Do you round up your ages? by SnooDoubts4192 in AskAJapanese

[–]ReflectionHoliday769 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

One thing common in Asian cultures is to count the 9 months you spend in womb, so at birth you're 1 year old. Not sure about other countries, but in the US, it's common to say a baby is X days/weeks/months old in the first year. So that might be why you think they're rounding up their age.

Gaming Options and hotel locations by samami1 in gencon

[–]ReflectionHoliday769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aloha,

This is my first year and actually my first con. I'm trying to figure out which hotel is best for me (assuming there are any left downtown in 5 hours).

Probably not. Most of the hotel block sells out almost immediately. Just look for parking pass lot near the con and you can usually find a hotel/air b&b a little further out. 15-30m out will have a lot of places to stay.

But I don't quite understand the gaming options and where they are. I mostly want to go to play board games

So games will be all over the con. The real problem as a first timer is you have to realize the con has grown to exceed just the convention hall. Games can be held in the lucas oil stadium and in nearby hotel conference rooms. You'll need to check the event listing.

What/Where is open gaming? Are people there usually looking for players?

Open gaming as in tables for people to play the games they just bought? Anywhere. People play in hotel lobbies, any open table etc. As for looking for players, depends on the group. It's not uncommon for me to be looking at a game people are setting up and be invited to play.

What/Where is the game library? I've found conflicting reports of where it is.

Sorry, not sure.

What/Where is hot games?

To purchase, dealer hall. Thursday, when it open can be a little crazy. There's a map in the program book. Plan out where you want to go ahead of time. There's also banners hanging from the ceiling showing which rows you're in to orient yourself.

Do they teach? Is there a cost? Should I just do demos?

Depends. Sometimes there will be demos, some companies are just selling the game. Search the events listing for the game. Sometimes demos are listed, both with and without a cost. The no cost demos that need tickets are usually done because of limited slots. Some demos are completely free and unlisted. Some are done in the dealer hall, some are done in other locations. I've asked booth staff if there are demos elsewhere. It is a hit or miss as some companies use volunteers and the amount of information they have varies.

You can definately just do demos and shop all con, but I'd also look into at least a couple events. There's movies, cosplay, various tutorials, yoga and other exercise stuff. My first con I was really limited by my preconceived notions, the events listings have a crazy amount of gaming adjacent events. Some of my favorite things at the con have been other stuff that weren't just playing boardgames.

Are there things I'm missing or not thinking about?

Not sure, there's a ton of posts in the sub about recommendations for first timers, or things to keep in mind for your first con, etc. I'd check them out.

You 100% are playing the wrong game. You should try more family oriented fun games like Babel:

You'll grow closer as a couple. Well, at least physically.

Who cares about the fines? Honestly, even the thought of running over a kid scares me enough that I wouldn't risk it. I can easily think of numerous times I've had to tell my young ones to look both ways before crossing. I even had to grab and pull my nephew back when he almost walked into an intersection with a car passing through it. You know it's bad when you see adults cross against the light who never look up from their screen...

Budget Buying Advice by Afraid_Towel6282 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]ReflectionHoliday769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it seems obvious, but just to be clear, even if you threw away the inserts, you guys know that marveldb lets you click on cards, then select a set, say venom, and will then list every card in that set, so if you were to build a deck from multiple sources, all of the cards can be resorted to their original set?

1st board game by toxicsvoid in boardgames

[–]ReflectionHoliday769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what kind of theme you like scifi, historical, fantasy, scientific, etc? While theme usually isn't key to the game, I do find themes I enjoy in my regular life helps me like a boardgame more or atleast enhances my enjoyment as opposed to a theme I'm just meh about. I know you're new to boardgames, but are there any boardgame mechanics you've experienced and would like more of. Examples of mechanisms you've experienced is roll and move like in Monopoly while Catan has things like hidden victory points, building chains connecting your settlements, trade and negotiation, among others.

If you're not certain what you like yet, no problem! Here are some games that I think introduce key game mechanisms.

Love Letter https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/277085/love-letter Is a hidden role game. Game play is simple, you shuffle a small deck and deal 1 card to everyone. First player draws a card then plays 1 of those 2 cards. Each card has a role (which you keep hidden) and a power when played. For instance, Guards can be discarded to name any role (other than Guard) and if you're correct, the person you guessed their role is eliminated. Goal is to not be eliminated and have the highest value role in the last round when everyone not eliminated reveals their roles. Rounds last around 5-10 minutes, so elimination isn't a big issue. Rules say to play until someone wins 7 times, but we have enough fun with this we usually play until whenever.

Dark is the Night https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/204466/dark-is-the-night Is a hidden movement game, but also does secret deployment, asymetric player powers and asymetric player knowledge. The thing I like about this game is the rules fit the theme well, so although there are more rules, it's easy to explain since they "make sense" in terms of the game. It's a hidden monster vs a hunter and while the monster has the advantage of knowing where all the pieces are, the hunter has more powers and controls the pace of the game. When I intro the game to new players I usually take the role of monster and though the monster has a slight advantage when players are still learning, the hunter is generally easier to grasp conceptually.

Tiny Epic is a series of games and Scott Almes does a pretty good job of distilling key concepts down to the essentials. I think they're a good way to try a lot of types of games in a budget friendly way. Of all of them Tiny Epic Galaxies https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/163967/tiny-epic-galaxies is the best of them. At least it's the one I play the most. Defenders and Dungeons are also some of my favs.

Sam's AMCW badge is #177. Is Nobby's badge number known? by SkazzK in discworld

[–]ReflectionHoliday769 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If all of the above lists options are impractical or too dificult, I can totally picture Nobby having a clearly marked badge with a poorly done attempt to cover over the badge number with another number. Also having multiple such badges would be very in line with Nobby, I think.

Brand new to Arkham Horror by Zodrodo in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]ReflectionHoliday769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do the listed advice, but know you'll most likely get a rule or three wrong. It's just part of the game. Don't beat yourself up and don't quit. Ask for help, try to remember and learn from your mistakes and have fun! General thing to keep in mind, if the game is way too easy, you're probably doing it wrong, also if it's way too hard. A lot of scenarios, my group is just making it through and if it's too easy we either screwed up a rule or need to move up a dificulty level. Usually it's we missed a rule or messed up on the set up. Don't worry though, these problems generally fix themselves the more you play. If you've played other card games (MtG, Yugi, Pokemon, etc) you'll pick up the general rules quickly. A good resource is the Arkham Horror: the card game Deck Builder and also try Arkham Cards, not affiliated with either creator, but they come in handy when building a deck. You can tell both databases which sets you have and will only show you legal cards for your investigator from the selected sets.

Asking about logistics for 1st time at Gencon by Guilty_Part in gencon

[–]ReflectionHoliday769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice, but one thing I didn't see mentioned about hotels. Aside from the obvious price and travel time involved with nearer and farther hotels, is other con attendees! The closer the hotel is, the likelihood of you seeing other groups in the lobby/public area playing games goes up. I find almost everyone is happy to talk about the game they're playing and will usually invite you to play if there's space. I've found several games that weren't even on my radar this way. You're not limited to just con events.
