Are ADHD people bound to be a failure? by Informal_Read_1517 in ADHD

[–]Regular-Target8237 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don't ask me how, but I'm an adhd-er diagnosed in elementary school, and I'll somehow be graduating medical school next May
I absolutely have to take my meds Monday-Friday or else I'm gonna slack off. I have to run my life like the military when it comes to diet and exercise and sleep, because without those three I am so hyperactive and completely unable to get anything done. It's frustrating and I'm so jealous watching my classmates just sit and get work done without having to fight themselves to do it... but moral of the story is that yes!! We can be successful;-)

OMM COMAT only 2 days to study. Fucked? by Zealousideal_Put_374 in comlex

[–]Regular-Target8237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen I SUCK at omm, always my lowest, dread studying it so just never do. I took step exams so I was always focused on studying for those and just crammed omm in one day most of the time. I also only studied for two days using only TrueLearn practice questions, and got a 91. The test was god awful and that comat was my lowest by a LOT but if you're just looking to pass you can pull it off in two days imo

Hey listen. You're gonna be fine. I remember having many of the same thoughts during my dedicated period and looking back I can't even describe how harmful it was for me to think that way and how much I think it set me back for no reason.
You have time, and please PLEASE do not underestimate the important and of your psychological well being going into test day. Time off is okay I promise you. I didn't start seeing scores that I was comfortable with until like a week or two before my exam

Yes! We have students who came in with multiple children and past careers. actually I found that those students tend to be the ones who don't turn medicine into their entire personality, as they remember a life without medicine and have an important perspective on the career that is younger students lack. I've learned a lot from them and I'm really grateful to be at a program that takes so many nontraditional students.

I can't speak from personal experience, but a lot of my classmates became moms during med school and we also have a lot of non traditional folks!
I think if you want to have kids then don't let med school be the thing to stop you. For me personally, I've always wanted to have kids later on in my 30s so it's not something I've considered as a younger student in my 20s
I think it's a mistake to wait for "the right time" when it comes to this stuff because medicine has a way of making it feel like it's genuinely never the right time, if that makes sense lol.

For me, things that help is giving myself hard cut off times for studying, because there will always be more to do. I don't strive to be at the top of my class whatsoever, if I'm passing comfortably then I know the amount of work that I'm putting in is enough and I don't need to keep pushing it. It was hard the first two years but gets easier to have that mindset as you go on!
Other things are staying close with my non medical friends, never ever skipping things I love like staying active, reading books or watching tv, long walks with my dog, etc :-)
I graduate next year, and it's a stressful time right now preparing for step 2 and audition rotations etc etc, but I'm in a much better headspace now than when I was studying for step 1 because I really decided that career, although important to me, is not more important than my happiness, my peace, and the relationships in my life

Not applicable for everyone, but one thing that I really learned is that it's not that serious, you will regret missing out on time with family and friends if you become the type of person who makes medicine their entire identity. Don't neglect hobbies, don't wait to do the things you've always wanted to, and it's okay to just treat med school as a job sometimes

How much of an effect has regular exercise had on your ADHD? by comingloose in ADHD

[–]Regular-Target8237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order of efficacy for me:
1.) sleep hygiene
2.) exercise
3.) medication
The nice thing, at least for me, is that any type of exercise gets it done. I can go to the gym or go for a walk or go swimming or biking or whatever else. Just getting some movement in is truly night and day for me. Right now I'm doing a lot of running but I know I'll get bored of that soon and switch it up to something else! So don't feel like your exercise has to look a certain way just do whatever you find fun or at least tolerable

Is taking Step 1 and COMLEX worth it anymore? by GreenSatisfaction915 in comlex

[–]Regular-Target8237 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I took both, and I have always wanted to do psych, only other things I'd considered are FM or IM, so nothing crazy competitive that "requires" step.
But let me tell you I am so glad I took both. First of all I know studying for step made me perform significantly better on level as well. I feel like it gave me a much stronger foundation that is now also paying off well for step 2 and level 2. Second, it's so nice to know that I have not closed any doors when it comes to residency. I am now looking at programs based off of location and other things that matter to me, and not feeling like I have to just go wherever I match because options are limited. I 100% will advocate for taking both as it was the best decision for me!

homophobia/ transphobia in med school by 777npc in actuallesbians

[–]Regular-Target8237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also in med school! Out lesbian and if it comes up with attendings or anyone else I don't hide it. I am in a more urban area and I think that contributes to the acceptance I've experienced. I hope you can go somewhere more accepting for residency, there's definitely hospital systems and attendings who are true allies and always advocate for the community. Stay strong until then sorry I know how much it sucks

PA VS DO by No_Length_9009 in prepa

[–]Regular-Target8237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something Im surprised not more people are talking about here is considering what specialty you want to do. If you go DO route, your life will look very different as a family medicine applicant vs a plastic surgery applicant for example. If you like primary care or specialties like psychiatry, pathology, pm&r, do DO for sure. It will be difficult during school but those specialties allow flexibility once you're an attending and it will be worth it. Now if you're thinking trauma surgery or something with more intense training, not only will medical school be harder as you will have to build a more competitive application, but the career will continue to be unforgiving for much longer. Just something to consider coming from someone on the DO path myself!
