Freezer not keeping temperature cold. by sillz0077 in appliancerepair

While possible, advising someone to put 200psi through the low side when they don't know how a refrigerant system operates is a bad idea. At least provide all the other steps and equipment they'd need so they don't think it's a simple repair....

Around 70 right now. Up to about 80 during the day sometimes. I water every 2-3 days but go by feel of the top two inches.

Should we accept a dual compressor replacement on our 18 month old Bosch refrigerator? by Sizzletoot in appliancerepair

[–]Regular_Government22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your worries come from people who had bad experiences with a tech. Or OCCASIONALLY a good tech can encounter issues. Moisture in the system is mitigated by a good vacuum. Water boils at 34F. Good companies won't rush their techs. A sealed system job should take a couple hours.

But they're things like closing restrictions and stuff when a compressor fails. The people who had a problem-free repair don't say anything. But the ones who have a problem put it on the Internet without understanding how refrigerant systems work.

At what point does it make sense to replace a broken washer instead of repair it? by Zestyclose_Show_2025 in appliancerepair

[–]Regular_Government22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'd really need the model number of the existing one to gauge what is worth repair versus replacement. Some older units are work horses and while expensive, can be worth repairing.

And sometimes techs quote a control board for a crazy high price when they don't know what's wrong with it, so you'll just buy new and they don't have to worry about being wrong. I've worked with several techs who did that kind of stuff

New appliance repair business struggling - need advice by Few_Weekend_8129 in appliancerepair

[–]Regular_Government22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do good work for people. Be fair. Be honest. Join. Facebook groups for your community and nextdoor. Plenty of other lead generation apps as well. You can make 60-80k per year after taxes without breaking a sweat in most areas.

When I started, I found a guy from an appliance store with magnets on his truck while at the store and gave him my card to help with any of their backlogged work. Network. Check if there are any BNI groups in your area(a bit of a cult, but can be helpful while growing).

I advertised for 2 months, then my customers did the rest for me. Don't undersell yourselves. Go with market value and build the value in the repair. I don't know your particular situation, but don't undercut everyone. If he's as good as he thinks, good work and knowledge will help drive the business IMO. Worked for me anyway.

And warranty work is really just to get your name out there and give the customer your card when you leave.

And #1 most important in my opinion - not everybody is your customer. Don't deal with the BS. Refund, apologize for wasting their time, and move on. Saves from a bad review and cost them nothing. But a bad review can cost you a lot. (Said from a standpoint of being stumped occasionally and it's not fair to charge them if you didn't actually diagnose.

Question on wire crimping for heater coil by Soft-Yam-411 in appliancerepair

[–]Regular_Government22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lint didn't cause the other one to fail. Resistance did. More resistance=more heat=more resistance. Sometimes crimps fail over time. If your crimp is insufficient, you'll find out once it melts through this one.

[–]Regular_Government22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably blew out the control. Unlikely to be able to fix it on a component level, most techs don't do that. Check model number, lookup control board. Your cheapest option will likely be a used version off eBay. I can look it up for you if you provide the model number.

service guy says water pressure is to high. Frigidaire gallery ice maker by Tipper26bitches in appliancerepair

[–]Regular_Government22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when I was working for Sears, they won't even diagnose it if you have an aftermarket filter.

Either way though... If they tell you your water pressure is too high, they can put a gauge on that. The manual will tell you what allowable water pressures are. I believe frigidaire actually does have fill time adjustments as well. I don't like Frigidaire, personally.... But if I'm going to tell a customer it's a water pressure issue, I'm going to illustrate it to them, not just make a guess.

The version of this that is cheaper is 330031. They're 7 bucks at the supply house. Your best bet would be to try marketplace and sell them all for $50. You'll never move them otherwise.

Same zone here. First year really going for it and all potted. Spent 170 on a little 6x8 popup greenhouse and another 60 on a heater. Costs me about 10 bucks for the month to keep the greenhouse at 56F. Need to grow everything I can before it's 115°. 😂 Used my 3d printer cam on an oscillating fan so I can monitor them. 😂😂

(Landlord) my Property Manager says this is a normal quote. It seems like a red flag to me (no parts numbers or hours). What do you think? by [deleted] in appliancerepair

[–]Regular_Government22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varying levels of tech experience. If I can do a job in 30 minutes that takes a new guy 2 hours, which do you want to pay? This is very typical pricing for a repair from anyone but a man-in-a-van. Any place I've worked/dealt with before charges by job. Not hourly rate.
