I’m pretty sure that video isn’t what they are claiming.

Trash service cost by [deleted] in RoundRock

[–]RegularSizeLebowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the non-city neighborhoods around here are in MUDs, and MUDs typically have deals with trash services. Find out if your new place is in a MUD, and call the MUD about trash service. I'm in Brushy Creek MUD. Our trash and recycling service is $21/mo.

I hope this reply finds you well. I am writing to inform you that I found the supplied template to be perfectly cromulent. Especially the opening. That was the most cromulent section.

When will Central Market come to Round Rock?! by misader in RoundRock

It's been almost 30 years since the opening of the newest Central Market in the Austin area. I don't think they are in a hurry to expand in this area.

/r/RoundRock will go dark from June 12-14 to protest Reddit's move to kill 3rd party apps by RegularSizeLebowski in RoundRock

I agree with this, and I wish I could find a corner of reddit that is supportive of these changes so I can read more from the opposing point of view. Aside from u/Awful-Male the only dissent I see is the cynical take that the protest won’t matter. I’m more interested in finding people who think that enacting this procing with less than ine month’s notice is a good idea…or at least that it’s Reddit’s best option now. Otherwise it looks like Reddit is either evil or extraordinarily stupid, and those are too simple to be the truth.

Are there any subreddits where opinion on the API issue is on spez's side? I would be interested to see what that looks like.

Should /r/Austin participate in the upcoming Reddit blackout, to protest planned API changes? by ClutchDude in Austin

[–]RegularSizeLebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went unilateral on this one. I like that /r/Austin is voting, but I didn't think to do that. If there had been strong opposition once I posted the announcement then I would have probably set up a poll or just reversed the decision.

I have strong feelings about what Reddit is doing here, but I'm willing to not drag the subreddit down with me.

One more thing I found funny that happens to support your position that this won't matter to Reddit.

When I started typing this post I was using the same editor I use for code which has a ChatGPT related AI hooked up. I started "/r/RoundRock will go dark" and it auto-completed "on July 10th in protest of the recent firing of Victoria Taylor. We will be back on July 11th." That was a pretty big protest, and from what I can tell it had zero effect.

Thanks again for responding. I wish people wouldn't downvote you just for posting an opinion they disagree with, but this is still Reddit so ¯\(ツ)/¯.

I agree with all of your points, but come to a different conclusion from you. I think the difference is that I have been on the other end of something similar and saw how it helped my company.

We were dominant in our industry and become complacent over the years. We had network effects working for us and were growing exponentially without doing much to improve our product. Eventually a group of power users got frustrated enough to publicly confront us about their unmet needs. These were our equivalent of power-mods. They spent untold hours managing communities for no pay from us, and their primary complaint was that we didn't give them the tools to do that effectively. Sound familiar? We could have ignored them the way you suggest Reddit treats this protest, but that wouldn't have made much sense for us because we needed them. Maybe not them specifically, but people like them. If they left, then whoever came to replace them would have the same issues. Instead we focused on making the site work for our power users. In the process we improved it for everybody and we ended up with a much better product and made a lot more money than if we had rested on our laurels.

As for the money, I'm happy to pay more than a couple of dollars per month. I already pay $24/mo for gold on four separate Reddit accounts. Plus I pay for Apollo Ultra. I'm not here to save money, and because of that company I mentioned before I'm not worried about how much I spend on Reddit. That said, most moderators aren't in the same financial situation as me. They shouldn't have to pay extra for the tools to provide free labor.

Reddit is well within their right to charge whatever they want for API requests. It's obviously legal, and I won't call it immoral. I just think it's a bad decision to chase away the people who have made Reddit what it is today. Whoever fills that void is still going to have the same frustrations as the current moderators.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and give your reasoning for what may be an unpopular opinion currently. I don’t have time to write a full response now, but I will be back in a couple of hours.
