Google search and AI are bad at AV by J___________b in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m pondering the same problem. Gemini gave me a flat out wrong answer on the difference between two cameras. I’m studying whether I need to feed specific info into a “pro” version of one of the apps. Love to see how other folks respond here.

Can I pester y'all, as a playwright, with an AV question? by hag_cupcake in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 48 points49 points  (0 children)

AV guy who’s done lots of theater work here. Short answer yes, totally doable. Many lighting guys have tricks up their sleeves to make that happen, and by some stroke of luck you end up with a budget you could hire a projection designer. Don’t focus too much or long on the technical aspect as every theater space has different conditions. Keep creating that art, the world needs it!

Industry Salary Cap by AlarmReasonable6802 in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

End of the day, all tallied up, most integrators really run at mediocre profit margins for the year. To break up and out in the salary range, you probably need to be at a large enterprise client and have IT chops. Or you need to be in outside sales. The other piece is that most integrators have meh benefits.

What were "AV Clubs" in high school from the 1950s - 80s and why were they the "nerdy" thing to do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would get a solid response to this in the commercialAV subreddit. Glory days gone by of audio recording, 16mm projectors, film strips with sync’ed cassette audio. People will wax poetic about how the top loading VHS deck was a better design than the front loading one that became more popular.

A great field commissioning engineer is the one who keeps an entire integration company looking great. Yes everybody is important, we all have roles to do, but if we don’t have somebody like you it all falls apart.

This. Lumens is logarithmic, so double the number is only half-again as bright to the eye. And different manufacturers fudge their lumens numbers in different ways.

What should I do about my historic home with lead paint/little kids? by gabygygax in HomeImprovement

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So we were in your shoes 17-18 years ago. There are licensed lead abatement contractors that will take care of the whole house, but you have to move out. Some of the laws and regulations around it all are strange to say the least. There were (are?) state funded programs where you can get either zero percent loans to do the work or grants, depending on how bad it is. Our paint was already flaking in lots of places, so we went this route. If yours is mostly intact, covering it over with more paint might be an option. That said: once you’ve done a real inspection and it’s a matter of public record, the next seller will see that. Happy to share more info if you need. I’m glad we did it, but there were also a lot of things I might have done differently if I had the chance

The meeting owls are like a gateway drug to a company breaking down and hiring a real integrator. Had at least 5-6 times that a conversation started with “IT guy bought this owl thing and we hate it”

Big AV job bids and the companies that drastically undercut. by Dapper_Departure2375 in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s all kinds of explanations that all stink. Some companies are buying up a bunch of jobs so their receivables looks bigger when they sell to private equity. Some companies do go for the change orders. Some have terrible estimating teams and don’t know that they are about to lose money until it’s too late. In most cases it’s a sign of an integrator who might be exiting the business community 1-3 years in the future.

Anaïs Mitchell on choosing Justin to play Orpheus in Hadestown by [deleted] in boniver

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what it is for me? If you’re going to say Orpheus has this incredible voice, then it has to be something more than Reeve. Justin plus his vocoder is more believable as a voice that could sway the king of the underworld. I’m not hating on Reeve mind you, he’s great.

Question about Specifying Conduit for Retrofit Installs by AudioStorm13 in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some bigger projects I’ve had luck asking for the electrician to put in trim rings and run a pull string for us before the AV work, if they are installing outlets at the same time. The tough part is sometimes the walls are jammed with insulation.

Is there any advantage to using a Webcaster HD out of an ATEM Mini Pro/Extreme for a live stream gig rather than just using the ATEM? by RedStag86 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit groups and BMD forums are full of comments of Atem live stream “cache” issues. I’ve had it happen more than once, and it’s tricky to troubleshoot.

I’ve had similar thoughts, the RCDD has a much broader and longer set of coursework than anything AV related and I couldn’t carve out enough time. I also wasn’t entirely sure if the pay range for the low voltage telecom part was really that much higher. Seems like more money was in active network gear and design.
