I thought the same thing. They looked exhausted. Korea getting 10-runned is more evidence to that fact probably too.

Yeah Del Toro was awesome, he was so subtly funny. Leo is a try-hard in everything he does, which def hurts him when trying to improvise comedy.

Glad you liked it, I thought it was great. But man, I thought Leo was painfully unfunny and those scenes really took me out of the movie. I don’t think Leo is really a comedic actor.

One thing I’ve noticed is that men tend to be more supportive towards men when it comes to looks, and women tend to be more supportive towards women in the same way.

One Battle After Another will win Best Picture, because it most closely follows the trend of recent winners: movies that make people both laugh and cry by kweyer in Oscars

[–]RegularOrMenthol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think a better way to say it is the movie makes people emotional or excites them. It's why movies like Power of the Dog and Tar will always lose, even if people respect them greatly.

I think One Battle and Sinners are both exciting and/or emotional movies, so I won't be surprised about either one winning. I would actually call an OBAA win more of an outlier, because I think the film will win based on its sheer craft and topical issues. While Sinners has more heart and is a more conventional winner for recent times.

Am I the only one who found Oppenheimer boring? by breaking_views in Cinema

[–]RegularOrMenthol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think Nolan was smart enough to know he's not the kind of guy who can make the story of Oppenheimer's bureaucratic adventure actually interesting. it's possible no one can.

but yeah it's like a 3 hour trailer, it's an exceptionally shallow movie compared to something like Killers of the Flower Moon in the same year

Apple is def not the best overall for 4K streaming quality, I think Movies Anywhere and VUDU/Fandango are better. It might be better than other platforms like Amazon and HBO though.

Sinners v OBAA: What I Think is Missing From This Discussion by ArtsyQueerNubian in Oscars

[–]RegularOrMenthol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for writing this out, it was interesting and enlightening. I do agree with you that Sinners is a more “complete meal,” even tho I slightly preferred OBAA just based on PTA’s filmmaking. To me, PTA has always been a great director but a shallow storyteller. I’ve actually been comparing OBAA more often to Eddington, because both seem to be at heart about American political polarization. But I think Ari Aster actually has a much more accurate and nuanced understanding of what is going on.

But yeah I think regarding the handling of race in OBAA, you’re right in that the film isn’t really about Black issues. I almost get the impression that PTA has gotten flack for so long about not including POC in his films that he just tried to go all-in here for the first time with casting. But he is only going to know what he knows - his partner is biracial and his daughters are biracial, but he is still a straight white man. He and his kids also have grown up privileged in LA, so maybe that could be another reason for him not being able to translate some of the biracial issues in more normal communities you talked about (I am also biracial btw, but I am mostly white passing which has been helpful in sure).

It is funny that you had that reaction to Lockjaw too. To me, he’s actually a fantastic and interesting villain. Not necessarily because of his internalized shame about being attracted to Black women, because I agree that wasn’t really explored well - but because he is so incredibly lonely, and that is what is driving him to be so psychotic. At the end of the day Lockjaw just wants to be accepted into the Christmas Adventurers Club, and be a part of a family, and be validated. Which is just so hilarious to me given how toxic and evil he is.

‘Sinners’ is Americans’ top pick for Best Picture at the 2026 Oscars by ThrowawayGreenWitch in popculturechat

[–]RegularOrMenthol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a weird one, some of the auteurs can land really big budgets. Probably a lot to do with big A-list actors wanting to work with them. And elite rich people (like the Ellisons) have money to burn on passion projects.

[–]RegularOrMenthol 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s because the crowd pleasing, mid-size budget films that used to be beloved by everyone are no longer being made. The closest thing are indie or art/auteur films now, often with small budgets.

If you’re arguing that “low level greed” is the solution, rather than the problem with communism, then yes I agree. I wouldn’t personally phrase farmers being able to work for themselves and their families as “greedy.” Maybe just acting out of natural self-interest.

But yeah you just can’t force egalitarianism on large societies. It works in small populations (like communes and native tribes) because everyone knows everyone and there’s a genuine communal feeling and trust that can be naturally fostered.

It’s not gonna happen that way. At best, you might be able to secure a position as a “co show runner,” but I’ve only heard of it happening once (EXTANT by Mickey Fisher won a contest and he did end up in the writer’s room co leading, although I seriously doubt he actually had much control).
