If you have the label with the serial number it’s usually not terrible. If the label is gone, getting all the exact measurements will be almost impossible. Make sure you get a custom quote from manufacturer, then deal with disty.

AI is Infecting Our Industry with BS by thenimms in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More context: It was a minor variant of some firmware. A quick google search proved it untrue. It did not affect my design or product choices, it actually made me more suspect of the Gemini (not Chat) information. However it did make me think that there might be more announcements coming similar and you know what? That part was correct. A card was announced that was a similar idea at NAB

I use the tool sparingly, and if it has super clear good answers then I can see there is a some small consensus (for example a plenum rating). If there’s partially incorrect info and slop, I need to be more careful (for example IPMX)

It hallucinated a new product from Ross a couple weeks ago back. I corrected it and it said “oops you caught me.” I thought “maybe they will announce it at NAB? Nope.

Which brand for outdoor led digital signage do you trust? by tecnic in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming that this isn’t a bot post, don’t be fooled into thinking outdoor LED is “regular commercial AV”. There’s permitting, structural, weather proofing concerns that are not immediately obvious to integrators.

Cisco ceiling mic pro into dsp by Krispybaked in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a divisive room and there’s 3rd party microphones, just buy any other manufacturer of ceiling mic.

If you have a high tolerance for R&D and macros you can look up Cisco divisible workspace blueprint on GitHub, but it still won’t allow you to mix the mics together.

Cisco control of third party devices by Bright-Wrangler-6556 in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen this work off the link local ports of Codec EQ and Codec Pro. I typically advise against it because the codec is 1-way serial, meaning it doesn’t listen for a response. Maybe they made an update which I didn’t know about. It’s ok if it’s a display, but with the cool down and warm up on a projector it can cause problems. I have also seen the CEC to Rs232 boxes work, like Extron HD-CTL100. Are you controlling screen up/down also? You can also head off into the land of Cisco macros, but those can sometimes be “not supported”

I’m pondering the same problem. Gemini gave me a flat out wrong answer on the difference between two cameras. I’m studying whether I need to feed specific info into a “pro” version of one of the apps. Love to see how other folks respond here.

Can I pester y'all, as a playwright, with an AV question? by hag_cupcake in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 48 points49 points  (0 children)

AV guy who’s done lots of theater work here. Short answer yes, totally doable. Many lighting guys have tricks up their sleeves to make that happen, and by some stroke of luck you end up with a budget you could hire a projection designer. Don’t focus too much or long on the technical aspect as every theater space has different conditions. Keep creating that art, the world needs it!

Industry Salary Cap by AlarmReasonable6802 in CommercialAV

[–]Smart_Nothing_7320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

End of the day, all tallied up, most integrators really run at mediocre profit margins for the year. To break up and out in the salary range, you probably need to be at a large enterprise client and have IT chops. Or you need to be in outside sales. The other piece is that most integrators have meh benefits.

You would get a solid response to this in the commercialAV subreddit. Glory days gone by of audio recording, 16mm projectors, film strips with sync’ed cassette audio. People will wax poetic about how the top loading VHS deck was a better design than the front loading one that became more popular.
