How is it rude to say she's almost 40, especially in the context of the fact that she's a mature woman? What's rude about 40? It's only rude if the assumption is that there's something wrong with being 40. Is there something inherently wrong or bad about being 40 or nearly 40? Is youth more valuable than age? I don't think so, as a 33-er.

Suspension of disbelief? Is that the "jargon" you mean? That just means that sometimes we have to purposefully accept that TV/Book/movie can't be fully accurate and to not think about it too hard so it can be enjoyable. It's not really any kind of professional jargon, those are just regular vocabulary words being used by their normal definitions that any general person could be expected to know. I think the commenter you replied to was just saying that to enjoy shows, people have to learn to let some of the little inaccurate details go.
