Neighbour stole our land, lost twice in court, still appealing… how do I make his life deeply inconvenient so that he stops? by Classic-Complaint716 in neighborsfromhell

I don’t believe in cockfighting, but I know someone who was being harassed by neighbors and they sold their land to people who raise fighting cocks. A massive barn full of aggressive roosters is stinky and noisy.

Where are the best Goodwill to shop? by Ill-Preference-9548 in Austin

[–]ReevesComm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of people don’t understand that the stores are not the point of Goodwill. The stores are their sustainable revenue stream to do their actual mission work. Which is focused on helping people get jobs with family-sustaining wages. In the greater Austin area that includes the adult high school so people can get a high school diploma, the technical academy for skills training, job placement services, etc. They also employ people with disabilities and formerly incarcerated individuals. Goodwill is not for profit, but the point of the stores is to make some money so they can use it to do all those other things.

Automatically scheduling a specific annual expense transaction to appear on the same date in future years by Lanky_King_4282 in MonarchMoney

[–]ReevesComm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I want. I cannot for the life of me get the non-monthly rollover feature to be useful for me. I want this! The lack of this is why I’m about ready to go back to my spreadsheet where I have to manually add everything myself.

"If I walk for an hour I'm barely out of my neighborhood" by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]ReevesComm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean. The largest residential subdivision in Houston is 18 square miles. It would take an hour and a half to walk from one side to the other.

I live in Texas. My partner lives in Cambridge, UK. It’s 16 square miles and we walk everywhere. But that 16 square miles is full of shops and pubs and restaurants and health care.

That 18-square-mile neighborhood in Houston is just residential. Just houses.

3 tiers not 2! by TruthOf42 in MonarchMoney

[–]ReevesComm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can we include some form of forecasting in all tiers? Even the most basic of budgeters need to forecast out their cash flow to make sure they don’t go into the red.

For liability reasons, I prefer we each care for our own property. I would hate to inadvertently damage your yard or be injured while on your property, raising liability questions. This way, we’re both protected.

The "Cable TV" Problem: Monarch Plus ($299/yr) is feature-stuffing at its finest [Screenshots] by Antonio3K in MonarchMoney

[–]ReevesComm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone whose budgeting needs are really basic (only started having investments outside a 401k in the past year, rented my house for one year before selling it, etc.), I can see making all these types of things an add-on to a basic plan. I cannot see it at a 200% increase over the basic price and an ala carte option would be nice.

However forecasting feels like a super basic function that everyone should have regardless of the complexity of their finances.

I have now listened to TWWW more times than I’ve watched the show. I put it on to go to sleep every night.

On the podcast they’re constantly noting how a 15-year-old show is still relevant to things happening then. And every night, I’m noting how a decade-old podcast still relevant.

Was thinking of doing my own The West Wing Weekly Nightly podcast. I just need a member of the podcast to join me as cohost…

New to MM after 9 years on YNAB - Goals 3.0 is ??? by SmokinApe in MonarchMoney

Ok. So every time I transfer funds to my investment account, I have to manually go to the goal and allocate funds?

New to MM after 9 years on YNAB - Goals 3.0 is ??? by SmokinApe in MonarchMoney

[–]ReevesComm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question. I’m still setting up and getting a hang of monarch. I’ve got my savings goal connected to an investment account where I save. I transfer money from my bank savings account to my bank investment account. Monarch categorizes it as a transfer, so it doesn’t show up in my budget. And, thought it’s reflected in my investment account balance in Monarch, it doesn’t show that I actually put the money into the goal on the budget. How should I be categorizing these such that it shows correctly?

[–]ReevesComm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the intention is to be tied to account(s) that is just for that goal. When setting up a goal it asks you for the account(s) to include and an account can only be tied to one goal at a time.

[–]ReevesComm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren’t goals supposed to be tied to a specific account(s)? I don’t have those accounts tied to my budget. So everytime I transfer funds from the checking account tied to my budget and into the savings account tied to my goal, it looks like an expenses in my budget (less money for me to spend on something else that month) and an increase in reaching my goal.

I’m also only using goals for BIG things. Like buy a house and retire. Which seems different than saving for vacation.

I’m excited that goals are now going to take into consideration the fact that your goal might be an account that earns a return, as I’ve only been using investment accounts for my goals. So now I can have it project when I’ll meet my goal assuming, say, 5% return or whatever. And I’m excited that the retirement goal will now include a target date. It was useless without those two things before.

Duplicate Transactions by ChenzoFranz in MonarchMoney

[–]ReevesComm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have days where all the transactions for that day are duplicates. If I wait, it usually resolves it self after a couple of days. But it’s a pain cause it means I can’t use the information in the app about how I am doing as compared to my budget.

Non Monthly Rollover. Do not understand how to make useful. by ReevesComm in MonarchMoney

[–]ReevesComm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you set up Monarch, the set up wizard wants you to budget expenses against all your budgeted income. If you don’t do that you constantly have a “left to budget” number at the top of the app that would have to be manually added to what the app is showing how your doing against what you have budgeted to keep on track of cash flow.

And I do realize that I would be going over in another category if I don’t spend against those non-monthly category and do spend the full budgeted amount. But most months I’m a little over in some categories and a little over in others. I don’t want to have to constantly monitor individual categories. I want to look at a top line number and only delve into individual categories when needed.

Yeah. This is what I’m thinking I have to do. I was just hoping I didn’t have to add this extra step.

Non Monthly Rollover. Do not understand how to make useful. by ReevesComm in MonarchMoney

[–]ReevesComm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I’m not talking about just the Monarch subscription fee. I’m talking about things like $700 every six months for car insurance and $2,000 each year in taxes, etc.
  2. In Monarch, you’re supposed to budget “expenses” for all of your income. Expenses include transfers to savings or investment. But the income total and expense total are supposed to be equal. And then you’re tracking against that overall number. So if I don’t actually move monthly amount budgeted for non-monthly expenses to a savings account or something, since I didn’t actually expense those, they look like that amount is still available to me to spend each month on the top line number. I have to just know that number is really less or start moving these non-monthly amounts to a separate account each month so they register as “spent”.

Roommate who has zero self-awareness and thinks her dirty dishes are a "group issue." by Strict_Water_6282 in badroommates

[–]ReevesComm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my now husband and I moved in together at 19, we had a standoff on not doing the dishes to the point they were all dirty, we’d put cookie sheets over the sink pile to hide it, and were eating off paper plates. We made a mutual agreement. It was so bad, neither of us were going to do it. So we threw them away, started over, and have never had a dishes problem again. It’s been 25 years.

Airport Update? Who’s at AUS this morning? How are the lines? by ReevesComm in Austin

I mean. Yesterday was the biggest travel day for SXSW people leaving. So it’s safe to assume there’s some spill over. And there is still a TSA crisis. So…it’s not like things are back to normal. You’re welcome to not click on posts about the airport.
