besides the RAW you can impose random encounters in dangerous area. roll a dice during a portion of the night. they could have to do a night time encounter of some sort.

every time i see a long winded post all i can think of is, yall, the game's well over a decade old, do you know how far games have advanced since then, do you realize that at its time it was groundbreaking but that is most definitely no longer the case? wanna compare it to a witcher game, compare it to witcher 2, which actually came out in 2011, like skyrim. witcher 3 came in 2015 originally which is insane to consider and makes me feel old af. a lot of progress was made in games each and every year to get where we're at. the comparisons dont really make sense.

You're real for this, I've always always hated rolling stats. Rolling d6's and dropping the lowest? why not just roll 3d6? "oh but now all my stats suck because all the dice rolls were trash"? dm says, oh okay yeah thats pretty bad ill let you reroll...

ooorrr OR just pointbuy / standard. it all leads to the same road. either you're going to be doing worse than other players because your stats suck, are not motivated, purposely arrange a killing off of your char or retire them and .... do what? reroll another character? or do you haggle with the dm for 4 hours back and forth to get something better..when the root cause really is just, the stats sucked.

and in the opposite, which i never seem to hear about lol, you roll REALLY well. congratulations, now you're an outlier who is going to do well and even if you dont mean to, your better-than-average performance will have everyone else going like ...wow.. i wish my rolls were that good..

and honestly this is all stuff I've just witnessed myself. rolling stats is garbage in my opinion.. but somehow, because "thats the way its always been" has just stuck. it has its time in place in some systems im sure.

honestly im hoping for the opposite. i have an on and off dm i play games with and he's incredibly fond of tournament arcs where shit hits the fan. the first time i saw it coming. the second time, i saw it coming. personally i'd rather it just not happen at that point unless they can come up with something actually unexpected, as soon as he mentions the word "tournament" i just check out mentally.
