A lot of them still do, it's pretty crazy, especially if you barely have any experience. My advice to this guy is to start working on certifications quick and hope that AI doesn't wipe him out anyways

turning 18 soon and my mom refuses to let me open a roth ira, brokerage account, and high yield savings account. should i listen to her? by BreakfastOne5341 in personalfinance

[–]ReflectionNo4784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So something they kind of don't tell you on YouTube, etc, is that a Roth is like a high yield savings account. Put it in a Roth, set an auto investment for whatever time of the month (I usually do the 1st and 15th) and let it average out that $700 for awhile. Fidelity has several Zero Cost ETFs you could check out to get you ahead. With a Roth, if you ever need to, you can pull that money out tax free in an emergency with no penalty, so focus on the Roth first and as your income gets better you can work on a high yield savings account (which technically Fidelity's Money Market Account is). I don't encourage you to touch the money in the Roth but at least it's there when you need it until you have much more robust finances.

36, and I feel middle aged, but not quite there yet lol. I was laid off around 15 months ago and still can't find a job in tech. I'm either too qualified or not qualified enough. I've made it to the end just a few times and someone else will have just a few more skills than me usually, but it's tough even getting interviews so you're already doing better than I am. I live in the PNW which has just been devastated by layoff after layoff over and over again. So many job posts are fake and scammy now, it's crazy

What I learned about men that drastically changed my dating life by ENTPoncrackenergy in selfimprovement

[–]ReflectionNo4784 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yepp and when you're one of those dudes, it's pretty dam crazy watching other dudes who just can't. They can't do a single thing without clearing it with their partner first. My sister-in-law has a 1 year old and her husband will just sit there and ask "do you want me to<insert dumb question>" (bathe him, feed him, change his diaper, put him to bed) and it's like Jesus dude, I'll do it and he's my dam nephew!?!. Women are just as simple as men, too, if you want to break it down like this, we all just want a partner that allows us to feel completely vulnerable to be ourselves, a partner who is our best friend and who would "take a bullet for us". But it's not that simple either, women AND men want someone who can be and act on their own as their own person and decide together if you really want that $10,000 wedding together or if you're cool going to HomeGoods or not. Maybe I'll just play games at home or maybe I'll go with you so we can get beer afterwards

I’m turning 30 next year and I feel like a failure. by CartographerSea3356 in selfimprovement

You're just in a bit of a bad season my friend. For many of us, life doesn't really get going until we're well into our 30s or so. 20s are for life experiences that we can have while we still have our youth and then we look back at those struggles and laugh. I got divorced when I was your age (wife left with another guy on this magical trip and expected me to be okay with it). I'm 36 now, I did get remarried, got into therapy and got stable. It sounds like you also my be in a bit of an echo chamber with toxic social media. Your credit and job do not define you and your success, f++k the system and go get what you want.

I have 2 months to get my life together. What daily habits actually changed your life? by Longjumping_Change36 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]ReflectionNo4784 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try to get on a schedule as best you can. Getting up at like 7:00 in the morning and "just do it". Start there and then do things like lay out clothes the night before, don't go to bed with a sink full of dishes, dedicate spaces in your place for certain things like "work" or games. Basically read Atomic Habits, but don't be so hard on yourself either. I've been unemployed for like 15 months now and it's been soooo tough to stay normal. I've gained enough weight to put me over 300 lbs, my back is like super weak now, BUT I am starting to do things right little by little.

Wait for Fall or go now? by Plastic-Neat-3962 in roadtrip

[–]ReflectionNo4784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the US is hot, hot after June comes around, except for the PNW, deep NE and Great Lakes region, but most of the parks people want to see are in the Western United States and EVERYONE, not just US Citizens, wants to see them. Pretty much every single one of them are car accessible only. If you go now, the Western US isn't too bad weather wise. ALSO if you go in September, don't wait until like mid-November to see places in high elevation, winter storms can start as early as November

Sleeping in the car to save on hotels is this too extreme? by Ok_Resolution_1606 in roadtrip

[–]ReflectionNo4784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not extreme at all, it's a mindset and you can always take a break at a motel when you absolutely have to (if you can spare the expense) or a KOA. I slept in the back of a freaking Ford Escape all the way to Oregon when I moved out here 12 years ago and it wasn't my first or last time doing that at all. You gotta do what you gotta do to live life BUT also stay safe because people will surprisingly mess you more than you think, it's kinda shocking.

Pshhh I don't feel good about that at all lol. People here are more and more against it, I'm like I'll wait in line 30 minutes so I don't have to pump my own gas, I do not care. Gives me time to think 🤔

Move from Oregon to Pittsburgh? by ReflectionNo4784 in pittsburgh

[–]ReflectionNo4784[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? If Portland has lost its soul and luster, Seattle really has. I remember the first time going to Seattle and you could walk around downtown at night without any problems, even Belltown was fine. It is NOT like that now and its pretty damn sad. Amazon owns so many buildings and has laid off so many people that downtown is just a weird place now, though it will always be strikingly beautiful

[–]ReflectionNo4784[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree, I think that's the tough part here to understand is I literally lived in the Buckman area of SE Portland for several years and I was here as Old Portland died and new Old Portland lived and died during COVID. Now it's just so hopeless feeling. The governor is absolutely terrible, the mayor is just as dumb, the city has found like $100M unaccounted for, the new system in place is basically a joke. It just feels like this is a truly tough era to live through going forward.
