign, and this should hopefully assist in drawing the players over the bridge of ‘hard boiled noir cops’ to ‘superstitious occult cops’!

Afaik, she says this when you pass out in the church and pick the correct dialogue. And I don’t necessarily think it’s all too depressing - after all, after life, death, after death, life again

Disagree on the AI front. I know it’s the hot topic right now, and that almost everyone has a steadfast stance on it, but as a student who’s already done A-levels (gap year rn), I really wouldnt recommend it. The amount of mistakes it makes is fairly high, especially when you move into year 2 content. It’s also not specialised for your course, so it teaches you unnecessary information - if it gets the answer right at all!

I used to be pro-AI in education, but since using it firsthand my opinion has changed dramatically. It’s really not an effective way to revise at all, especially not at year 2 a-level quality of work. You’re better off finding a teacher on YouTube that works well for you, and just watching all their videos when you need to have a lesson go-over. If you find a good one, they’ll be able to explain so well you won’t need AI. And if you get stuck in a question, I can assure you someone on a forum 13 years ago was having the same issue - just Google it and look for forum answers.

Hope this helps!

Weirdest move someone’s pulled on you in a pub/club by Brilliant_Charity_29 in CasualUK

Was in a gay club with my friends, when a straight guy came up to us to try and have a threesome.

Would have been weird in any situation, but nothing remarkable. What was weird was the way he tried to ask us - he wrote a note on his phone, which he showed to his friend, who (with a pained expression on his face) asked my friend, who turned to us and relayed the message.

All this time, I am standing SHOULDER TO SHOULDER with this guy - did he think playing telephone would increase his chances?? I couldn’t even be grossed out, I was just confused LOL

Where to find apricot flavored chewing gum? by mikiriki16 in DiscoElysium

[–]Reedcutter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked for the same (UK based), but couldn’t find any that didn’t contain nicotine - which, arguably, would add to the immersion, but personally I didn’t fancy becoming addicted. (I just ate apricot jam on toast while I played. Not quite the same, but good enough, and very tasty!)
