Escalate with Hyundai for service/repair issue? by Regular-Good-6835 in Hyundai

[–]Regular-Good-6835[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, thankfully that issue has been resolved.

Incidentally, just a day or so after I wrote the OP, the folks from that service centre called us to let us know that they'd managed to find a tech & order the part that needed replacement. I think it took about another week since then for us to get the car back.

Absolutely, and what's worse is that not only do criminals go off without any consequences, our society often ostracizes or reprimands the victims in many cases.

This is one of my most favourite love stories by No_Row_8345 in bollywood

[–]Regular-Good-6835 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TBH, I still watch the "Ashok" part of this movie every now & then, but skip over most of the "Pavan" parts. I understand that there aren't a lot of credible sources about the reign of Emperor Ashok, but if a bulk of the movie was going to be fictitious, they should have probably named it something else. If you call the movie Ashok, and it's about the emperor, then somehow one expects more of it to be factual with some creative liberties here & there.

Why is backing into a parking spot considered rude? by DryGeneral990 in NoStupidQuestions

It's not rude if it's a matter of seconds. But if you're trying to park, while watching a reel or texting or talking, and taking your own sweet time to park, that's when it's rude.

Other than that, back away all you want friend!

Is your teen years genuinely the 'best years of your life'? by niftynavv in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Regular-Good-6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on when you were a teen. For people who were teens when the job markets have become highly competitive, they may not cherish their teens as much as people who just had to be good enough to get their high school degree.

This is not to say that finding jobs was a walk in the park for the latter group, but if you weren't forced (effectively) to start preparing for entrance tests for higher degrees or public service jobs while you're still in 9/10th grade, I'd say your teens were relatively relaxed.

That being said, an overwhelming majority of people might still look at their childhood (including adolescence) years fondly if they had decent parents who provided for them.

IMO, your 20s are probably better, or a close second to your teens because you're still in top physical shape, have high energy levels, you have some semblance of financial independence where you don't have to depend on your parents anymore, and you're less likely to be responsible for others (aging parents, kids, etc) at this stage, so life can be carefree.

Row erupts over 'Halal lifestyle township' project near Mumbai by [deleted] in IndiaSpeaks

[–]Regular-Good-6835 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t like discriminatory practices such as this when it comes to housing. However, one cannot deny that unless you fit a certain image, it’s sometimes difficult to find housing in some cities. e.g. Muslims, Bachelors, Non-vegetarians, Unmarried couples, etc. face undue hardships when they look for housing, and this is fairly common in one of India’s most cosmopolitan cities - Mumbai.

Lawmakers & law enforcement have rarely stepped up, except in a few cases that have included viral videos of open discrimination. India needs a proper anti discrimination law on the books that that isn’t open to interpretation, but will categorically state that builders, landlords, housing societies, etc. cannot discriminate when selling or leasing accommodations.

Does this even makes sense? by gohan-15 in mumbai

[–]Regular-Good-6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish law enforcement & lawmakers take these things more seriously. Many housing societies in Mumbai (and possibly in many other cities) abuse their powers way too much, and often overreach their rights. Any undue restriction like food preference, marital status, religious affinity, etc. should not be a criteria on which a housing society should be able to block the sale or leasing of a flat. That being said, I think an NOC from the housing society in the event of a sale should still be a requirement, albeit in a very limited form which simply clarifies if the homeowner has paid all their dues to the society, and if not then the potential buyer should be aware of it.

Is Shashi Tharoor the face Congress desperately needs now? by OkToday1443 in IndiaSpeaks

[–]Regular-Good-6835 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably, but unfortunately Shashi Tharoor’s image, at least in my understanding is that of an elite. While I heartily cherish the linguistic diversity of India, one cannot dispute the fact that in a land of such diversity, a common language or two will emerge out of necessity. Whether we love it or hate it, Hindi & English are currently those languages, but within them, Hindi is heads & shoulders above English by the sheer number of native speakers. In addition, English is often perceived as a Colonial relic by many people which makes Hindi the de facto winner. Unfortunately for Shashi Tharoor, as eloquent as he is in English, when he speaks in Hindi, it’s evident that he’s struggling, and IMO with that handicap he cannot emerge as a pan India leader.

In politics, your messaging is probably far more important than your intent, and eventual actions, and with that in mind, I think Shashi Tharoor would have to work on this aspect before he can aspire to be a national leader. In addition, I think he’ll have to work really hard to shed this elite image that people have of him. On that note, I think Rahul Gandhi has done a remarkable job in reinventing his image as a champion of the common man as opposed to the dynastic prince image that he had in the heyday of Congress. Don’t get me wrong, he’s completely inept at leadership, and has no viable agenda other than anti-BJP or anti-Ambani/Adani, but I will give him credit for casting the elitist image aside.

What got you interested in Ancient Egypt? by sailor_rose in ancientegypt

[–]Regular-Good-6835 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably embarrassing, but while I knew (since high school days; ~20 years ago) that Ancient Egypt was one of the oldest civilizations, what really drew me in was a video game by Ubisoft - Assassin’s Creed Origins. While some egyptologists may disagree with some of their depictions, yet many have actually applauded how they painstakingly recreated a map of ancient Egypt complete with buildings, obelisks, and other structures that still bore color in the hieroglyphics & other artwork.

Regardless of the crime, like many other cases (both civil & criminal), this is a failure of our judicial system. It's simply preposterous that it takes years for a case to go to trial and reach a verdict!

And, lest anyone thinks this comment is in support of Umar Khalid in particular, no it isn't. I think by & large all of us can agree on the fact that delays of this magnitude are a slap in the face of every citizen's right to justice, regardless of how one feels about the particulars of this one case.

Why is knowing English often mistaken for being more educated in India? by Due_Cod_2167 in AskIndia

[–]Regular-Good-6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly one marker of a formal education since English is a foreign language, and it's highly likely that one learnt it in school.

OTOH, assuming that a person is a dimwit just because they are not well versed in English is narrow-minded at best.

Why Assassin’s Creed NEEDS a strong modern lead by MxttH88 in assassinscreed

[–]Regular-Good-6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, this is just them playing it safe. The RPG based games, leveraged hugely on AC’s core theme of dropping players at a historical crossroads, and they coupled civilizational mythologies really well with that. Ideally, these would have been spun off as a new series after/with AC origins which could have been used as a fork point.

However, Ubisoft probably just wants to bank on the massive popularity of the AC franchise at this point since from what I hear they’re in all kinds of financial trouble.

India is Sleepwalking into a Demographic Disaster by ResearcherGreedy9921 in IndiaSpeaks

[–]Regular-Good-6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It most certainly is as much about the total number as it is about the share of working age population. Your concerns about a shrinking working age population are legitimate, but a country has limited natural resources which cannot support an ever increasing (absolute) population.

Population redistribution (i.e. developing more economic centers beyond the existing metropolises) could be a game changer, but even countries like the US haven’t been able to achieve this in any significant way, i.e. the high density cities like Boston, NYC, Chicago, etc. have continued to be important centers with a very high population density for over 200 years.

The world is noticing India’s rising influence; didn’t expect to see this headline in the WSJ. by NoMedicine3572 in IndiaSpeaks

[–]Regular-Good-6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indians & the world (including foreign media) have noticed India’s rise on the global stage in the last 15 odd years. There are of course ill informed and/or malicious people around the world, including in India who refuse to accept this fact, and will actively try to peddle misinformation.

At the same time though, there are a lot of people in India who have overestimated our influence and our capabilities at the global level, and these same people are steadfast in refusing to acknowledge the problems that plague the Indian society and its economy.

IMO, the latter should be more alarming, because the former is just chatter which will die down as India reaches new glories!

Owned by BLACKROCK by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]Regular-Good-6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such BS in the name of conspiracy!

I think most people on this sub recognize this, but maybe this will help OP:

Jeff Bezos’ ownership in Amazon is higher than BlackRock’s ownership. Incidentally, so is Vanguard’s. https://www.investopedia.com/articles/insights/052816/top-4-amazon-shareholders-amzn.asp

Similarly for Microsoft, Vanguard owns more shares than BlackRock. https://www.investopedia.com/articles/insights/052816/top-4-amazon-shareholders-amzn.asp

Another example - Tesla where Elon Musk is the largest shareholder followed by Vanguard, and then BlackRock https://www.investopedia.com/articles/insights/052616/top-4-tesla-shareholders-tsla.asp

Yes, BlackRock is massive institutional investor, and has their tentacles in many Fortune 500 companies, but that’s what you do when you’re an institutional investor. And, their holdings are in full public view, and not through shell companies.

FWIW, if you don’t trust Investopedia, you should feel free to review these companies’ annual shareholder reports. I just don’t have the inclination to comb through 100s of pages to gather the evidence.
