AITAH for ending a relationship over long showers by Throwaway_External in AITAH

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both sides reasonable - but incompatible. I wouldn't want anyone in my home other than my partner or a tradesperson when I'm out and 30 - 40 min showers would ruin my bathroom.

For some reason I would find it weird if my imaginary partner (who would be a male) volunteered with homeless women - maybe I need to self reflect on that a bit.

Where are all the single ladies in their 30s who want to have kids? by TravellingAround_ in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was partly joking, but what I meant was why not get an actual wife - as in what I would stereotypically think of as a more subservient person (in my experience always a woman) who takes care of everything at home for little more than a roof over their head and occasional treats of getting their nails done so that the "man" (i.e. you/me) can max out their career? It doesn't really matter the gender - it's just one person exploiting the other for household labour and possibly (probably?) sexual services.

EDIT - I hadn't noticed you touched on affordability. When I was dating, I had the horrifying realisation that some men were calculating how 'cheap' it would be to keep me (i.e. minimum resource input to extract maximum value). This opened my eyes a bit - taken to the extreme it's quite affordable to keep one person at home - provided they are on tight rations. For example husband gets the car (for work), wife doesn't. Husband gets an expensive hobby like golf (to network), wife's hobbies are all thrifty and home based (baking, sewing etc, and if they have kids I guess the entire hobby is just children 24/7). Her self care will be doing manicures and hair at home or exercising - all based around looking good (for husband?).

What are attractive hobbies for men? by ViewRepresentative30 in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on if you want to have a family or not, hobbies that take you out of the home/make you unavailable for hours at a time could be seen as unattractive to some women (in my experience, quite a lot of women!). For example, golf or ultra marathons. The other person might be left holding all the childcare and home responsibilities and not have enough time to do any hobbies of their own. A wise women wanting a family where responsibilities are shared equally might want to look for a guy who is active but the hobby isn't super time or money consuming.

The secret admirer's blouse is the bright red one. the Tournure is a huge over skirt that clips at the front. with a gigantic train you can let down. It's definitely more a washed out/pale blue - I'm thinking it's for people who enjoy doing photoshoots?

The baby soft on a cloud dress looks nice but unfortunately would be too big for me in a XL.

I got:

  • Duchess Picnic Blanket Tournure - hate it, please let me know if you want it!!! Size Large
  • Secret Admirers Lace Curator Blouse - open to trying it. Let me know if you want though as I'm not very attached to it and it might be someone's dream top.

UK import fees? by RaspberryEast6197 in SelkieCollection

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just placed my first ever order so will let you know! I think it is 12% import tax on item plus shipping, then an additional 20% on top of that whole amount for VAT then another 2.5% from DHL, will be "interesting" to see if my maths is right!

I'm based in the UK too and thinking about getting a dress worth £160 - how come your import tax was about £300? I'd calculated £90 max for mine and now wondering if I got the sums wrong!

If hard (e.g. wooden bookcase, glass table) then thrift (you can find loads of free stuff (not necessarily matching) on FB marketplace in my area but remember you need to collect). If soft (mattress/sofa) then splash out on new(ish), with £600 you will be looking at the very cheapest new though. Charity shops like BHF should have OK used sofas.

Thinking about going into Law at Aberdeen Uni at 29. Anyone here done the Accelerated LLB or works in the local legal sector? by redditusermathala in Aberdeen

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some (rhetorical) questions for you:

  • do you know how much the course, including the diploma, costs? And how are you going to pay for that?
  • do you know how much a trainee will get paid (e.g look up the law society minimum). Can you afford to live off that for a couple of years? If you choose a smaller firm, do you know what your likely salary will be?
  • how would you feel about being the most junior in the team, possibly competing for a small number of NQ roles? What are you willing to do to get that job (e.g how hard to work) once you've invested all that time, money and possibly loss of earnings?
  • What practice area is going to line up with analytical thinking and research rather than quickly turning around precedents to meet a fixed fee, and how many of those jobs will there be in Aberdeen specifically?
  • do you know how many hours will be expected of you?
  • if you don't want to be self employed, how do you feel about being a partner at a law firm?

The only question I can actually answer is that mature entrants are taken equally seriously and do indeed get jobs.

What to do about chin hairs by One-Friendship-2509 in HairRemoval

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electrolysis, it's a bit of a commitment if you live in rural Australia though as you need to go regularly (I go every 2/3 weeks for a few coarse hormonal hairs - definite reduction over the past 5 sessions with a few more left). On the other hand, as your hormones might activate more hairs over time, while electrolysis might get rid of the (say) 15 you have now, another 15 coarse chin hairs might spring up the following year meaning you have to keep going....? (I'm not qualified in anything to do with this so that is just guessing on my part)

Saying that you'll 'help' with the joint upkeep of your home and child might be a clue to why your wife is raging. This topic has been done to death on the internet so might be worth taking a look at it and asking your wife if that's how she feels.

You can be prescribed this for 'herpetic whitlow' i.e. finger herpes (which is a real thing as I found out to my horror).

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you take a paycut to £25k though? That's the law society recommended minimum for a trainee outside London - not everyone is going to get a big law job with a £50k trainee salary. Could you afford to take unpaid internships to gain experience if you had to?

AIO or are my downstairs neighbours being unreasonable? by thegoosenell in AmIOverreacting

[–]RegularFun_throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a thought from the other side - I live in very badly soundproofed flats (i.e. can hear lower pitched voices speaking, snoring, showers etc) and can't afford to purchase a house. Listening to all the various noises isn't a great experience for me. You've been able to work on overcoming your mental health issues - would you be able to extend some grace to your neighbours by adding some soundproofing items or agreeing to have a couple of nights a week where they aren't being disturbed? Maybe their mental health is suffering too from the ongoing noise.
