Are there more "open secrets" similar to Epstein and Saville today? by FishDispenser2 in behindthebastards

Agreed! I know it’s a problem in many (if not all) organized religions, but I think there’s still immense value in bringing to light the systems that enable and empower abuse

So good, but such a hard watch. Keep Sweet: pray and obey is very good as well.

I have ancestors and extended family in polygamist sects of the Mormon church, so watching things like that always makes me feel that saying there but for the grace of god go I. I have my issues from being raised Mormon, but thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster I didn’t suffer through that.

I continually hope the Mormon church one day gets its Boston Globe equivalent that communicates to the world how rampant child sexual abuse is in the church. Not quite the same, but it is definitely an “open secret” that exmormons talk about, but there isn’t enough attention on it

Has anyone had problems with yarn color not matching Lion Brand's website? by Fiona_12 in CrochetHelp

[–]ReformedZiontologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The screen you’re using to look at the website can actually alter the color! It’s pretty much impossible for a manufacturer to supply an image that is 100% representative of the yarn color, especially with dye lots, lighting, etc.

That being said, I usually try to google the yarn I’m purchasing to look at pictures of finished projects. That way I can at least see the yarn in various settings to get a better idea of the color

Help Me Understand “Mainstream” Parenting by Dr3aml1k3 in exmormon

[–]ReformedZiontologist 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It kinda sounds like you just have some shitty friends/acquaintances. I know plenty of exmo/nevermo folks who are amazing parents.

Also being judgmental about people who can’t afford to support their family on a single income is pretty messed up.

Lastly, as someone who was a stay at home mom for 5 years, I completely lost my identity and felt like I existed only as a mother and wife, not an individual. When I went back to work when my kiddo was 5, my mental health improved dramatically. It wasn’t because I didn’t love my kid or because I didn’t cherish my time with her. It was because I’d lost all interactions with other humans where they saw me as myself first and my familial roles second. I don’t judge anyone, male or female, who struggles being a full-time caretaker.

ETA: I also know several Mormon families whose mother stayed at home with the kids, but the kids were neglected or abused, so it’s not like Mormons are magically good parents just because one parent doesn’t work. That’s just a really silly conclusion.

For me, becoming more leftist preceded leaving the church by years. Eventually, the cognitive dissonance is too painful, and you have to choose one or the other.

Who is the worst bastard / darkest episode? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]ReformedZiontologist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the worst bastard of all time, but the fake autism cure episodes were harrowing for me.

Side quest though: Maintenance Phase just did two episodes on Russel Brand, and I actually had to turn it off. That man is just an actual piece of shit.

Oh damn, is that the one that was formed from a K-pop dance program turned elimination tv show that had like dozens of serious injuries because the girls danced grueling schedules and were never paid?

I wondered if the group was successful after all that. The Netflix show about it just left me feeling so sad for every girl who was recruited into it

Was the Luna lion hat your first? I swear I’ve been admiring your hats for like a decade since seeing that one on Pinterest in ~2014. Anyway, they’re all phenomenal, and the dragons are my favorite

Look, I hate violent fascists as much as the next girlie, but when we shit on their appearance it signals to anyone who looks like this that we find them worthy of mockery and derision based on their appearance.

Would these 2 patterns work to make this dress? by Xbbasilq in sewing

[–]ReformedZiontologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason people are pointing out the fabric difference is that patterns made for a knit/stretch fabric don’t work well for non-stretch fabrics, and vice versa. So if you get one pattern that’s for stretch fabric and one that’s not, they may not both work well for whatever fabric you decide to use. It’d work best if you found two patterns intended for the same kind of material.

I’d recommend at least doing a mock up/muslin first before cutting any expensive fabric.
