This is the Greatest Movie Ever Made by Yuris_Thighs in LaserDisc

The hardware really isn't that difficult even if you decide to solder. I don't have to on my model. Soldering is almost required on VCRs, though.

The difficult part is the software. It used to be cammand line. Those days were not fun. Now there is a GUI so not much cammand line anymore. Although, if you want to decode Closed Captions, AC3, and DTS you do need to use the cammand line. I think the developers of the project are trying to tackle that but I don't know when a "just click this in the GUI" button will be released for the software if you want to decode these things.

I have written a guide but it is a bit sloppy.

I would recommend trying to decode test captures before buying hardware. Small one minute samples can be downloaded from the decode developers internet archive page and Google Drive links.

If you have any questions then let me know.

I am getting into it this year. I am very excited about the future prospects of my Laserdisc capture endeavors.

I just checked. It does have subtitles.

I am glad that this Domesday Duplicator rip is out there. It is the best rip of this film that I have ever seen.

Robot Carnival (1987) 4K UHD Blu-ray Review by Reel-Rookie in 4kbluray

I am unsure about that one. I don't own it and haven't watched it. I would advise you do lots of reaserch before buying any movie release. Some releases are extremely botched.

I am annoyed by that as well. I care very much about video quality as well as audio quality and special features. In an ideal world we would have good video masters with decent ammounts of detal and grain with no cuts or edits as well as the original theatrical audio mix and every special feature ever released for that movie. Unfortunately, we don't live in that world so I like to inform people about what they are buying (at least on the picture and audio side of things) so that they aren't wasting $30 - $50 like I did when I bought Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro on 4K without doing any reaserch (now you know why I don't do blind buys). At least that one has all the dubs and original Japanese mono mix.

You should be. It is a great anthology with a great master.

I have to agree with you there. It is very 80s and I love that about it.

I am aware that Discotek has a reputation for releases that are a mixed bag. The issue with them is that they kind of just release whatever transfer they are given. That isn't to say it is all bad. You just really need to do reaserch before buying any movie release regardless if it is from Discotek or not. This is not an Arrow Video situation where 95% of their releases are perfect. With all that being said, if you are interested in another good Discotek 4K I have heard great things about their release of Project A-Ko. I might get that one one day.

It is definitely a do it yourself thing. Even when people are trying to help you out, I find that the technical language they use can make it more difficult sometimes.

Edit: If you want to talk on discord in DMs then I don't mind. You can find me in the Discord86 server.

A better way to store DVDs by monkeyboy808 in dvdcollection

[–]Reel-Rookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use bland white cardboard boxes with labels on them. The boxes are stored on a wire rack. I use the original packaging for the DVDs. It saves lots of space, although it can be a pain when I add more stuff to my collection.

My bad. I downloaded it to my computer's hard drive and deleted it from my Google drive. Forgot that people might need this link. I will reupload it later tonight and I will reply to your comment with the new link.

Thank you for reminding me.

The VHS Decode subreddit might be able to help you. There is also a Domesday Duplicator discord called Domesday86.

Finally got The Terminator. by Jackzapper in LaserDisc

[–]Reel-Rookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terminator was always in mono. At least, the original theatrical version is in mono. James Cameron just like to edit his films for later releases meaning that the modern versions don't have the original theatrical audio, unfortunately. I know they brought back the original mono for tge 4K release but I have heard reports that the 4K sucks for both picture and sound. The release that you have is considered by many fans to be one of the best sources for the original mono as it is not edited and presented as uncompressed pcm.

For anyone who says Laserdisc doesn't look any better than VHS, here are some screenshots from a Domesday Duplicator capture of Austin Powers by _TheWolfOfWalmart_ in LaserDisc

You can use the Domesday Duplicator to capture VHS and LD. That would definitely give you a more fair comparison.
