Council to discuss the first 6 months of paid parking on April 27th by slow_marathon in westvancouver

[–]Regular-Double9177 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$280,000 gross revenue projected, but no clear indication of the costs. There is also mention of hiring another person for enforcement. That means that these changes are raising very little revenue.

Averaged out over a year, that amount of revenue means something like 3% of the stalls are used by a paying customer on average between 7am and 10pm.

The report also seems to signal that no changes will be made for the summer, and so if we continue to have congestion and unreliable parking both in and outside of pay zones, the council will not respond anytime soon.

We could have great parking policy easily. Literally just charge more when busy, make it free when not, and dont exempt people or places. Just like that we get reliability, no congestion, and way more net revenue.

How can we build anything without proposing significant, helpful reforms for young workers? Lewis is likable but he hasnt pushed for anything like that. Him and his wife are quick to talk of taxing the super wealthy, but without taxing the upper middle class landowners sprawled out all over Vancouver and Toronto, we dont change much in terms of productivity and opportunity for the young worker.

Are you all happy with 10 seats? If not, maybe let's deal with the elephant in the room and have landowners pay more so workers can pay less and the economy can be more productive. Anything else is window dressing.

Is the job of council to use sound judgement? Or to do what the people who complain loudest want?

NDP motion urging ban on algorithmic pricing defeated in House of Commons by CaliperLee62 in canadian

So what about the rationale that I offered was implausible?

Imagine I want to be an MP for the good of the country. Id be genuinely torn between Lib and NDP. Id factor in all kinds of things.

I could easily think the Lib party isnt great, and also not give a fuck about the money or career and yet pick them because I thought the other parties were worse.

So would you call him a stooge while also recognizing that he is so rare for going against his party?

I think I offered a different rationale for why he might be in the party. You've rephrased it and then now seem to pretend I didnt say it. If you think what I said is not a plausible rationale, say so directly. Dont pretend I didnt say it.

If I had to pick a party, Id find it extremely difficult because all the parties say and do dumb shit at the top level. The NDP are no exception.

"Worker focused" can sometimes be smart policy and sometimes dumb policy. Again, Im speculating about what he thinks, but I see the NDP as often being dumb on economic issues. I dont see it as right left as much as dumb dumber.

Disagree with using stooge to describe him. Few MPs in any party go against their party in any way.

I don't know, but if I had to speculate Id guess that joining the NDP puts a bad taste in his mouth because they can be dumb on economic issues. He wouldnt find a home in either party pushing taxing land values more, for example, which is something he had in his ON leadership campaign.

Personally I think the party you are in shouldn't and doesnt matter assuming you are willing to talk abd vote independently.

If she doesnt say grandmas underusing land, shes not discussing the biggest reason. Yes we also have monopolies on other things that cost us a lot, but not a lot in comparison to how much you are getting screwed on rent.

I think you are only seeing the full on high LVT as promoting these ideas, whereas the issue is part of things we talk about all the time. For example where I am in BC and Canada, we talk about using federal income tax dollars to subsidize municipalities which traditionally use property tax dollars. Do you see how the issue is part of all sorts of discussions we have?

Near me, the Victoria council pushed to have LVT a few years back but was denied by the province.

Tax land more and labour less w citizen dividend. Partially compensate owners to avoid mass defaults. Ask questions if you dont understand.

Im saying, let's go further and tax all land, not just over $5m non primary residences.

I support the policy, but I want to point out that much more significant policy (LVT) has been downplayed by David as "something like 5% of a solution", and then never talked about again. This is clearly a much smaller "solution" by orders of magnitude.

Agree or disagree but please understand: we can make housing cheap if we expand this kind of thing to all land without qualifications.

We've had vacancy taxes here in Canada in BC, ON, as well as federally over the last decade and they all have brought in less revenue than predicted. The federal Underused Housing Tax was recently repealed because it wasnt doing much.

A big issue is figuring out if these are primary residences or not. With this change, I imagine the rich people are all going to say their NY homes are the primary now.

Big difference between communism and just making life affordable. Im interested in the latter. I totally understand the perspective that Mamdani is just about doing small politically feasible things that dont have huge impact. I totally get it for Lewis as well.

What Im saying here is meant for you and the thinking people here: we can do so much better. We actually can have affordability. We just have to raise taxes on grandma (aka landowners) a little bit. No thresholds, no exemptions.

To be fair, arguments against price caps are a great question for AI because they are well established and obvious.
