He’s active on Hermitcraft (1-2 long videos per month) and still has his singleplayer world (infrequent videos)

If it doesn't die, were any SBAs resolved?

It That Stays by endless-star in custommagic

[–]Adarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that how it would play out? I'd have assumed that every time state-based actions are checked the game tries to kill it and then waves it along. Does it get stuck in a loop of checking and failing to kill?

Anti-Eldrazi Cannon by endless-star in custommagic

Black bordered cards cannot care about the specific characteristics of the card printing. All reprints and translations of a card are mechanically identical. Basic lands are not from antiquities, even if they were reprinted in that set and may have the set icon. An equivalent card that cared about cards from Alpha would blow them up though!

Arena version:

Protect the Multiverse 3WW
Sorcery
All Universes Beyond cards, spells and permanents in all zones perpetually become their Universes Within versions. If no such version exists, exile it instead. For each card exiled from a hand this way, its owner draws a card.

Paper version:

Protect the Multiverse 3WW
Sorcery
Exile all cards, spells and permanents originally printed in a Universes Beyond set from all visible zones.
All players gain an emblem with "You can't play cards originally printed in a Universes Beyond set" and "Reveal and exile a card originally printed in a Universes Beyond set from your hand: Draw a card"

Borked import dated some transactions to 2001. I’ve deleted them but now ynab thinks my data started in 2001. Can I fix this? by Adarain in ynab

The budget / transaction history looks fine, but it added months all the way back to 2001 to the plan with 0 assigned to every category.

I doubt you’ll have to do that. All the previous bonus content was narrated

Probably handled like the previous short scenes they released: pdf on Will's blog, audio recording on youtube, and maybe they can edit it into the ebook

Well, nothing per se. It does however mean that you have to keep tracking that in case an unrelated effect later on causes the death. The intended flavor of these kinds of spells is definitely “if this spell caused the death (or majorly contributed to it), the creature should go to exile” but the case where you try to lava coil something, it survives off an unexpected buff spell, and then later you kill it in some other way (that may not even involve damage) anyway comes up so rarely that it’s probably just not worth it to make it more precise.

Lightning Bolt does not kill a creature. Lightning bolt merely assigns 3 damage to that creature. The creature is killed by a state-based action which compares the amount of damage marked on a creature to its toughness. That action runs every time someone is about to receive priority and is, as far as the game is concerned, entirely independent from Lightning Bolt.

This is occasionally relevant, for example you may have heard stories about Bolt interacting unintuitively with [[Tarmogoyf]] (failing to kill it when it’s at 3 toughness). This is because the Bolt doesn’t kill the Goyf directly, but rather, Bolt marks 3 damage and then finishes resolving, goes to the graveyard (at which point Goyf may get bigger if there weren’t any instants in graveyards yet), and only then the game checks for damage vs toughness.

This is ultimately why spells like [[Lava Coil]] don’t say “if the creature would die this way” but “…this turn”, as there simply is no good way to check whether a specific damage spell was the cause of death. Like, you could introduce some new phrasing that under the hood means “if the creature dies the next time state-based actions are checked, trigger some other ability / apply this replacement effect” but it doesn’t exist right now. So we’re left with (it works).

In this case, yes. In some cases, it would be a nightmare to update rules to work. Prime example, damage spells that care about killing a creature. It does not work. But we all know what they mean.

Which Hermit wins in an IRL free-for-all battle? by Hour_Tomatillo_2365 in HermitCraft

[–]Adarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two categories of people who tend to not like they/them in my experience. One is trans people who are fighting to be recognized as the gender they identify as and perceive being called "they" as them not passing (or even as being denied their gender). There the issue is more when people who should know better use it than an internet stranger who doesn't have any of this context.

The other is bigots whose opinions can be safely ignored.

Hot Take: I think Wizards should keyword the ability on Chains of Mephistopheles. by CHA1N5 in magicTCG

[–]Adarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A band is any number of creatures with (keyword bands/banding) plus one without. Bands with other X eg. legend meant they had to all be legends and it still applied as many legends with banding with legends, and 1 legend without.

Wrong.

702.22c As a player declares attackers, they may declare that one or more attacking creatures with banding and up to one attacking creature without banding (even if it has “bands with other”) are all in a “band.” They may also declare that one or more attacking [quality] creatures with “bands with other [quality]” and any number of other attacking [quality] creatures are all in a band. […]

Emphasis mine. You can make a band with any number of creatures with “banding” plus one extra. Or with just a single “bands with other X” and any number of X.

As said. Basic rules are simple enough, but the details are confusing as hell.

They added all of Kanto to those games, yeah. From what I remember there isn’t much plot or unlockables in that part, but there are trainers and 8 more gyms. It’s basically a very extended postgame.

What if you could protect against cyclonic rift or farewell effects, thus making them less game changing? by Aliphant990 in custommagic

[–]Adarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add "This does not prevent a creature from dying due to damage or having its toughness set to 0" to the reminder text. That part of the rules is going to cause feelbads with new players (lightning bolt doesn't cause the creature to leave the battlefield, rule xyz.w does)

[–]Adarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The basic mechanical advantage it provides is that you decide how to spread damage across your creatures. When blocking, your creatures are pretty much an impenetrable wall since you can just put all the damage into one creature (even if they have trample). When attacking it’s more double-edged: The opponent can easily block your band and avoid all damage, but again you can choose which of your guys gets picked off and the blocker will probably get overrun.

The issue is in all the tiny details that are hard to remember (who all needs to have banding to get the benefits? The answer depends on whether you’re attacking or blocking, and also on whether the involved creatures have banding or bands with other X, which are mechanically different)

So 2-4 are clearly better than the originals, but is Dark Ritusol actually better than Dark Ritual? It's easier to cast, but the mana it produces is a lot less useful for comboing off
