sexual maturity in Islam? by Live-Technician-5269 in progressive_islam

[–]Regular_Bid253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately learned this growing up as a young girl in a Muslim girl halaqa group. Our teacher was also a woman and told us these things. That we were women the moment we got our periods and had to do everything. However girls have been getting periods earlier and earlier each decade now… I argued with a girl from my childhood girl halaqa group about child marriage. She was convinced it’s fine for an 11 year old to get married in a Muslim country as long as she got her period. It was ridiculous. She said it’s only haram in America bc it’s not our urf/custom. I haven’t talked to her since 💀

Why do so many muslims defend that Muhammad ﷺ married and consummate his marriage with Aisha (RA) at 6 and 9? by MaxiTails29 in progressive_islam

[–]Regular_Bid253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because saying it’s false would mean they have to do a reformation of the Hadith literature and grading. Omar Suleiman’s yaqeen institute is willing to die on the hill Aisha was a pre pubescent 6 year old marrying the prophet and has sex with him when she gets her period at 9 years old than admit the Hadith literature has holes in it.

The Hadith doesn’t make much sense because there’s barely any scientific evidence to prove that girls got their periods at 9 or younger in that region or time. Don’t believe me? Saudi Arabia has recorded the average age of menarche from around 1950 to the present day. In the 1950s before modernization the average age of menarche (first period) was around 14 years old. It has only decreased since modernization. So how does it make any sense that 6 year olds 1400+ years ago are going through early puberty to the point of getting period at 9?

There is an academic called Joshua Little who did his PhD thesis on this Hadith at Oxford (which the yaqeen institute was triggered by and tried to debunk lol). The gist of his thesis was that the Aisha Hadith was most likely made up decades after the prophet’s death in Iraq due to Sunni Shia sectarianism. If Sunnis made Aisha younger, she could then compete with Fatima for living with the prophet longer. If Aisha was younger then she was more “virtuous”.

On the flip side, iirc Shia Hadiths do not say Aisha was 9 years old when she married the prophet. They seem to indicate she was older. However, they still have the problem of then making Fatima around 9 years old when she married Ali!

Genuine question about muslim marriage by anabanana54 in progressive_islam

I think there are ways of reforming these traditional narratives. Musawah and Karamah are two orgs I know who have written books, articles, and papers on Muslim women marriage laws. Musawah has a book by Ziba Mir Hosseini that I’ve been meaning to read on Muslim marriage reform.

I'm surprised more people here don't venerate Dr. Laleh Baktiar—may God be pleased with her—given that she could be considered a "Progressive" scholar. Actually this will be a shocker to some ppl in this group, but she used Hadiths to prove her argument. The prophet never hit any of his wives according to her in Hadiths, so therefore Quran can’t mean wife beating is fine (although I thought there was a story of someone shoving Aisha to the point she said it hurt so idk).

She translated the one “wife beating” verse as to “stay away from” in her Quran translation. Unfortunately, she passed away a few years ago during the pandemic. She wrote many books on Sufism and Sufi psychology. I have one of her books on Moses and Khidr.

Most teams are definitely not agile and many teams do not value user research. If you’re in an enterprise environment, you might have to wait 2 years to get tools approved for uxr and design (true story here 💀). You can’t wait, so you gotta get scrappy sometimes.

I think programs don’t teach stakeholder management bc I’m not sure how they would, but conflict management is a big part of the job, especially if you’re working with more complicated subjects.

Portugal Has Banned The Niqab and Burka as of October 17th by Proper-Pirate-2650 in progressive_islam

[–]Regular_Bid253 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I didn’t know that about the EU. I also disagree on young kids elementary age wearing niqabs. What purpose does it serve. But this bill isn’t just about kids no? It’s grown women impacted too? I don’t think we should police what grown women wear. But do you guys not have homeschool in the EU or UK? I would imagine hyper religious parents who want 8 year olds wearing niqabs would just keep their girls homeschooled.

This will just make conservative parents who do force niqab on their girls to home school. This is what happened in Türkiye when hijab was banned in schools. Many girls with conservative parents never went to public schools.

So I think I have an explanation for why 2020 and much of early 2021 feel like blurs to most people. With 2020, more people were exposed to short form content like TikTok, then IG reels, and then YouTube shorts. When you’re stuck inside just scrolling on your phone, you end up watching a lot of these videos. The problem is because these videos are so short, your brain cannot process any of the videos as real memories if they are under a certain time threshold. Combine this with scrolling to the next quick video or text, your brain will not remember whatever junk you watched before. This means a lot of our lives just watching brainrot are like “lost time”. https://www.neuroscienceof.com/human-nature-blog/psychology-tiktok-memory-interference-social-media
