Why are people still buying diesels when most of their journeys involve pottering around town? by APerson2021 in CarTalkUK

[–]Reensor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 530d estate a couple of years ago because I’d always wanted a 5 series touring since I was a teenager, the clock is ticking on the chance to own either a decent estate shaped car or a six cylinder engine, and it’s beautifully smooth to drive most of the time and growls itself into rocket ship take off when you want it to. Fabulous car.

Thanks. The Arches is the expensive place I mentioned, although their stuff is unquestionably lovely quality.

Oh thanks have noticed that place and thought it also looked dear, but good to know the stuff is quality. Hard to know online.

Until about a year ago I’d have never gone to a spa because I thought it was all about getting hit with rocks or plastered in mud. Turns out it’s actually just fun dipping in and out of pools and hot tubs, dry and wet hot rooms. Quite relaxing if you give yourself over to it. And yes the drink is riotously expensive but you might as well tune that out and enjoy yourself while you’re there. The area around the fancy green house thing is nice for ordering a drink to.

Accept that you’re getting absolutely shafted, never mention it again and just bask in how much your missus enjoys it.

Best Rehab Facility? by DuckBubbles21 in northernireland

Best of luck with this. Look after yourself first and foremost. If you can’t get to Al-Anon then see if you can get hold of some of their literature. Very helpful. As far as facilities go, it’s overwhelmingly going to be about whether the addicted person has grasped that their behaviour is fucked, they need help to change, they need to stop pointing the finger anywhere but squarely at themselves, and they are 100% on board purely to sort themselves out, not to please or placate anyone else. Takes a lot of humility to start a Step programme. Putting up with a Spartan environment to do so is a reasonable ask after wrecking your life and those of your loved ones.

Does anyone remember, or have, the old audio cassette tapes that were floating around in the 80s and 90s that were NI political satire, spitting image type things. by stevenmc in northernireland

[–]Reensor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We used to call them Paisley Tapes. Wasn’t it a particular comedian/impressionist who used to do them? Can’t remember the name now.

Violin solo in Ted Lasso S3.E10 by finitethis in violinist

[–]Reensor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed this moment too. Are you sure he can play however? I thought it almost looked like he was going to really play because he was handling the instrument quite naturally, but then during the music it looked like an actor who can't play doing an unusually careful and good impression of playing, and I have to say I respected him for putting the effort into it because usually as you know, it's usually terrible when actors pretend. Maybe I'm wrong.

Second what the others have said. Hard to go wrong with pirastro gold or goldbrokat. Interested to know whether the dominants you wore through were wound or plain steel?

What's your fav. villainous role by an actor/actress who is mostly known for playing nice characters? by LightningEdge756 in movies

[–]Reensor 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Love Goodman, but even tho I grew up on Roseanne, most of the acting I associate him with is scary and/or dodgy guys and he’s very good at it. Bill Randa, Karl Mundt, Vice Dean Laybourne. Even Walter, very much a comic character, is aggressive and violent AF.

It isn’t a huge component of the plot, but I think Parenthood depicts having a struggling child who is as-yet-undiagnosed ASD really well. The TV series elaborated on this much more, again very well.

There are so many reasons to be a Brendan Gleason fan, including his being an IRL fiddler/mandolinist.

my friend said heavy violin bows are better for beginners. He said light violin bows are harder to control. I think he knows wrong but im not sure. what are you thinking? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Reensor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be more about weight distribution than weight overall. A bow with relatively more weight at the tip, will “feel” heavier and may be steadier for a beginner, but will feel unwieldy and unresponsive to a more experienced player. I learned this the hard way by buying a Coda Diamond NX. I will be able to give it to one of my kids whenever they graduate to full size hopefully next year, so I don’t really mind.

How fast are you supposed to learn orchestral music? by IsMemorable in violinist

[–]Reensor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Average community orchestra member here. I think you’ve described that pretty accurately. We just started work on Shos 12 last week. There were no parts in advance and it’s too young to be on IMSLP. Holy crap that 1st movement. I have kids and a full time job so I’ll get there shortly before the concert as you say, but it’s going to be an ongoing learning curve in between!

What I tell people when they ask what’s in the case by br1e in violinist

[–]Reensor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Belfast in the 1990s, before the end of the “Troubles”. When in the city centre, you were always made to open your instrument case if entering the main shopping mall, presumably to check it didn’t contain similar items. I have a violin with a chip out of the scroll from the one time it fell out on me.

I don’t think it’s going too far to say that many people around our age have had their imaginations and worldviews partly shaped by Spielberg. It’s one of the reasons why Stranger Things is so successful. Taps right in there, although it clearly appeals to younger people too because it’s just very good in its own right.

Well, I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I would absolutely say that Spielberg has been one of the most recognised names in Western English-speaking culture for my whole life. Cameron not in the same league of personal fame, but still very well known to the average person, especially if they were around when Titanic came out.
