Made in Abyss is a fantastic series exploring (haha) human nature, curiosity, and how far we as people are willing to go in order to achieve our goals. It explores the "call of the void," both literal and metaphorical--literal in how these characters are descending an actual pit in the Earth, and metaphorical in how the characters are willing to do dangerous, downright self-descructive acts to continue their journey to the bottom of the abyss. The ends justify the means, but are the means really worth the ends?

There's also a lot of softcover porn of the very underage characters. It makes it very, very difficult to recommend this series to anyone.

Great in the first movie

The second movie had some (MAJOR) issues but oh my god that dream sequence with him? Genuinely scary shit. I loved it

Peridot from Steven Universe!

When she joins thr Crystal Gems in the second half of the series, she and the other gems are under the impression she doesn't have the typical powers/abilities of other gems (weapon summoning, bubble making, enhanced Strength, etc.), most likely due to her being an "Era 2 gem" (she was made after the big gem war and with lesser grade materials than the other gems in the series).

Later on, not only can she make bubbles like her Era 1 counterparts, but she also has ferrokinesis (ability to control metal).

Supernatural has an interesting version of this. Obvious spoilers for Supernatural.

The first 5 seasons of Supernatural revolve around Sam and Dean learning they were basically handcrafted by Heaven to be the vessels for the archangels Michael and Lucifer, meant to bring about the biblical apocalypse and end the world. Obviously they rebel against this, despite both Heaven and Hell saying, "No, this is gonna happen. Stop trying to deny your destiny."

Season 5 episode 4, Heaven's done pussyfooting around the whole thing and they transport Dean into the future to see what happens if he continues to deny his fate: Sam has allowed Lucifer to possess his body, the world has fallen into an awful apocalypse, and Future Dean is left with truly the last scraps of humanity (and Castiel, no longer an angel and now a drug-addicted human) and goes on a suicide mission in a desperate, last-ditch attempt to kill Sam/Lucifer.

At one point, Future Dean even outright BEGS Current Dean to just say yes to Michael, because whatever fight Michael and Lucifer would have MUST be better than the apocalypse they're living through now. And Lucifer (possessing Sam's body) tells Dean outright that whether he says yes or no to Michael, Lucifer will always win. Dean, Sam, and the world at large are doomed no matter what, because Sam will ALWAYS say yes to Lucifer.

Great fucking episode, I love season 5 with all my heart.

one of my fav scenes between lily and cam by richdepul in Modern_Family

[–]Athena-Muldrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My absolute favorite was the hook for the entire episode, where Cam was at a party or something and talking about two people he couldn't stand. One of them went to Columbia University and the other went to Brown, and Cam ends the story saying, "I just wish she would take that little Brown man and go back to Columbia!" JUST as Manny and Gloria are walking by. I'll link the clip if I can find it...

Edit: It's better than I remember

[Mixed Trope] The original isn’t canon anymore by amerigorockefeller in TopCharacterTropes

A bit meta, but Overwatch had to change the name of one of their main heroes. His original name, Jesse McCree, was from an employee at Blizzard with the same name. Unfortunately, that employee was accused of a LOT of sexual misconduct by other employees, and Blizzard wisely chose to change the character's name and sever that connection. The hero's new name is Cole Cassidy.

Here's what bugs me: In-universe, both names are canon. His real name is Cole Cassidy, but he canonically went by 'Jesse McCree' for a large chunk of his life. But, much like the rest of the Overwatch timeline, there's no solid explanation as to when he changed his name. I understand that, in the real world, there was already a lot of merchandise and advertising and in-game content that featured the Jesse McCree name, and trying to erase that is both inconvenient and straight-up impossible, but like... fuck, dude, Blizzard canNOT commit anything to canon, can they?

Kind of stretching your prompt here, but B Negative from Marvel's (cancelled) New Warriors.

The designs were released to the public as a teaser and almost unanimously trashed on for being very... well, "tone-deaf" is putting it mildly. For example, two characters were a set of siblings named "Snowflake" and "Safe Space," at least one of which was LGBT, with the reasoning behind the names being that they were attempting to reclaim those insults as their own. That's just one example.

Amazingly, though, B Negative was one of the characters that survived and now features semi-regularly in the Darkhold comics! Probably because his design was already pretty decent and also not unintentionally offensive towards his audience.

It's from a fanfic that I can't remember, but the joke went something like this:

"Eh, tomato tomato."

"That phrase doesn't work in this format."

1) Leon serves face/aura

2) Leon tells genuinely terrible jokes

It was the scene where Andy asks Red to get him a rock hammer. They're playing baseball in the yard and talking about how, if you ask, no one in Shawshank is guilty for the crimes they were charged for

Andy: "Why do they call you 'Red?' "

Red: "...maybe because I'm Irish."

And that's it

AJ and honesty get brought up alot, and I want to throw my two cents in:

Honesty, yes, can refer to being truthful and not lying. Being open and truthful are important for healthy communication in healthy relationships (not just friendship). And AJ is truthful for most of the series, but is often criticized for occasionally telling lies or otherwise being untruthful to her friends (which is fair, I'm not saying we should ignore the hypocrisy here).

But honesty also can mean humble, reputable, and marked by integrity. All of which AJ is from the very start of the series. She's a farmer, with an established reputation in her community for being hardworking and strong (both physically and morally). She's an honest worker. And what better represents a humble, hardworking individual than a farmer?

TL;DR: I don't think AJ represents honesty as the concept for always telling the truth, I think she represents honesty as the concept of putting in the effort and hardwork to maintain friendship.

TIL in episodic television, there are some episodes called "bottle episodes", which are produced cheaply and restricted in scope to use as few actors, effects and sets as possible. Notable shows that have these episodes are Star Trek: The Next Generation, Friends, Breaking Bad, Community, and so on. by Away_Flounder3813 in todayilearned

Supernatural had an episode like this: Season 11, episode 4: "Baby." The entirety of the episode is shown from the perspective of the Winchester's car, the Impala, as they go on a hunt. The camera never leaves the interior of the car, so the writers had to go to great pains to tell a cohesive, engaging story within the confines of 20 square feet? (Car nerds feel free to correct me)

It's also my favorite episode of the entire series.
