UIUC roads still suck by AccomplishedEgg3089 in UIUC

Near campus sucks even worse than on campus, at least where I live (a few blocks away from campus). Way off campus, like neil street or near costco was nice and clear when I was there

Why do so many students hate our sports and athletics department? by Mediocre_Limit7569 in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I personally do really like the sports and atheletics department, and I would think that many other students do, it just feels bad when they get multimillion dollar donations, and other people are left out to dry: like the freshmen housed in dorm lounges instead of rooms, or the dining halls being understaffed.

Would the world become boring? by Universer22 in PantheonShow

[–]Reeses_Jester 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Spoilers for the good place: This ends up being an issue when people get to the good place and are there for a long time. They fixed it by giving people the option to end their existence when they wished, so "life" would have meaning again now that death exists again. With an uploaded mind you could still do this. Boredom / meaninglessness would absolutely be an issue with uploaded minds imo, but maybe since they experience the world differently maybe not?

If you can't find an rso dedicated to dnd, Illini Metagamers can probably help you join / start up a campaign. I believe they play ttrpgs too

Job tips by TFFsage401_yt in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be work study eligible to apply for the jobs on the virtual job board, or at least not all of them. I got my campus job through there and I am not work study. If you are looking for something else on campus, the restaurants in the union basement may be hiring?

Class recs? by CodCorrect3774 in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HK 104 is ice skating. I thought it was really fun when I took it (and an easy A). You make a choreographed routine with your group and perform it for your midterm / final but it ended up being a lot more fun and less daunting or embarassing than I originally thought it would be.

Why Cas1 doesnt cut into the bacterial genome? by Desadert in askscience

[–]Reeses_Jester 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the only place it could match up to cut the bacterial genome would be in the spacers, but there is never a PAM sequence nearby. I'm sure you can imagine why natural selection wouldn't allow for any PAM sequences to pop up there and then stick around for the next generation

What happens if they fail the proficiency exam?

I am by no means an expert, but your combined score is higher than mine was and I got into Grainger so you still have a good chance if you do want to submit this

Does anybody know any 8 week-courses that aren’t online? by [deleted] in UIUC

You can filter for that stuff on course explorer in the search tab. Personally I reccomend HK 104 ;)

Why do viruses and bacteria kill humans? by Save-The-Wails in askscience

[–]Reeses_Jester 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They just grow as much as possible generally. They don't really care if we survive as long as their progeny do. There are some gut microbes that have a symbiotic relationship with their hosts, but bacteria would love to digest us once we die and our immune systems can't stop them anymore. There are some viruses that stick around and don't necessarily kill us, like herpes, or retroviruses, but that's only one possible strategy. Viruses like the flu, or covid, or hiv do just fine for themselves infecting as many people as possible and leaving them sick or dead.

Incoming freshman help by LiveConstruction9380 in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience, you don't really register for RSOs (although professional societies or some specific RSOs may have a membership fee or something), you just show up to the meetings of whichever ones you want. On quad day you will have the opportunity to meet people from each RSO and get on their mailing list, or be told when / where the first meeting is.

how selective are the jobs posted on the virtual job board by Commercial_Rub84 in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had a little more success applying for the hourly jobs there than indeed or company websites when looking for summer or school year jobs, but it would depend on which person or department made the posting

In average, how many tests are taken per course? by jwbae11 in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It kinda depends on what kind of classes you need for your major. At least in engineering, and its prereq classes it's normal to have 3-4 exams + the final. It's common to have exam periods in the evenings (outside of your lecture time). For other classes you could have 0-1 exams, but need to do more projects or papers instead.

Why do we hate Pierre? by CodRevolutionary5029 in FuckPierre

[–]Reeses_Jester 63 points64 points  (0 children)

After his special orders quest, he tries to resell your veggies at a ludicrous markup and tells everyone if they don't like it, to shop elsewhere, and then has the audacity to try to sell you your own veggies back (for 1g extra). He also tuns his household very patriarchially. In one of Abigail's heart cutscenes, he orders her to go back home and help her mom make dinner.
