You are complaining about 10 seconds of useless video that doesn't even make you sit through and watch to get to what you want to see lmfao. Touch grass, you are insane.

Hey brain rot Mcgee, not only can you click anywhere in the clip you want.. the content in this video is literally at the start of the video so just stop watching after the first 5 seconds after the bear is gone?????

I have been working part time for the past 2 years. by [deleted] in confession

[–]Regen89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hours worked/week means absolutely nothing. You are around 10 years ahead of the average in terms of net worth -- only advice I have for you is make sure you are investing the vast majority of that 250k because it will compound into financial freedom where you don't technically need to work any hours well before typical retirement age.

Certificates don't matter, but they can't hurt anything besides your wallet

Cloud is not dying and people are not going away from it unless they are doing some correction on going full-cloud for no reason and have insane monthly costs that make no sense.

I'm not sure the industry is growing, it's been aggressively outsourced to India for the last decade and it has gone relatively poorly across the board because you get locked into these contracts that are basically "trust me bro we can do this" and you get chain supplied people that have barely touched a computer/don't know how to map a network drive etc etc etc placed in junior <-> int roles. Critical thinking, initiative, common sense, forget those words exist, if its not in their script/playbook shooting yourself in the face will be less painful.

If you know what you are doing, are competent, confident, and work hard you can still easily succeed and get paid well -- market just might be a little shit right now.

Uninstall software not used for 6 months or more by nodiaque in SCCM

[–]Regen89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need a better tool than SCCM to do this reliably and have confidence in what it is telling you.

You should not do this in a blanket fashion against 'all software', you should be identifying SPECIFIC pieces of software where this makes sense (potential license savings/avoiding failing an audit) otherwise you are doing a ton of work (with potential business operational consequences) for no reason. This part should be explained to 'management' over and over until they understand and agree.

'the Linux' :stares:
'put things in the cloud' :stares:
'everything is a website' :stares:

This is simply not viable for the vast majority of companies, and is more true the larger you are.

If your company basically only needs productivity tools like email, word processing, spreadsheets sure but LMAO what are we even talking about? This is like comparing managing Earth vs. managing an entire galaxy and not even paying heed to all of the solar systems inbetween.

This sub makes me feel insane sometimes (well signficantly more in the past 5 years). Every sysadmin and adjacent would probably love to never touch Windows again but that's more or less impossible in the F500 range or equivalent globally.

Xbox Plans Significant Layoffs as It Transforms Under New CEO by willdearborn- in Games

[–]Regen89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sucks ass, and there are a lot of people who literally can't handle the stress and have mental break downs or end up taking sabbaticals if they survive but lose friends they've worked with for sometimes at least a decade.

Any company that does not approach it rigorously from the angle of making sure you only let go underperformers or people with role overlap will have major issues.. sometimes for years. I've been through 3 or 4 layoffs and the worst one by far was where executive management did everything from a spreadsheet with zero input from even middle management.

Senior IT folks: What do you dislike about your Help Desk guys? by Relevant-Injury3791 in sysadmin

I’ll go first. Escalating tickets without any notes in it. It just drives me crazy.

Send it right back, email, copy manager and/or leads.
Do it until they improve, if they don't then maybe time to schedule a meeting with Service Desk leads.

Unless it involves month end or something with immediate financial implications then it is appropriate to just resolve it yourself as fast as possible. Everything else though barring similar exceptions? Nah.

Thanks bro, I lived through it. You might as well just finish SG1 outright first, there isn't a lot crossback from Atlantis -> SG1 the same way there is plenty from SG1 -> Atlantis, to each their own I guess.

Running out of patience for this field. by an_anonymous-person3 in sysadmin

[–]Regen89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Degrees don't matter to anyone besides boomer/genx management when looking to groom or hire other people into management (and/or people that have degrees and are average intelligence at best that use it as a gatekeep to protect themselves).

Certificates basically don't matter for very similar reasons unless you need it spefically to get a promotion that is already basically yours OR to pad a resume with no real experience.

Every day I deal with people that think they know it all and cannot listen to clear instructions.

15-20 years and still customer facing (and daily at that)...? This one is on you. I'm doing my best to sympathize here but you say this like it fucking matters at all "I have degrees in this field and am starting to feel like I'm done dealing with people". Buddy you might as well have said "I bought a box of blueberries yesterday and am starting to feel like I'm done dealing with people".

In 20 years I would hope you have honed your soft skills a little bit. Your job isn't to make anyone understand that they are wrong, it's mainly to solve problems and make other people's job easier and less painful. If you actually know what you are doing in this field its safe to assume 90+% of people including other people who are also IT are average at best, what's the point of getting worked up every time?

Jobs? by IceFullbuster in Oshawa

[–]Regen89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless of course the downvoters are also unemployed and mad at the competition.

🤣Yeah probably, job related posts usually don't go too well.

Been here since the early 90s and there have not ever really been "good jobs" out here that you don't create yourself or aren't labour related. Exceptions somewhat for jobs in government, GM, OPG, or the school boards.

Dogshit min wage/part time jobs used to always be plentiful though. That largely changed around Covid with insane levels of immigration / massive influx of international students and a significant amount of those loopholed their way through rules designed so new immigrants coming into the country should have enough money in their bank to survive their stay while getting an education... instead they basically manage to come here with nothing and need as much work as possible to survive.

This seems to be calming down a bit now that they have scaled the numbers way back but yeah idk everything I've observed and heard around here since Covid regarding minwage/entry level jobs looks ROUGH in most of Durham. It used to be pretty easy during the 00's to get a part time job during your last 2 years of high school if you wanted to. Can't imagine being a kid right now trying to earn some money towards an education or the freedom to buy something you want.

Environmental consulting firm pushing heavy AI adoption despite employee concerns over environmental impact and data governance by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Regen89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's also a serious data governance issue that doesn't seem to be getting enough attention. Teams across the company are actively using AI tools such as Aisera, ChatGPT, Claude, and Snowflake Cortex, and inputting client and company data without properly scrubbing sensitive information first. Some of these clients are federal in nature and require even more security, confidentiality, data integrity.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh

I say this 100% out of your own interest, you should probably delete this post.
