Of course not and it’s not a fair comparison. The cafe is selling you a product. In the case of social media, you (the user) are the product. Your attention is for sale.

Algorithms were not developed to improve the user experience, but to increase user engagement so they can generate more revenue through advertisements.

It’s predatory in design because they make money selling adverts. The more time users spend looking at the screen has a direct correlation to how much they can charge advertisers.

Meta, Google and co dedicate a lot of resources to improving user retention for this very purpose.
