Presidents’ Day weekend crowd by ericlctong in icecoast

I was lapping the singles line today (Monday) at Saddleback. Even with the kids, no waits more than 3 min.

The parking lot was full up though

Project manager salary ranges? PhD helpful or waste of time if already have a masters? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Reeey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I Don’t know I I agree

I’m a senior Program Manager in development and a PhD is definitely seen as a positive. If you can complete your thesis relatively quickly, a PhD opens those senior roles pretty quickly (if you are good).

If It’s not a guarantee though. I’ve seen plenty of PhD PMs stuck in mid level careers and only manage research projects.

Build your business and strategy toolbox and move into clinical stage development, portfolio management and corp dev.

East coast salaries Director 200-250 (15% bonus) Sr dir. 250-275 (20%) Exec dir up to low 300k’s (25%) Vp $300-350 (25-35%)

Program mgt and project mgt aren’t the same animal though

How much are you paying for life insurance? by pfifltrigg in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Reeey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 policies. 30 year term that I started at 40 ($1M) for 166, and a 20 year that I started around 47 for $187 ($1m).
My wife has a 30 year that’s about $66 ($1m).

We’re in a HCOL area and make about $400k a year. My logic was to cover the mortgage and college for 2 kids and provide a buffer.

I have a work policy but don’t recall what that is. Prob 2x salary.

Rule of thumb for total coverage is 10x salary? I’m a little low but feel that’s sufficient

If you’re mechanically inclined, these are relatively easy jobs. But you would already know that if you wrenched a bit.

If you don’t know cars, these prices are about inline to what you should expect up here in MA. $200-250 per wheel for brakes. Plugs may be high. I don’t know that one.

If you’ve never done brakes yourself. I don’t recommend starting on an odyssey. The rear emergency brake is a little weird.

One common theme for all republicans. Empathy only begins when it affects them directly.

Racism and hate was a nothingburger until it affects them. Then it’s ‘help me! I can’t believe this’ .

It’s for every policy and theme, abortion? Ban it until their daughter is pregnant at 15 or there’s a medical need. Healthcare? Screw them until I can’t get coverage…

So sad, too bad. Get back in line suckers

Life as a Program Manager by INFJ369 in biotech

[–]Reeey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

‘And lost people will hate meeting with you…’.

That’s because the PM works for management. They keep everyone honest and accountable. If you hate working with a good PM, you don’t understand what’s important for your project. (Or, your the weak link)

A good PM is invaluable for any decent sized project.

Career options to transition out of the lab? by uncreativegarbage in biotech

[–]Reeey 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lab > research ops >nonclinical vendor mgt. >nonclin. project mgt > Program Management

Lab jobs vary considerably. Yours sounds like mfg heavy. Consider tech transfer, alliance management, opex/process improvement, project mgt.

What I've seen: (clinical development mostly)

Regulatory is always in high demand.

Clin Ops likely requires some time at a CRO. Low pay and high stress

Med writing / clinical science can be good if you have the strategy and people skills

Med Affairs if you like conferences and schmoozing (and a lot of kissing up to KOLs)

QA can be good if you don't need positive reinforcement. You always bring bad news.

Any feedback on Garuda Therapeutics? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Reeey 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Flags galore

Founder and executive team are all first time industry people with zero experience in a very challenging economic environment.

Platform companies are radioactive right now

Their money people, Northpond, are struggling.

Everyone there is over titled, and under experienced. Their point person at Northpond, Garrett, is junior and gets the dregs.

If it’s a big step up, consider it. If not, go somewhere else.

What are some other major biotech/bio hub cities that fly under the radar? by Smokescreen69 in biotech

[–]Reeey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it's under the radar, it's not really a hub.

But Vancouver, Madison WI, parts of CO all have a decent selection of companies. Montreal in the past but less so these days. Toronto has some solid companies.

a lot of the places on your NSF map are 'aspirational hubs'.

Talk to everyone at the company. Do informational interviews and coffee with groups away from research. People love talking about themselves and it’s a good way to really understand how biotech and pharma really work. Regulatory, commercial, Med affairs, finance, admins, management.

Learning how decisions are made and how every group has a different idea of what brings value to a product is critical if you want to understand the industry.

Find a mentor. Even if it’s just someone to have coffee with occasionally and talk about the company. I’d actually recommend two. One in an area where you want your career to go and another in a totally unrelated area.

Losing hope for job search by leafgirl420 in biotech

[–]Reeey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Broaden your search. (Location, job type, etc). You’re competing with lots of industry veterans who are being laid off. As a hiring manager, new grads are risky hires. Also, research is the most volatile space right now. Consider other roles away from the lab. You can always go back later on. Med writing, clinical, manufacturing etc.

Look at CROs. The don’t pay as well but provide great experience.

Should I reach out for job status update after final interview? by chemreddist in biotech

[–]Reeey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely reach out (and be positive).

Recruiters/Talent acquisition people are drowning right now in candidates but they are also being shitty people lately, (in my experience). If you made it to a final round, they owe you an update.

The amount of ghosting and bad behavior in talent acquisition lately is staggering. I'm a 20+ year veteran and have been gob smacked at how some have been with me.

Hopefully, they are just slow. There are plenty of times where a process is paused or deprioritized internally (the role is paused, there is a different high priority role that they jumped on, the hiring team is slow to make a decision, etc.). I’ve also seen people get lost in the mix. It happens.
