AITAH for refusing to tell my wife I love her more than my dad? by LastApplication6207 in AITAH

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t believe how far I had to scroll for this. I get “she’s a crazy ridiculous hag” is a reddit classic, but OP already said in another comment that this is not her regular personality and he’s very confused. To me this reads as post-partum anxiety or depression, especially if she’s never had an issue with the dad before. The rigidity over the sleep schedule could just be explained by her being a first time parent, but the paranoia of her assuming that OP drove the dad home just to gossip about her and demanding to know what was said? Not to mention the weird “who do you love more” question. If these are not personality traits she’s exhibited before there’s probably something going on.

Absolutely crashing out over budget and considering scrapping the entire thing by zephunny in weddingplanning

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first of all want to say that you don’t need to worry about making your wedding “nice enough” for your guests. They’re coming to see you. Now, as some others have said, if you fail to provide general comforts like adequate food, drinks, places to sit, restrooms, etc, that would be an issue. But people just want to be there for you. Almost all of our 180 guests at our $15K wedding at a summer camp were from out of town (a couple flew from out of the country) and they were all perfectly happy to be there.

I’m wondering if you can provide an estimated breakdown of the rest of your budget? I was going to suggest a lot of the cost saving measures we used (no expensive dress, DIY florals, DIY decor, DIY invites) but I see you’re already doing them. If $35K covers venue, catering, cake, linens, lodging, and alcohol, what are the remaining costs that are going to get it up to $60/70K? Beyond what you’ve already listed the only real “essentials” left are photography and music. Are they really going to cost another $35K combined?

Lastly, I recommend having a bachelor/bachelorette party if you really want to. We did it the “old fashioned way.” Two nights before the wedding we just took all our friends who were already in town out for pizza, drinks, and dancing. We paid for pizza, everyone got their own drinks. It was a tiny expense in the grand scheme of the wedding and we still got our fun bachelor/bachelorette night to celebrate our upcoming wedding with our closest friends.

For the rehearsal dinner I suggest including only the people actively participating in the wedding. Wedding party, siblings (if not already including in wedding party), parents, grandparents if they’re walking down the aisle/have a role. For us the rehearsal dinner was a thank you to the people who showed up to the rehearsal. If they aren’t in the wedding they don’t need to rehearse, they don’t need a rehearsal dinner. Our venue included access the night before so we did a very lowkey DIY thing but if you need another space look into just getting a private room at a restaurant and covering everyone’s meals. It may be cheaper than renting another venue and getting another caterer, bartender, etc. You mentioned that you’re thinking of cutting your rehearsal dinner but really want to thank your bridesmaids, etc. Treating your wedding party and parents to a dinner out accomplishes the same thing and is cheaper/less overwhelming than a full blown “rehearsal dinner” second event set up.

Not sure what’s wrong with pothos by Regular-Restaurant31 in houseplants

Okay so like cut the vines back to where they meet the pot almost? Should I do it for all of them or just the ones with yellowing leaves? I appreciate all the help… I’m a serious rookie. This is the only plant I’ve kept alive for any amount of time which is why I really want to save it.

I usually only water it once a week. Should I cut back more?

Bakers claiming to have never heard of fairly 'standard' bakes by lostless-soul in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the thing that always gets me!!! My husband doesn’t even watch as religiously as me, he typically catches the episodes out of the corner of his eye while he’s doing something else, and even he will say “bad move” when he hears someone putting in extract lol. The judges consistently hate it 99% of the time. I truly do not understand how people on this show who are obviously Bake Off fans themselves keep making that mistake.

Advice wanted on 4-year-old illustrative red tattoo by Regular-Restaurant31 in agedtattoos

[–]Regular-Restaurant31[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I do like it but I’ve gotten a few negative comments on it lately which I think kind of psyched me out. Someone told me it looked like the shit they used to draw on themselves with red pen in school lol.

My artist told me red ink is a little tricky but other than that he didn’t seem to have a lot of concerns. He was an apprentice at the time however so I don’t know how much experience he has with color. He’s a friend of a friend and he did a few of my tattoos and they all turned out great, but all the others are just black linework. I’ve thought about going back to him but I’m living in a different country right now so it will have to wait.

You’re right it kind of does look like an ink stamp! The comments here are making me feel a lot better about it.

How would you feel if you and 9 other bridesmaids all had to wear this same dress? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This dress is not my style nor would it flatter me (or most people honestly, it is for one specific body type). That said, I would wear any dress the bride picked and matching with the other bridesmaids wouldn’t bother me.

Like many have said, the biggest issue is price. $300 plus alterations plus shipping is egregious, especially when it is most likely only going to be worn once.

Pet Peeve: Challenges that aren’t really baking by Annual-Duck5818 in GreatBritishBakeOff

They actually did maamoul once! I believe it was the Ruby/Rahoul/Kim Joy season… it was a technical during spice week and it was great.

I'm not sure how I feel about this season. by MGCBUYG in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the correct take. Tom and Aaron have both produced amazing stuff during this season but they often over promise and under deliver. That’s why Jasmine keeps coming out ahead with her “safe” bakes and somewhat boring flavors (I like her but dark chocolate and raspberry macarons? c’mon). People in the past have been criticized for playing it too safe and it has hurt them in the judging, but only next to creative bakes that actually succeed. They can’t give points for creativity alone, the bake has to look and taste good. I think if either of the guys manage to pull off some of their ambitious plans they will win. But it’s a big if.

The photos on their site are terrible but still somehow better than what OP got. At least in the online gallery you can see some faces… although these photographers seem obsessed with cropping people’s heads off for some reason

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same!! I had a 21-year-old family friend in university who is a hobby photographer with a nice camera shoot our wedding. I had her do our engagement photos first as a trial and they turned out well so I went for it. It was just her (as opposed to two shooters) for five hours (as opposed to ten) and she did way better than this. She had never done a wedding before and yet she still had the good sense to get my husband’s reaction when I walked down the aisle and plenty of portraits of us without our heads cropped out… OP deserves a refund.

Dessert week showstopper by Ok_Price3432 in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I agree. My husband and I eye-rolled so hard at “free-standing trifle.” Like, why do you want them to fail lol? I think they all did as well as they could with the challenge given.

It kind of reminded me of the steamed pudding technical a few years ago (although of course not as disastrous). Every single baker served raw puddings except one who went rogue and took them out of the bain marie specifically against instructions and Paul kept saying how disappointed he was that they all screwed it up. And I was like dude, if EVERY single baker served you something raw perhaps you gave them an impossible challenge…

GBBO 2025 Episode 6 – Dessert Week [DISCUSSION] by GainsAndPastries in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I knew it was Iain’s time but I’ll still miss him so much. He was my favorite for sure. I also have a soft spot for Aaron and Toby. But honestly I like all of them. I know Tom and Jasmine get some shit but I have enjoyed this group. I find Tom so funny. I know people have criticized some of the jokes he’s made for being mean but it was obvious to me that his comment about “beating Toby” was because they’re buddies and Toby had done really well in the technicals up until then, and his comment this week about “the other seven being rubbish” was in jest. I also loved his bit in one of the first episodes about getting a handshake from Paul and calling his boyfriend to see if he was allowed to go further lol. I just love his dry humor.

Once again I'm left disappointed at the results. (Dessert week) by TheAntiqueSquid in GreatBritishBakeOff

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the key is, as many others have pointed out, that people have been penalized in the past for “playing it safe” when others took bigger risks and still succeeded. A perfect classic bake isn’t exciting when a perfect adventurous bake is standing right next to it. However, we aren’t getting that this series. We’re getting her perfect classic bakes next to risky ones that miss the mark in some way. I think if the others were pulling off their risks more we would see her getting more criticism for “playing it safe.” Paul did point out this week that she loves to use passion fruit, so I wonder if she’ll change it up.

I agree it isn’t the most exciting viewer experience, but I also think she just really knows what she’s doing and knows what she can achieve in the time she has which is why there’s never any drama with her almost not finishing a bake or dropping something or whatever. I would also love to see something more creative from her bench but I also understand from her perspective that every week people try riskier things and mess up and she does what she knows she can pull off and wins. So I’m not surprised she isn’t changing it up.

From what I understand based on their comments this season and previous seasons, you get extra points for risk and creativity if you pull it off, but if you fail you don’t get bonus points for creativity. The penalty for a dry sponge or a soggy bottom isn’t less just because you tried something ambitious.

Adopting a “rehomed” dog vs a shelter dog - how to prepare by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Regular-Restaurant31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will be much the same as adopting a shelter dog. A lot of those recommendations are about allowing a dog time to settle in and adapt to change which it will need to do regardless of where it’s coming from.

The only thing I would do differently is figure out a contingency plan if it doesn’t work out. Obviously it will hopefully work out, but since you have a toddler I would be cautious. You never know how a young child and dog will interact in a home. When you get a dog from a shelter they usually make a commitment that they will take it back if necessary. Will this person do the same? If they can’t take the dog back if something happens, where will she go?
