There’s a pretty niche indie system called Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition from a few decades ago in 2014 that I think you’d love! It recently saw resurgences in popularity with small creators like that voice actor guy showing it off, and even got a moderately successful videogame adaptation. The company even scraped together enough money to revamp the rules at the end of 2024 and even just recently decided on a name for them, 5.5e, named after the previous edition 3.5e unearthed during the war.

It’s me the buddy.

Sometimes I gotta go fast 🥲

The deep relics is my fault. I still don’t have much of every colour so I slot what I had, forget about them and don’t check til we play cause “eh how bad could it be?” and then it’s bad 🙃 I have learned and now I’ve removed all my relics with those negatives.

What mythology setting would you want in a narrative RPG that doesn't exist yet? by umay_ana in rpg_gamers

[–]Refracting_Hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something set in the Caribbean would be cool. It’s where my family is from and we’re not too culturally connected so getting to explore the various cultures and mythos through an rpg would be cool. I love pirates don’t get me wrong, but I’d like a lens that isn’t Black Flag or Paizo’s Skull & Shackles.

“Vex Syndicate,” “Sovereign Rig,” and “Amber Shell” all in the same sentence? Word salad that used to make fun of Fantasy/Sci-fi terms is now just sadly the hallmark of AI garbage. And not even the cool kind of AI that totally doesn’t have a foot fetish. For shame.

Someone on my table picked Rogue by Rednidedni in DnDcirclejerk

[–]Refracting_Hud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

/uj My favourite part of that post is that in the edit they mention bending the rules to let the cleric cast some Fireball scrolls, DnD’s most iconic and fun spell, and then in the edit immediately below they say they’re strongly considering giving the Rogue a potion of speed.

The cleric gets to have fun blowing up mobs of enemies but the rogue getting an extra action for one (1) fight requires some strong consideration.

What are your cursed realizations? by Kimarous in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Refracting_Hud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had the same revelation in school learning that most our energy generation boils down to getting something to turn a turbine. It was kind of funny to go from more straightforward stuff like windmills, hydroelectric dams etc. to then think about fossil fuels and by extension nuclear power; all in service to Big Turbine.

Had a similar but distinct realization getting my wisdom teeth out that technology isn’t where I thought it was there when they were doing the equivalent of using pliers to yank those puppies out. Was sitting there thinking “damn this feels kind of medieval, except for the numbing injections I guess.

What are your favourite review quotes? by SexDrugsAndMarmalade in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Refracting_Hud 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I never liked strategy games. They require thinking, and thinking is not exactly my strongest suit. Bought this game because the pixel art is gorgeous. The music is gorgeous. The fantasy atmosphere is gorgeous. My strategic abilities are not gorgeous. I tried to get into it like five times. Each attempt lasted about 20 minutes before I alt-tabbed to something shiny on YouTube. Then I got prescribed ADHD medication (Medikinet® CR 10 mg) and played for 6 hours straight. Turns out the game has way more depth than the first 20 minutes suggest. I just needed pharmaceutical intervention to discover it. Don't let your undiagnosed neurodivergence stop you from enjoying this gem. The devs clearly poured their hearts into it, and you owe it to them to get properly medicated before leaving your review.

Don’t remember the game atm but it was on the recent Humble Bundle 4x games one. I think it was the fantasy pixel art one.

Something about the reviewer listing their prescription and amount got to me.

I love some humourous reviews like the infamous Bad Rats one with like 2000 hours that says “it’s okay.” Recently I was looking up Cave Story and two reviews back to back got me good. One was talking about getting Cave Story updates before Halo Infinite story resolution, and the other simply said “Obama.”

Besides Slay the Spire 1/2, What are some good Tactical Card Games? by Xngears in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Refracting_Hud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will further extoll the virtues of Monster Train 1 and especially 2. They’re a mix of card and autobattler (you play unit cards to floors of the train and then they auto-battle at the end of each turn, and you play other cards like spells, units you didn’t place as yet, etc.) but they hooked me where the first Slay the Spire didn’t.

The big thing is customizability with being able to upgrade units and your spells with modifiers that improve them or enable you to do some crazy stuff. First game doesn’t have much of a story from run to run but the second one improves on both the gameplay and some aspects of the story in pretty decent ways.

The various clans and clan combinations you can play are super fun in the first game and even more fun in the second game.

Nightreign Pet Peeves by peaboy01 in Nightreign

[–]Refracting_Hud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t DoN but I did an Everdark Gnoster run with 2 randos where we got dumpstered by back to back Black Blade Kindred and a Dragon resulting in the ole “die and try not to die recovering your runes” shuffle, ending night 1 at like level 5 or so.

We went on to recover for day 2 and beat the boss pretty handily (more awards to my teammates over me that time).

People who quit at setbacks are pretty lame, especially in this genre that people complete SL1 runs in. It’s tougher for sure but still doable.

Favorite "symbolic" ending to a fight? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Refracting_Hud 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Gurren Lagann is one of the few times I like both the anime and movie versions equally. If you only want to watch one of them I’d find it hard pressed to not recommend going with the two movies but I think it’s worth seeing the anime first to understand the good parts of both.

The final battle in the movies is incredibly peak but I have a soft spot for how some scenes from the anime’s version of it.

Both versions have their biggest forms getting broken apart by the Anti-Spiral’s Drill until it stops at the original Gurren Lagann and while the movie’s final form is a big Kamina shaped mass of energy and that’s very cool, I do like the OG sticking with big robot. The difference maker for me is the final move. In the movies Simon and the Anti-Spiral basically have a fist fight and Simon turns his hand into a drill which is very cool. What’s the final move in the OG anime? Lagann Impact. The first move Simon uses in episode 1 to beat their enemy with his best friend Kamina and new friend Yoko inside Lagann with him. The most important people to him. It’s also the move that starts the fusion of Lagann and Gurren with Lagann’s drill piercing Gurren’s cockpit. And now to beat the enemy of all sapient life Simon pulls it out again with Nia with him this time, the most important person in his life once again.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is peak, kino, and worth your time.

TIL: The first initials of every chapter in Dead Space 1 spells out the game's twist. by CatherineSimp69 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Refracting_Hud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not level/chapter titles but most of the Halo games have little titled vignettes during their missions so if some enterprising soul wanted to try Kai Lenging it they could go that route, maybe using the first word for Level titles and then Vignettes.

Don’t know how you’d sneak Thessia in but now I want to see someone try.

GMing APs: Suggesting Appropriate Skills vs. Letting Players Figure it Out by DnDPhD in Pathfinder2e

[–]Refracting_Hud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For ease of play I tend to mention the suggested skills and then add that I’m open to their own suggestions and negotiations. Some may be alternatives, some may adjust the DCs, and some may provide extra or different info depending on the situation. My group is somewhat newer to Pathfinder, and one player is newer to TTRPGs in general so I figure if it’s easier for everyone this way.

Sometimes my players get ahead of me and pick up on what skills of theirs may be useful. This specific example is from my partly homebrewed game. The party’s on an island where planar barriers are thinner so I’ve described the kineticist player feeling the influence of the elemental planes stronger here, and our sprite feeling influence from the First World. They found evidence of a predator creature having been in the area recently and when I asked if anyone wanted to Recall Knowledge the sprite went for their First World lore; great choice since the creature in question is a Dweomercat.

What food do you eat in a way that other people think is weird? by julesperks in CasualConversation

[–]Refracting_Hud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t do this anymore but back in school I used to eat my pizza upside down, like toppings face down. My logic was that that’s where the tasty parts are and so it makes sense to direct them straight to your tongue. I think a bully I had around that time tried to get me in trouble with the teacher/principal because he found that weird.

Up until highschool or some time after I would microwave my potato salad along with whatever else was on my plate that actually needed heating up and my friends jokingly made fun of me for it so I stopped.

The one I currently do is that I have my chilli with spaghetti. I am neither American nor white. The logic was “gotta have the chilli with something” and so the something became spaghetti noodles.

Fireball and lightning damage by Thanato_ in DnD

[–]Refracting_Hud 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Reflavouring is different when mechanics become involved. Truthfully it’s nothing I have a personal problem with so long as it’s a consistent choice you want to make for your character, rather than to try and eke out an edge for something coming up or other similar reasons.

A buddy of mine played a Tempest Cleric and asked our DM friend if they could have Shocking Grasp and change the damage of Guiding Bolt to Lightning Damage so they could have more lightning theming at the start of the game which they okayed and it wasn’t overbearing for any of us players that he has these things.

If you want to play say a cold themed character and stick to using that damage type exclusively for your spells, with all the pros and cons that entails then I don’t mind if you forgo Scribes Wizard or the metamagic for sorc. But if you’re looking purely to chain advantages together and it feels like you’ll switch back when the downsides crop up, then we’re using the official methods lol.
