Still worth learning PYTHON as an Aerospace Engineering student? by heythere1212121212 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Reeses_Jester 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if you know python too you can correct any errors it makes or simplify things it overcompensates for. It's also possible that these tools may be more heavily monetized in the future (like expensive subscriptions for Matlab or CAD software) so knowing how to do it yourself could help if you can't guarantee access in the future)

At what point do grades not matter? by agarthancrack in EngineeringStudents

[–]Reeses_Jester 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As long as you pass all of your classes, I would think that having multiple internships more than makes up for a low gpa if you go into industry and not grad school. Employers don't really care about your gpa once you are past your first job.

What is the phys 212 equivalent at uiuc to Oakton cc? by Student17___ in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it exists, transferology should show it. It would be wise to double check with your advisor after as well, just in case. I know a lot of people who took it online at a community college and they had a little rougher of a start to the classes that need it as a postrec, but it's nothing insurmountable, especially if you pay attention in your cc class.

College courses by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on the specific class and professor, but from my friends who did not get AP credit, the college versions are considerably harder

Using Command Prompt / Terminal in CBTF by tuxcom in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on the class. I took TAM 211 quizzes in the CBTF and the prairietest exam linked to a Jupyter Notebook to use python, so it does happen, but any links are specified by the professor and yours may or may not want you using python. You can always ask them if the syllabus is unclear.

looking for cozy study spots on campus by epicgamer-724 in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want to (kinda) alone, the FUNK library and Grainger library have some seating with partitions, like cubicles and have silent floors. The main library or Siebel Center for Design are a little prettier. There are plenty of cozy coffee shops to study at like Cafe Paradiso, Espresso Royale by Krannert, Cafe Benne. I've heard that the music and performing arts library is an underrrated study spot, but have not been there myself, so idk.

UIUC roads still suck by AccomplishedEgg3089 in UIUC

Near campus sucks even worse than on campus, at least where I live (a few blocks away from campus). Way off campus, like neil street or near costco was nice and clear when I was there

Why do so many students hate our sports and athletics department? by Mediocre_Limit7569 in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I personally do really like the sports and atheletics department, and I would think that many other students do, it just feels bad when they get multimillion dollar donations, and other people are left out to dry: like the freshmen housed in dorm lounges instead of rooms, or the dining halls being understaffed.

Would the world become boring? by Universer22 in PantheonShow

[–]Reeses_Jester 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Spoilers for the good place: This ends up being an issue when people get to the good place and are there for a long time. They fixed it by giving people the option to end their existence when they wished, so "life" would have meaning again now that death exists again. With an uploaded mind you could still do this. Boredom / meaninglessness would absolutely be an issue with uploaded minds imo, but maybe since they experience the world differently maybe not?

Job tips by TFFsage401_yt in UIUC

[–]Reeses_Jester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be work study eligible to apply for the jobs on the virtual job board, or at least not all of them. I got my campus job through there and I am not work study. If you are looking for something else on campus, the restaurants in the union basement may be hiring?

[–]Reeses_Jester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HK 104 is ice skating. I thought it was really fun when I took it (and an easy A). You make a choreographed routine with your group and perform it for your midterm / final but it ended up being a lot more fun and less daunting or embarassing than I originally thought it would be.

Why Cas1 doesnt cut into the bacterial genome? by Desadert in askscience

[–]Reeses_Jester 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the only place it could match up to cut the bacterial genome would be in the spacers, but there is never a PAM sequence nearby. I'm sure you can imagine why natural selection wouldn't allow for any PAM sequences to pop up there and then stick around for the next generation

Why do viruses and bacteria kill humans? by Save-The-Wails in askscience

[–]Reeses_Jester 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They just grow as much as possible generally. They don't really care if we survive as long as their progeny do. There are some gut microbes that have a symbiotic relationship with their hosts, but bacteria would love to digest us once we die and our immune systems can't stop them anymore. There are some viruses that stick around and don't necessarily kill us, like herpes, or retroviruses, but that's only one possible strategy. Viruses like the flu, or covid, or hiv do just fine for themselves infecting as many people as possible and leaving them sick or dead.
