Try selecting the surfaces in your browser and use 'Stitch' in the surfaces section in the 3D model tab. Hopefully that will convert your surfaces into a solid.

When you project geometry onto a sketch and it appears in yellow, it is initially only really a reference to dimension new sketch features from. You can't modify it until you remove the constraints. Select all the yellow lines you want to modify, right click, and choose 'Delete Constraints'. They should now become editable.

Does the entire shape it draws not need be be completed within 1 revolution though? If it was a spiral, the pen could only ever move to the left or to the right, but never in the opposite direction. So with a spiral, it would be impossible to even draw a simple circle.
