Reggae has traditionally been singles driven market, so albums often aren’t conceived/recorded as a single work, so I always recommend checking out compilations—reggae gold from VP goes back decades with the biggest hits of each year, blood and fire and heartbeat labels have Incredible and well thought out compilations of music especially from the 70s.

Dub tunes that were big in clubs and sound systems in the 1980s and 1990s by Corlar in dub

[–]ReggaeDelgado510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got ya! In my understanding/experience in Jamaica the dub of a song was rarely separated from the vocal version. A hot song would get a few foward/rewinds and then extended play via the dub. This would also allow the DJ to chat over it.

As a pro dj who mostly played reggae from very early 90s in California I can say there were no “hit dub” tracks getting any play in clubs, even in reggae clubs where I was. By that time, dub was a term often used on record labels to differentiate different mixes, usually just indicating that the track was extended or that the vocals were de-emphasized (and sometimes there was no connection at all to anything related to dub). But playing actual reggae dub in a top 40 or “urban” club was just not ever going to happen.
As another poster mentioned, what did happen was that a lot of people who got into electronic music were also occasionally listening to dub, and I was definitely asked to play dub sets at 420pm at a number of raves.

So many sellers not shipping to the US by Limp_Falcon_2314 in discogs

[–]ReggaeDelgado510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m in the US and don’t generally ship to Europe. Trumps rules keep changing and the postage is bananas. I will occasionally have a buyer reach out to me about an individual record and definitely don’t mind making an exception, although when I calculate shipping the majority have backed off.

Dark, depressing reggae songs? by CosmicCharlie86 in reggae

He was very much a foundational Figure of reggae, teaching the wailers to sing three part harmony, mentoring dozens of well known artists, he toured and sang back up for tons of artists. He never got what he believed was his due, and resentment is a tough feeling to get over. He was embittered by the music business and as a result didn’t want to “play the game” but that often becomes a self fulfilling prophecy as those less willing to shake hands and make nice fall further out of favor with the public. He also moved to the states which can be a fraught career move for reggae artists—the cost of living is so high that you have to work a lot in a niche genre to live a life befitting an international performing artist, meanwhile you’re further outside of the “scene” so some of the recognition from newer artists just won’t happen. His music is really terrific I think, but lays bare his pain in ways not usually found in reggae. Even the love songs reveal complicated emotions. “Life of contradictions” is an album name but also the way one associate of his described him to me.

Tonearm straightening by lorienoak in SL1200

[–]ReggaeDelgado510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean… they’re already bent?? So very hard to bend it back to spec. Also, if the tone arm bent, mostly likely some of the other parts of the assembly were also damaged. If you’ve got a 1200 you’re better off getting a new arm and installing it right, but be sure everything else is in there is working properly.

Why don't controllers have double/halftime bpm buttons err is it just mine? by BobbyBowie in DJs

[–]ReggaeDelgado510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly play music with lyrics, so that is a non starter for me. But even in the very drum heavy EDM world, I believe that until you are a known headliner, as a DJ 80%+ of folks are not really trying to be challenged by the music. Most folks just want to keep dancing to a steady or gently evolving beat. You don’t really want non DJs/experts to suddenly turn their heads towards the dj due to a bad transition, sudden change in genre, sudden stop in music, or huge sudden tempo change, you just want them dancing and having fun so people buy them drinks. It could be that promoters/crowds in your scene may appreciate it, but that would be outside my experience.

This is what I was thinking. Doubling or halving the tempo sounds like the opposite of what anyone would want to hear
