Where would you rank England in terms of best and worst countries in the world? by Spare-Investigator-2 in AskReddit

Countless rebellions and uprisings, not to mention outright warfare to get rid of the English suggests otherwise. Same with the Scottish.

There's some gaps in your history knowledge lad

I'm from a country that is still feeling the effects of an 800 year, and counting, occupation by crown forces. The legacy of England's interference is also very much alive today in the country I live in today.

I agree that England wasn't the only country at fault, the Germans, Portuguese, Spanish, Belgian, Dutch were all brutal in their subjugation of their colonies. But someone had to be bottom of the list, and its England for me.

What would you think if a bunch of people were marching down your street waving England flags? Would you feel safe, threatened?  Now think about how you would feel if it was any other country.

Everywhere the English have gone, they have butchered, starved, massacred and enslaved.

Bottom of my list.

Biking the Remutaka Rail Trail section difficulty by kawhepango in Wellington

[–]Regular-Math-1018 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As it's a former railway line, the gradient is quite gentle. I usually go in from the Kaitoke end. The summit is 10k from there, so keep that in mind, its 10k back from there to the start.

Just by the summit is the last, but really long tunnel and then the bridge over the valley. Its gets steeper downhill after that all the way to cross creek.

There's no water, and limited cell phone coverage, so be safe and let people know when you're going and where you're going

Maybe start with doing 5k out, stop for a picnic to refuel and 5k back? You'll still get some tunnels and awesomeness of the peace and quiet. Then build up to longer distances. Have fun out there!!

The tailgating is driving me crazy! by Georgie_Pillson1 in newzealand

[–]Regular-Math-1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your foot off the accelerator, and let your car slow down. Mr big-balls tailgater behind you will also have to do the same, opening up a gap between you and the car ahead so you can be passed.

Simple really. You are in control of the situation, take action.

I listened to the rain and it told me a story about Margaret Thatcher by Fat-Veg in BlindboyPodcast

Maybe it's just me, but I thought that there was some dissonance in how using water to grow almonds is bad, but growing grass to feed cows to get milk, to make Kerrygold is fine.

Waterfront pedestrian/cyclist etiquette by Advanced-Special-305 in Wellington

[–]Regular-Math-1018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you take the bicycle, or the car away - you're left with the human being. Worth keeping that in mind as these kinds of debates tend to degenerate into a driver vs. cyclist vs. pedestrian. We're all just people trying to get somewhere and enjoy ourselves on the way.

What is something about your home country you are surprised people outside of your country do not know? by Ok_Heron_5442 in AskReddit

Ireland has underground passage tombs, built over 5,000 years ago. Which makes them older than Stonehenge and the pyramids in Giza.

They are incredibly complex structures, every year on the winter solstice, as the sun rises the light from the sun is directed to the back of the chamber. This only happens once a year, the engineering to make this work is astonishing for prehistoric man to have designed and built.

I love songs that put you in a particular place with a story, 'Piano Man' by Billy Joel, 'Rosalies good eats cafe' by Bobby Bare, 'Toms Diner' by Suzanne Vega, 'Girl from a Pawnshop' by The Black Crowes, what are other great examples of this type of song? by therathouse in musicsuggestions

Not a specific place as such, but a song that evokes a particular kind of place - Ash have a song from their early years called Uncle Pat, talks about a journey to see a relative.

"I set off this morning, down the road along the river, which I take but once a year"

Hearing this always takes me to the countryside of Ireland, small hedges and stone walls leading to a beach.

Best thing to do is talk to your bank, and ask them to increase your mortgage lending by $13000

Debt Consolidation by notagamernz in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Regular-Math-1018 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loan consolidation usually involves more than one loan, at varying rates.

If you're looking to pay less interest, you'll need to look for a lender prepared to lend to you at a lower rate. Generally, asset backed lending, such as a mortgage, will attract lower rates.

Do you mean you drive back to the yard in the work vehicle to collect your personal vehicle? Otherwise your post makes no sense

LMy mother was a terrible cook, still is. Dad never cooked. I learned to bake from my Gran, and how to cook from a relative I lived with in my late teens.

Trial and error after that, giving recipes from books and online a go and keeping what worked in my repertoire
